  • Will Smith C | LAD

Dodgers' Will Smith: Idle again Friday

Smith (hand) isn't in the lineup for Friday's game against the Giants.

Smith will head to the bench for the second straight game and the seventh time in the Dodgers' last eight contests while he continues to nurse a sore right hand. Ben Rortvedt will receive another start at catcher as a result and bat ninth.

  • Michael Toglia 1B | COL

Rockies' Michael Toglia: Returned to Triple-A

The Rockies optioned Toglia to Triple-A Albuquerque on Friday, Kevin Henry of The Denver Gazette reports.

Toglia was brought up from Triple-A on Tuesday, but after going 0-for-7 with six strikeouts across three games, he'll lose his spot on the active roster. Blaine Crim was recalled from Albuquerque in a corresponding move.

  • Blaine Crim 1B | TEX

Rockies' Blaine Crim: Set for COL debut

The Rockies recalled Crim from Triple-A Albuquerque on Friday, Kevin Henry of The Denver Gazette reports.

Colorado claimed Crim off waivers in early August from Texas, and the first baseman has slashed .273/.360/.424 in 114 plate appearances with Albuquerque since. He'll make his Rockies debut if he gets into a game. Crim is expected to serve as the team's primary first baseman while Warming Bernabel (concussion) is sidelined. Michael Toglia was optioned to Triple-A in a corresponding move.

  • Padres' David Morgan: Heads to IL

The Padres placed Morgan on the 15-day injured list Friday, retroactive to Sept. 9, due to right shoulder inflammation.

Morgan has been a reliable arm for the Padres out of the bullpen this season, posting a 2.80 ERA across 45 innings. The 25-year-old rookie will head to the injured list Friday, and he'll be eligible to return Sept. 24, two days before the Padres' final regular-season game. Per AJ Cassavell of MLB.com, Morgan intends to return once eligible, and his placement on the IL was precautionary. JP Sears was recalled from Triple-A El Paso in a corresponding move.

  • JP Sears SP | SD

Padres' JP Sears: Officially called up

The Padres recalled Sears from Triple-A El Paso to start Friday's game against the Rockies.

Sears will give the Padres' regular starters an additional day of rest by making a spot start Friday. The 29-year-old southpaw has appeared in three games with the Padres this season, allowing nine runs with an 8:3 K:BB across 14.2 innings. David Morgan (shoulder) was placed on the 15-day injured list in a corresponding move.

  • Trevor Megill RP | MIL

Brewers' Trevor Megill: Hits minor snag in recovery

Megill (elbow) didn't recover as well as anticipated after his most recent bullpen session but will throw another bullpen Saturday before facing possibly batters next week, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

Megill has been working his way back from a right flexor strain, and while he didn't recover as well as he hoped, his timeline for return doesn't seem to have changed much. His initial plan was to return Tuesday, but a return later next week seems more likely given his tentatively scheduled live BP session.

  • Pirates' Colin Holderman: Dispatched to Triple-A

The Pirates optioned Holderman to Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday.

Holderman will end up as the odd man out of Pittsburgh's bullpen following Justin Lawrence's (elbow) return from the injured list. Holderman has taken a massive step back this year, posting a 7.01 ERA through 25.2 innings in the big leagues after logging a 3.16 ERA in 2024. Despite his performance, he remains a candidate to return to Pittsburgh if/when the Bucs need bullpen depth for their final stretch of games.

  • Pirates' Justin Lawrence: Activated off injured list

The Pirates reinstated Lawrence (elbow) from the 60-day injured list Friday.

Elbow inflammation has kept Lawrence on the injured list since late April, but after more than four months on the shelf, the 30-year-old has been cleared to help out the Pirates for the final stage of the regular season. Lawrence was off to a strong start before getting hurt, posting a 0.79 ERA in 11.1 frames, but he struggled during his rehab assignment while surrendering seven earned runs in 7.1 innings. He'll likely be limited to middle relief upon rejoining Pittsburgh's bullpen. Meanwhile, the Pirates will send Colin Holderman to Triple-A Indianapolis to clear a roster spot.

  • Diamondbacks' Ildemaro Vargas: Late add to lineup

Vargas will bat second and play second base Friday against Minnesota.

Vargas was left out of the initial starting nine Friday, but he'll jump into the lineup after Ketel Marte (foot) was scratched. Vargas has generated a hit in five of his last six games.

  • Ketel Marte 2B | ARI

    Diamondbacks' Ketel Marte: Scratched Friday

Marte (foot) was scratched from Friday's lineup against the Twins.

Marte was originally in line to play Friday after exiting Wednesday's game with a bruised foot, but the D-backs will err on the side of caution and keep him on the bench for at least one game. Ildemaro Vargas will step in to cover second base and bat second while Marte rests.
