Alvarez went 3-for-5 with an RBI triple and two runs scored during the Astros' 9-7 win over the Yankees on Tuesday.

It was Alvarez's 14th game of at least three hits, and his third knock was an RBI triple to put the Astros up 7-6 in the eighth inning. The 29-year-old slugger is considered by many the favorite to win the American League MVP award, as he leads the AL in all parts of the slash line (.323/.438/.618) as well as home runs (36) and RBI (91) while ranking second in both hits and runs scored.

Manager Dave Roberts didn't rule out the possibility of Ohtani (knee) pitching Sunday against the Tigers, depending how things go the next few days, Maddie Lee of the Los Angeles Times reports.

The skipper indicated Sunday that Ohtani could pitch in a game as early as this week, and it appears the two-way star is in play to close out the three-game series in Detroit. The right-hander threw 30 pitches in a session of live batting practice Saturday and will have one more mound session this week. If that goes well, Ohtani could make his first appearance on the bump for the Dodgers since early July. He would likely have a limited workload early on, which would give Eric Lauer a chance to work in a piggyback role.

The White Sox placed Benintendi on the bereavement/family medical emergency list Tuesday.

By rule, Benintendi will be away from the club for the next 3-to-7 days. The White Sox could mix and match at designated hitter while Benintendi is unavailable.

The Yankees transferred Stanton (calf) to the 60-day injured list Tuesday.

The veteran slugger was working his way back from a right calf strain last week when he suffered a moderate strain of his left calf, further delaying his return from the injured list. This transaction doesn't mean much given that Stanton has already been sidelined well beyond the 60-day minimum. After suffering the setback, manager Aaron Boone indicated it will be "challenging" for the 36-year-old to make it back before the end of the regular season, per Jorge Castillo of ESPN.com.

Pederson was ejected from Monday's game against the White Sox after being denied a challenge, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. He went 0-for-1 with a walk and a run scored before exiting.

Pederson voiced his displeasure with the home plate umpire from the dugout after he was denied an ABS challenge earlier in the game, and he was promptly ejected from the matchup. Justin Foscue was called on to replace Pederson in the DH slot following his departure.

The Giants placed Eldridge (personal) on the bereavement list Monday, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

As expected, the Giants deactivated Eldridge after he left the team to attend his grandfather's funeral in Virginia. Eldridge is expected to be away from the Giants for their entire three-game series against the Reds before rejoining the team ahead of Thursday's series opener versus the Diamondbacks.

The Giants plan to place Eldridge on the bereavement list prior to Monday's game. San Francisco will likely use a rotation of players in the designated-hitter spot until Eldridge rejoins the club Thursday.

Schwarber went 1-for-5 with a two-run homer in Sunday's 6-4 win over the Cardinals.

Schwarber capped the Phillies' six-run ninth inning and improbable comeback with a two-run, game-winning blast off Riley O'Brien. It was Schwarber's league-leading 39th home run this season and his second in his last two contests. He's gone 15-for-64 (.266) with six homers in his last 16 games, boosting his slash line to .245/.361/.532 with 78 RBI and 76 runs scored across 559 plate appearances this year.

Ward is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cubs.

Ward started the past four games after missing the previous five contests due to quadriceps soreness, and he'll check out of the starting nine Sunday to get some scheduled rest. Dominic Canzone is serving as the designated hitter while Victor Robles starts in right field.

Gasper is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Giants.

Though he'll head to the bench while southpaw Matt Wilkinson starts for the Giants, the switch-hitting Gasper looks to have moved into a regular role as the Red Sox's designated hitter versus right-handed pitching since being recalled from Triple-A Worcester a week ago. While starting in each of Boston's last five games, Gasper went 5-for-15 with three home runs, one double, two walks, eight RBI and three runs.
