  • Cubs' David Peterson: Part of Saturday's pitching plan

Cubs manager Craig Counsell said Wednesday that Peterson will "be involved" in the pitching plan for Saturday's game in Seattle, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. With Edward Cabrera (blister) back on the 15-day injured list, a spot in the Cubs' rotation is available. It was Peterson who lost his spot in the rotation when Cabrera returned this past weekend, and Peterson is poised to slot back in either as a traditional starter or bulk reliever Saturday. The southpaw has logged a 4.06 ERA and 32:17 K:BB over 44.1 innings covering eight starts and one relief appearance for the Cubs.

  • Cubs' David Peterson: Shifting to bullpen role

The Cubs announced that Peterson will be moved to the bullpen after Edward Cabrera (hamstring) was reinstated from the 15-day injured list Sunday, Patrick Mooney of The Athletic reports. Rather than shifting to a six-man rotation, manager Craig Counsell will send Peterson to the bullpen to provide the club with a multi-inning arm to replace Javier Assad, who was optioned to Triple-A Iowa on Sunday. After a disastrous run with the Mets to begin the season, Peterson had pitched more credibly since being acquired by the Cubs in late June. Over eight starts with Chicago, Peterson has gone 4-1 with a 4.19 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 31:16 K:BB across 43 innings.

  • Cubs' David Peterson: Nabs seventh win

Peterson (7-7) earned the win against the Nationals on Wednesday, allowing four runs (three earned) on nine hits and three walks in six innings. He struck out five. Peterson got knocked around a bit Wednesday, but he hung in there for his sixth consecutive start of at least five innings. The southpaw has conceded three runs or fewer in all but one of first eight outings for the Cubs, though the one exception was a 10-run implosion versus St. Louis on July 3. Peterson has a 4.19 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 31:16 K:BB over 43 innings for the Cubs ahead of his next scheduled appearance against the crosstown-rival White Sox.

  • Cubs' David Peterson: Will start Thursday

Peterson is slated to start Thursday's game against Toronto at Wrigley Field, Jared Wyllys of AllCHGO.com reports. Though trade-deadline pickups Kevin Gausman and Clay Holmes (fibula) are slated to make their first starts for the Cubs this weekend, Peterson will keep his spot in the rotation for now. The left-hander tied his season high with eight strikeouts in his most recent start last Saturday against the Yankees and owns a 4.36 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 22:10 K:BB in 33 innings over his first six starts with the Cubs since being acquired from the Mets on June 25.

  • Cubs' David Peterson: Strikes out eight in no-decision

Peterson did not factor into the decision in Saturday's 5-2 win against the Yankees, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and no walks with eight strikeouts over 6.1 innings. Despite posting a quality start and tying a season high with eight punchouts, Peterson departed in line for the loss after allowing a solo homer in the seventh inning before the Cubs eventually rallied to take him off the hook. The southpaw has been excellent to open the second half, yielding just three earned runs over three outings with a solid 15:3 K:BB in that span. He'll carry a 5.52 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 85:40 K:BB across 101 innings with the Mets and Cubs into a home matchup with the Blue Jays next week.

  • Cubs' David Peterson: Posts best start of season

Peterson (5-7) notched the win over Detroit on Tuesday, allowing three hits and issuing one walk while striking out four batters over 6.2 scoreless innings. Peterson was sharp, yielding just one extra-base hit and four total baserunners. He retired 11 straight batters in one stretch and completed six frames for the first time this season. Peterson has won two of his four starts since joining Chicago in late June, and he's given up two runs or fewer in three of those outings, though the lone exception was a 10-run, 3.2-inning blowup against St. Louis. The veteran lefty has shown enough to hold down a spot in the rotation at least until some of the Cubs' injured starters get healthy, and he's lined up to make his next start on the road against the Cardinals.

  • Cubs' David Peterson: Shines in Cubs debut

Peterson (4-6) notched the win Saturday against the Brewers, allowing two runs on five hits and no walks in 5.2 innings. He struck out two. Making his Cubs debut, Peterson immediately entered the rotation after bouncing around as a swingman with the Mets. The 30-year-old left-hander fell one out shy of what could've been his first quality start of the year, but it was still his longest outing so far. Peterson, who entered Saturday with a high groundball rate of 52.9 percent, could benefit from the elite defense of Nico Hoerner and Dansby Swanson in the Cubs' middle infield going forward. He'll carry a 5.86 ERA, 1.59 WHIP and 65:30 K:BB over 73.2 innings into his next scheduled outing against the Cardinals.

  • Cubs' David Peterson: Dealt to Cubs

The Cubs acquired Peterson from the Mets on Wednesday in exchange for infielder Cole Mathis (undisclosed), Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. Peterson had endured a rough season with the Mets, turning in a 6.09 ERA and 1.65 WHIP in 68 innings across 16 appearances (eight starts). However, the Cubs will gladly take all the rotation arms they can get at this point, as Edward Cabrera (hamstring) and Ben Brown (neck) became the fifth and sixth Chicago starting pitchers to land on the injured list Wednesday. Peterson is expected to provide immediate aid to the rotation and could make his first start with the Cubs as soon as Friday at Milwaukee, after he threw 79 pitches Sunday in his final appearance with the Mets.

  • Mets' David Peterson: Implodes against Cincinnati

Peterson (3-5) took the loss against the Reds on Tuesday, allowing six runs on 11 hits and three walks while striking out four across five innings. Peterson put the Mets in a hole early after yielding an RBI double to Eugenio Suarez in the first inning before giving up another three runs in the fourth. It could have been a worse stat line for Peterson, given that he gave up at least two baserunners in four of the six innings in which he pitched. The 11 hits allowed were a season high, and the six earned runs were his most in a start since April 29 against the Nationals (seven). Peterson now sits at a 5.57 ERA and 1.67 WHIP over 53.1 innings this season, and the 66 hits he's given up are tied for fifth most in the National League. His next start is lined up for next week on the road against the Mariners.

  • Mets' David Peterson: Secures win in bulk-relief outing

Peterson (2-4) allowed two runs on six hits, three walks and a hit batsman while striking out eight over four innings to earn the win Saturday versus the Yankees. This was Peterson's third consecutive bulk-relief appearance, a span that has seen him earn his first two wins of the season. In his three outings in May, he's allowed seven runs (four earned) with a 17:3 K:BB over 13 innings. Overall, he has a 5.40 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 46:17 K:BB through 43.1 innings. Peterson's looked more effective working behind an opener, so that trend could continue for his next projected outing, which lines up to be on the road against the Nationals.

  • Mets' David Peterson: Slated for bulk role Sunday

Peterson will operate in a bulk-relief role in Sunday's game against the Diamondbacks, Laura Albanese of Newsday reports. As was the case in the Mets' 4-2 win over the Rockies this past Monday, Huascar Brazoban will serve as the team's opener. Peterson took the mound after Brazoban and Austin Warren in Monday's contest and ended up picking up the win after allowing two runs on three hits and no walks while striking out six across four frames. Peterson has yielded two earned runs or fewer in three of his last four outings but still sits at a 6.29 ERA and 1.60 WHIP across 34.1 innings this season.

  • Mets' David Peterson: Captures first win in bulk role

Peterson (1-4) earned the win Monday against the Rockies. He allowed two runs on three hits and no walks while striking out six over four innings. Peterson, working behind Huascar Brazoban and Austin Warren, turned in a respectable effort in bulk relief, good enough to earn his first win of the season. The southpaw held the opposition scoreless through his first three innings before allowing a pair of runs in the seventh inning, underscoring his struggles to work deep into games and navigate a lineup multiple times. Across 34.1 innings in 2026, Peterson owns a 6.29 ERA and 1.60 WHIP with a 35:14 K:BB. The 30-year-old will look to stay in the win column in his next outing, tentatively scheduled for Sunday against the Diamondbacks, though it remains to be seen if he works behind an opener again.

  • Mets' David Peterson: Set to operate in bulk role

Peterson will pitch in bulk relief behind an opener in Monday's series opener against the Rockies in Colorado, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Peterson will follow an opener for the second time this season after last doing so April 19 against the Cubs, when he tossed 3.2 scoreless innings while allowing three hits in the team's 2-1 loss to Chicago. The southpaw has posted a disappointing 6.53 ERA and 1.71 WHIP with 29 strikeouts over 30.1 innings in seven appearances (five starts) with New York this season.

  • Mets' David Peterson: Losing ways continue

Peterson (0-4) took the loss Wednesday against the Nationals, allowing seven runs on five hits and three walks in 3.2 innings. He struck out five. Peterson entered in long relief in his prior two outings, but he didn't fare well in his return to the rotation. The left-hander coughed up a season-worst seven runs Wednesday, walking multiple batters for the fifth time in as many starts on the year. Peterson has a ghastly 6.53 ERA, 1.71 WHIP and 29:14 K:BB over 30.1 innings, so he'll be tough to trust in fantasy lineups during his next scheduled outing in Colorado.

  • Mets' David Peterson: Starting Wednesday

Peterson will start Wednesday's game against the Nationals, Andrew Tredinnick of The Bergen Record reports. The left-hander worked out of the bullpen in his past two appearances -- including one in bulk relief -- but will return to the rotation Wednesday after allowing just one run across seven innings as a reliever. It's been an up-and-down campaign for Peterson, who fired 5.1 scoreless frames in his season debut but followed up with an 8.79 ERA in his next three starts.

  • Mets' David Peterson: Working in bullpen this week

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Tuesday that Peterson will have his turn in the rotation skipped this week and will work out of the bullpen, SNY.tv reports. While starting in each of his first four appearances of the season, Peterson struggled to a 6.41 ERA and 1.83 WHIP, but he delivered better results while working in bulk relief behind opener Tobias Myers in Sunday's loss to the Cubs, tossing 3.2 scoreless innings. Despite the strong showing out of the bullpen, Peterson's grasp on a full-time spot in the rotation still appears to be tenuous, and the Mets will skip his turn this week and instead call up Christian Scott from Triple-A Syracuse to serve as their fifth starter Thursday versus the Twins. The Mets haven't revealed their plans for the rotation beyond this week, but if Scott performs well in his 2026 big-league debut, it's possible that he sticks as a starter over Peterson moving forward.

  • Mets' David Peterson: Struggles in defeat

Peterson (0-1) took the loss against San Francisco on Thursday, allowing six runs (five earned) on nine hits and two walks while striking out five batters over 4.1 innings. The Mets gave Peterson a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but he quickly gave that back plus more, as the Giants responded with three runs in the bottom half of the frame. Things didn't get any better for Peterson from there -- he yielded two more runs in the third and was charged with one more following his departure in the fifth. Peterson did manage to fan five batters, but his overall line was pretty destructive for fantasy managers who deployed him. This was certainly a letdown for Peterson after he shut out Pittsburgh across 5.1 innings during his season debut March 28.

  • Mets' David Peterson: Three clean frames Wednesday

Peterson gave up one hit and two walks over three scoreless innings during Wednesday's exhibition game against Team Israel. He struck out four. The Israeli WBC lineup doesn't have any big MLB names in it, and Peterson had little trouble navigating his three frames on 48 pitches (28 strikes). The southpaw is locked into a rotation spot for the Mets after throwing a career-high 168.2 innings in 2025, but his 4.22 ERA and 1.37 WHIP were significant downgrades from his 2024 numbers.

  • Mets' David Peterson: Avoids arbitration with Mets

The Mets and Peterson avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $8.1 million contract Thursday, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports. It's a nice bump in pay for Peterson, who had been eligible for arbitration for the final time. The lefty faded down the stretch for the Mets in 2025 but still finished with a solid 4.22 ERA and 150:65 K:BB over 168.2 innings covering 30 starts.

  • Mets' David Peterson: Hit hard against Cubs

Peterson allowed five runs on five hits and two walks while striking out one batter in 1.1 innings Tuesday against the Cubs. He did not factor into the decision. Peterson continued his stretch of horrendous starts in Tuesday's outing. In nine starts dating back to Aug. 6, Peterson has allowed at least four runs in six of them and has an 8.42 ERA and 1.78 WHIP over that span. The Cubs strung together a pair of runs in the first and another three in the second, forcing a quick hook for Peterson after he threw just 42 pitches (22 strikes). Manager Carlos Mendoza mentioned afterward that Peterson could play a big role for the remaining five games of the regular season, potentially pitching out of the bullpen. As of now, Peterson is lined up to start Sunday against the Nationals, though that would change if he's used in relief in advance of that game.
