  • Tyler Nevin 3B | ATH

Orioles' Tyler Nevin: Sent down to Triple-A

The Orioles optioned Nevin to Triple-A Norfolk on Wednesday, Zachary Silver of MLB.com reports.

He'll cede his spot on the active roster to top prospect Gunnar Henderson, who will be eligible to play in the postseason after he was officially promoted from Triple-A Norfolk on Wednesday. Nevin could end up rejoining the Orioles in September when the active roster expands to 28 men, but he'll likely be little more than a right-handed-hitting option off the bench and an occasional starter versus left-handed pitching.

  • Orioles' Gunnar Henderson: Promoted to big leagues Wednesday

The Orioles selected Henderson's contract from Triple-A Norfolk ahead of Wednesday's game against the Guardians, Zachary Silver of MLB.com reports.

Though Baltimore was expected to wait until the active roster expanded to 28 men Thursday before moving their top prospect to the big leagues, Henderson will be formally called up a day earlier than anticipated, which makes him eligible to compete in the postseason if the Orioles should earn a wild-card spot. The 21-year-old began the season at Double-A Bowie but thrived at Norfolk following an early-June promotion, slashing .288/.390/.504 with 11 home runs and 10 stolen bases in 65 games. He picked up starts at all four infield spots at Triple-A and could handle a near-everyday role for Baltimore.

  • Jace Peterson SS | ARI

Brewers' Jace Peterson: Exits starting nine

Peterson is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Pirates, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.

Though he's on the bench for the series finale against Pirates right-hander Zach Thompson, Peterson started against right-handed pitchers in each of the past three contests and went 3-for-8 with a run scored. At least for the time being, Peterson may have overtaken Luis Urias as the Brewers' preferred third baseman with the latter slashing .153/.287/.292 in August. Urias will get a chance to try and right the ship Wednesday while Peterson rests.

  • Orioles' Gunnar Henderson: Set for call-up Thursday

Henderson is set to join the Orioles' taxi squad Wednesday and is expected to be formally called up from Triple-A Norfolk on Thursday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.

The 21-year-old is the Orioles' top prospect and has spent most of his minor-league career on the left side of the infield, but he's gotten some exposure to first and second base at Norfolk recently to give him additional avenues to playing time once he arrives in the big leagues. From a production standpoint, Henderson certainly looks big-league ready, as he'll finish his time at Norfolk with a .288/.390/.504 slash line and a palatable 26.4 percent strikeout rate while slugging 11 home runs and notching 10 stolen bases in 65 games. Given that none of the Orioles' four primary starters in the infield (Ryan Mountcastle, Rougned Odor, Ramon Urias and Jorge Mateo) own a wRC+ mark above 101 on the season, Henderson should be a candidate to take on a near-everyday role while manager Brandon Hyde likely rotates rest days among the five players.

  • Evan Longoria 3B | ARI

Giants' Evan Longoria: Goes 1-for-5 in return

Longoria (hamstring) went 1-for-5 in Tuesday's 4-3 loss to the Padres.

Longoria returned after a one-game absence due to hamstring tightness. The third baseman served as the designated hitter Tuesday, which could continue in the near term in an effort to avoid aggravation of the injury that has bothered him multiple times this year. He's slashing .253/.330/.480 with 12 home runs, 28 RBI, 29 runs scored and nine doubles through 224 plate appearances.

  • Brett Baty 3B | NYM

Mets' Brett Baty: Managing thumb issue

Baty was unavailable during Tuesday's loss to the Dodgers due to a thumb injury, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

The 22-year-old suffered the injury over the weekend against the Rockies and was held out of the lineup Tuesday, and he apparently wasn't available as a pinch hitter. Baty should be considered day-to-day heading into Wednesday's matchup with Los Angeles.

  • Evan Longoria 3B | ARI

Giants' Evan Longoria: Returning to lineup Tuesday

Longoria (hamstring) will serve as the designated hitter Tuesday against the Padres, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Longoria sat out Monday's contest after suffering a mild hamstring injury during Sunday's matchup with Minnesota, but he'll rejoin the starting nine after missing only one game. The 36-year-old has a .918 OPS through 16 games in August, though he's 1-for-11 with a double, a run and six strikeouts over his past four appearances.

  • Isaac Paredes 3B | HOU

Rays' Isaac Paredes: Scratched from Tuesday's lineup

Paredes was scratched from Wednesday's lineup against the Marlins.

The 23-year-old was initially penciled in to start at first base Tuesday, but he was replaced by Christian Bethancourt when Tampa Bay released a revised starting nine. It's unclear if Paredes is dealing with an injury or if manager Kevin Cash simply decided on a late lineup change.

  • Matt Reynolds 3B | CIN

Reds' Matt Reynolds: Nearing rehab assignment

Reds manager David Bell said Tuesday that Reynolds (hip) will begin a rehab assignment soon, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Bell didn't specify whether Reynolds will head to the minors later this week or at some point next week, but the veteran utility man at least looks to be progressing from the left hip injury that landed him on the 10-day injured list Aug. 23. Whenever he makes his way back from the IL, Reynolds is expected to fill a bench role for the Reds, with most of his opportunities to start likely coming against left-handed pitching.

  • Diamondbacks' Emmanuel Rivera: Resting Tuesday

Rivera is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Phillies.

Rivera has been on a nice run at the plate, but he will be held out Tuesday with the Diamondbacks facing a tough right-hander in Aaron Nola.
