The Cardinals selected Saggese's contract from Triple-A Memphis on Tuesday.

Brendan Donovan (foot) has been unavailable the last couple days and the Cardinals have been wanting to give Masyn Winn a little more rest, so Saggese should pick up some starts in the middle infield for St. Louis down the stretch. The 22-year-old got off to a slow start with Memphis this season but had turned it on since the beginning of July, slashing .291/.351/.524 with 12 home runs over 55 games. Saggese is starting at shortstop and batting seventh Tuesday versus the Reds in what will be his major-league debut.

The Cardinals optioned Scott to Triple-A Memphis on Tuesday.

Scott hadn't made a start over the past week after Michael Siani returned from the injured list, so the Cardinals will send him back to Memphis where he can play every day. Thomas Saggese has been called up in a corresponding move.

De La Cruz is absent from the lineup for Tuesday's contest versus the Marlins.

De La Cruz had started the last two games but before that had been out of the lineup five times in a 10-game span. He's sporting just a .497 OPS and 30.6 percent strikeout rate since joining the Pirates. Billy Cook will play right field and bat eighth Tuesday.

Goodman will start at catcher and bat eighth in Tuesday's game against the Tigers.

It's his second straight start at catcher and his third start at the position over the last five contests. Seemingly, the Rockies want to find out if Goodman -- who has primarily been an outfielder during his time in the majors -- can be a legitimate option at catcher moving forward.

Doyle (finger) will start in center field and bat third in Tuesday's game versus the Tigers.

Doyle missed one game with a minor left pinky injury but is ready to roll for Tuesday's series opener. He's off to a slow start this month with just three hits in his first 21 at-bats.

Jones is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game in Detroit.

It's the second straight game that Jones' name has been absent from the lineup after he went just 3-for-17 with 10 strikeouts in his first five contests this month. Sam Hilliard is in left field for the Rockies in the series opener.

Ferris has a 3.09 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 21:13 K:BB in 23.1 innings over six starts since getting promoted to Double-A Tulsa on Aug. 2.

The 20-year-old southpaw was much more impressive through 20 starts for High-A Great Lakes, logging a 3.39 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 119 strikeouts in 98.1 innings. He threw 56 innings at Single-A in 2023 before getting traded from the Cubs to the Dodgers in the offseason deal that sent Michael Busch to Chicago. Ferris has built up to 121.2 innings and doesn't turn 21 until January, so this season has been a big success. He should return to Double-A next year and has the upside to keep climbing prospect rankings.

The Marlins claimed Petersen off waivers Tuesday.

The 30-year-old was designated for assignment by the Dodgers over the weekend, and he didn't make it through much of the waiver order before being claimed. Petersen posted a 6.43 ERA in 14 innings for the Dodgers this season, though he's been dominant at the Triple-A level with a 1.64 ERA, 0.76 WHIP and 44:8 K:BB over 33 frames.

The Rockies recalled Gordon from Triple-A Albuquerque on Tuesday.

Gordon has posted a 7.55 ERA over seven starts with the big club this season. The 26-year-old looks to be in line to serve in a long-relief role this time around.

The Rockies placed Gomber on the paternity list Tuesday.

The left-hander was expected to start in the three-games series at Detroit that begins Tuesday, but he'll instead step away from the team for a few days to be with his growing family. Gomber could be back with the team -- and in the rotation -- for Friday's game versus the Cubs.
