Athletics' Zack Gelof: Back in action Sunday
Gelof (head) is starting at second base and batting leadoff Sunday against the Angels.
Gelof was held out of Saturday's starting nine after being hit by a pitch in the ear flap of his helmet Friday, but he'll rejoin the lineup after sitting out just one game. The 26-year-old will look to extend his 23-game hit streak, during which he's batting .348 (31-for-89) with six doubles, five homers, two steals, 12 RBI and 16 runs.

Athletics' Zack Gelof: Leading off in return
Gelof will start at second base and bat leadoff Sunday against the Angels in his return to the lineup after sitting out Saturday's 7-0 loss due to general soreness, MLB.com reports.
Though the Athletics didn't specifically indicate that Gelof's absence Saturday was related to being hit in the head by a pitch a night earlier, he may have been held out of the lineup for precautionary reasons. He feels well enough to return to the starting nine Sunday as the Athletics' leadoff man, marking his third consecutive appearance atop the batting order.

Athletics' Zack Gelof: Held out after Friday's HBP
Athletics manager Mark Kotsay said that Gelof came in Saturday "just not feeling at his best," so he decided to give Gelof a full day off, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
On a positive note, Kotsay confirmed that Gelof did not need to go through concussion protocol after being hit on the earflap of his helmet in the 10th inning of Friday's game. Further, the skipper said Gelof could be back as soon as Sunday. Gelof is currently riding a 23-game hitting streak, during which he's slashed .360/.412/.596 with six doubles, five homers, 13 RBI and 16 runs.

Gelof went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run, a stolen base and a second run scored in Saturday's 7-5 win over the Rockies.
Gelof got the start in right field for this contest. He had been primarily playing second base or third base, but the recent returns of Max Muncy and Jacob Wilson have crowded the infield. Carlos Cortes has also slumped a bit lately, which could leave right field up for grabs. Gelof has been excellent at the plate, hitting safely in 17 straight games. He's gone 23-for-67 (.343) in that span while adding three homers, eight RBI and five doubles. Overall, he's batting .271 with a .791 OPS, nine homers, seven steals, 25 RBI, 30 runs scored, eight doubles and a triple over 54 contests this season.

Gelof took former teammate Joel Kuhnel deep in the eighth inning to tack on an insurance run for the Athletics. Gelof has hit safely in 14 straight games dating back to May 25, going 19-for-55 (.345) with two homers and six RBI in that span. The infielder is playing second base against southpaws and third base versus right-handers, but he's been too hot at the plate recently to get platooned. If Gelof's hitting turns cold, Max Muncy could poach some of the time at third since both players are right-handed hitters.

Gelof blooped an opposite-field double in the fourth inning before adding a single in the ninth frame, joining Darell Hernaiz as the only Athletics to record multiple hits in the blowout loss. Gelof logged a hit in all three contests against Seattle, totaling five knocks in the series and marking a step in the right direction after he went 6-for-40 (.150) across the previous 10 games. Gelof didn't reach in either of his first two plate appearances, but he smacked a run-scoring triple in the fifth inning and followed that with a two-run homer in the seventh. The 26-year-old started for the seventh time in the A's past eight games, and he's delivered a .321 batting average with two home runs, six RBI, six runs and a stolen base during that span. Gelof has gotten starts at second base and third base as well as in center field, and he may be playing his way into a permanent roster spot even after Max Muncy (hand) and Denzel Clarke (foot) return from the injured list.
