Athletics' Zack Gelof: Extends hitting streak to 24 games

Gelof went 2-for-5 with a double and three runs scored in Sunday's 9-7 loss to the Angels.

After being held out of the lineup Saturday, Gelof returned Sunday and came around to score a season-high three times in the high-scoring affair. The infielder wasted little time extending his hitting streak to 24 games, lacing a single in the first inning. Per Theo DeRosa of MLB.com, the 26-year-old became just the fourth Athletics player since 1961 to record a hitting streak of at least 24 games. The 27-year-old has been on fire in June, slashing .422/.460/.689 with two homers, six doubles, nine RBI, seven runs and two stolen bases across 16 appearances this month while solidifying himself as the Orioles' top option at the hot corner. Angels' Donovan Walton: Clubs three-run homer

Walton went 1-for-3 with a three-run home run in Sunday's 9-7 win over the Athletics.

The A's jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, but Walton's blast in the second quickly put a dent in the advantage. He has gone 13-for-24 (.542) over his last eight games. Walton is a versatile defender, but he has seen most of his time lately at designated hitter in a strong-side platoon role. His blast Sunday was critical, as it erased a three-run deficit in the eighth inning. The infield prospect is now batting .271 with three homers, 11 RBI, seven runs scored, two doubles and a stolen base over 52 plate appearances in the majors this season.

Two of those hits went for extra bases, but his consistency has faded a bit after a strong initial showing when he returned from a stint with Triple-A St. Paul. • Zack Gelof 3B | ATH

Athletics' Zack Gelof: Leading off in return

Gelof will start at second base and bat leadoff Sunday against the Angels in his return to the lineup after sitting out Saturday's 7-0 loss due to general soreness, MLB.com reports.

Though the Athletics didn't specifically indicate that Gelof's absence Saturday was related to being hit in the head by a pitch a night earlier, he may have been held out of the lineup for precautionary reasons. He feels well enough to return to the starting nine Sunday as the Athletics' leadoff man, marking his third consecutive appearance atop the batting order.

  • Colt Emerson SS | SEA

Mariners' Colt Emerson: On bench Sunday

Emerson is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Red Sox.

J.P. Crawford is handling shortstop in the series finale versus Boston while Weston Wilson starts at the hot corner.

The 26-year-old will look to extend his 23-game hit streak, during which he's batting .348 (31-for-89) with six doubles, five homers, two steals, 12 RBI and 16 runs.
