  • Brian Anderson RF | ATL

Marlins' Brian Anderson: Cleared for soft-toss work

Anderson (shoulder) is scheduled to do some soft tossing Monday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

Anderson doesn't seem to have made substantial progress in his recovery from his left shoulder sprain since landing on the injured list July 24, but his ability to do some throwing Monday at least suggests that he's no longer shut down. A timeline for his return from the IL likely won't come into focus until he's able to resume full baseball activities.

  • Gio Urshela 3B | MIN

Twins' Gio Urshela: Back from paternity leave

The Twins reinstated Urshela (personal) from the paternity list ahead of Monday's game against the Tigers, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports.

Urshela spent the maximum three days away from the team while observing the birth of his child. Now that he's back with the Twins, the new father should settle back into a near-everyday role at third base as the team begins a seven-game week.

  • Mike Moustakas 3B | CHW

Reds' Mike Moustakas: Held out Monday

Moustakas is not in the lineup for Monday's game against the Marlins, according to Mark Sheldon of MLB.com.

Southpaw Jesus Luzardo will open on the mound for the Marlins, so Moustakas and his .513 OPS against lefties will open the game on the bench. Donovan Solano will enter the lineup in place of Moustakas.

  • Austin Riley 3B | ATL

Braves' Austin Riley: Ends July with more XBH

Riley went 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI in Sunday's 1-0 win over the Diamondbacks.

Riley ended a spectacular July in style, bringing home Matt Olson on a walkoff two-bagger in the bottom of the ninth. He finished with a .423 average and 26 extra-base hits (11 home runs and 15 doubles) in 26 games on the month, breaking the previous franchise record (25) established by Hall of Famer Hank Aaron in July 1961.

  • Nationals' Ildemaro Vargas: Replacing Adrianza on roster

The Nationals plan to select Vargas' contract from Triple-A Rochester prior to Monday's game against the Mets, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports.

Vargas will be brought aboard as the Nationals' new utility man after Ehire Adrianza was dealt to Atlanta earlier Monday. The 31-year-old journeyman previously saw 10 games of action with the Cubs earlier this season and owns a lifetime .227/.265/.354 slash line across 407 plate appearances in the majors. He's capable of backing up all four infield spots and also has limited experience at either corner-outfield position.

  • Zack Gelof 3B | ATH

Athletics' Zack Gelof: Playing again at Double-A

Gelof (shoulder) has gone 8-for-37 (.216 average) with two home runs and a 9:12 BB:K over nine games since being reinstated from Double-A Midland's 7-day injured list July 14.

Gelof was sidelined for approximately a month and a half with a torn labrum in his left shoulder before rejoining the Midland lineup shortly before the All-Star break. Since the injury was to his non-throwing shoulder, Gelof has been able to pick up starts at both second and third base upon returning from the IL. The 22-year-old is slashing .298/.371/.444 with six home runs and eight stolen bases over 229 plate appearances for Midland in 2022.

  • Kevin Newman 3B | LAA

Pirates' Kevin Newman: Knocks three hits

Newman went 3-for-5 with a double, a run scored and a stolen base in Sunday's 8-2 loss to the Phillies.

Newman swiped second base after singling in the first inning before doubling and scoring a run in the third. It was his fourth stolen base of the year and third in his last 12 games. In 18 games since returning from the injured list, Newman has gone 23-for-73 (.315) with eight runs scored and nine extra-base hits. He's slashing .289/.338/.421 through 32 games this season.

  • Evan Longoria 3B | ARI

Giants' Evan Longoria: Begins running progression

Longoria (hamstring) said he'll start a running progression Sunday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Longoria was diagnosed with a Grade 1 hamstring strain after landing on the injured list last week, and his quick return to running is an encouraging sign for his recovery. The veteran third baseman is still likely at least a week or two away from rejoining the Giants and is officially without a timeline for his return.

  • Yoan Moncada 3B | LAA

White Sox's Yoan Moncada: Takes Sunday off

Moncada is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Athletics.

Moncada will sit for the first time since the All-Star break after going 4-for-29 with three doubles, three runs and four RBI in the White Sox's first eight games of the second half. Leury Garcia will spell Moncada at third base.

  • Taylor Walls SS | TB

Rays' Taylor Walls: Sitting in series finale

Walls is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Guardians.

Walls will sit for the second time in three games, and his leash as the Rays' everyday shortstop could be loosening while he struggles to make a consistent impact at the dish. Unless he's deployed off the bench Sunday, Walls will finish July with a lowly .188/.296/.290 slash line over 23 games.
