Jonathan Hernandez RP | LAD
Mariners' Jonathan Hernandez: Scooped up by Seattle
The Mariners claimed Hernandez from waivers Friday.
Hernandez was designated for assignment by the Rangers on Tuesday after Texas acquired southpaw Andrew Chafin in a trade with Detroit. Across 26 major-league outings this season, Hernandez has a 5.05 ERA, 1.59 WHIP and 36:26 K:BB across 41 innings. The 28-year-old right-hander will likely begin his tenure with his new organization with Triple-A Tacoma, but he could make his way back to the majors if the Mariners require his arm out of the bullpen.

Walter Pennington RP | BAL
Rangers' Walter Pennington: Recalled by Texas
The Rangers recalled Pennington from Triple-A Round Rock on Friday.
Pennington was assigned to Round Rock after being acquired by the Rangers on Monday from the Royals in exchange for Michael Lorenzen. Across 39 outings in Triple-A this season, Pennington has a 2.13 ERA with 84 strikeouts across 63.1 innings. His move to the big club corresponds with the Rangers placing right-hander Max Scherzer (shoulder) on the 15-day injured list.

Chris Martin RP | TEX
Red Sox's Chris Martin: Targeting return next week
Martin (elbow) is on pace to return during Boston's upcoming series against the Astros, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
The Red Sox will likely look to get Martin into a few rehab games in the minor leagues, but assuming he doesn't face any setbacks, a return to the bullpen should come in roughly seven days. The 38-year-old reliever put up a 3.42 ERA and 1.03 WHIP through 26.1 innings prior to landing on the IL in early July.

Red Sox's Yohan Ramirez: Outrighted to Triple-A
Ramirez cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Worcester by the Red Sox on Friday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
After being claimed off waivers by the Red Sox on July 28, he was DFA'd by the team Wednesday. In his lone outing with Boston on Tuesday against Seattle, he gave up three runs (two earned) across 1.1 innings. White Sox's Prelander Berroa: Recalled from Triple-A
The White Sox recalled Berroa from Triple-A Charlotte on Friday, James Fegan of SoxMachine.com reports.
Berroa has spent virtually all of the 2024 season with Charlotte, putting up a 6.69 ERA and 45:28 K:BB over 40.1 innings. The hard-throwing righty made one appearance with the White Sox back in April, hitting one batter with a pitch and retiring the other.

Gus Varland RP | WAS
White Sox's Gus Varland: Claimed by South Siders
The White Sox claimed Varland off waivers and optioned him to Triple-A Charlotte on Friday.
The right-hander was designated for assignment by the Dodgers on Tuesday, and the White Sox utilized their No. 1 spot in the waiver order to bolster their relief depth. Varland allowed two earned runs over six innings for Los Angeles but has struggled to a 7.99 ERA in 28 outings at Triple-A this year.

Janson Junk SP | MIA
Astros' Janson Junk: Claimed and optioned
The Astros claimed Junk off waivers from the Brewers on Friday and optioned him to Triple-A Sugar Land, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Junk has allowed six runs in eight innings in the majors this season but holds a 2.55 ERA and 35:15 K:BB across 35.1 frames at the Triple-A level. He's been pitching in relief exclusively since May, but Junk does have extensive starting pitcher experience and it's not clear what role the Astros have planned for him.
