  • Padres' Stephen Kolek: Awarded another start

Kolek is slated to start Sunday's game against the Cardinals in St. Louis.

Kolek will make another turn through the San Diego rotation after he was recalled from Triple-A El Paso on Tuesday to fill the vacant fifth starter spot. Taking the hill for the big club for the first time since July 5, Kolek was dealt the loss against the Marlins after giving up three earned runs on eight hits and one walk over 5.2 innings. In 13 starts with San Diego this season, Kolek has gone 3-5 with a 4.28 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 54:23 K:BB across 73.2 innings.

  • Braves' Daysbel Hernandez: Back in majors

Atlanta recalled Hernandez from Triple-A Gwinnett on Sunday.

The right-hander was optioned to Triple-A just before the All-Star break but is back in the big leagues with Grant Holmes (elbow) landing on the injured list. Hernandez had made 30 relief appearances in the majors this season and has a 2.10 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 30:24 K:BB over 30 innings.

  • Dustin May SP | STL

Dodgers' Dustin May: Back in starting role Sunday

May is slated to start Sunday's game against the Red Sox at Fenway Park.

For the first time all season, May worked out of the bullpen in his most recent appearance against the Twins on Monday, when he tossed 4.2 scoreless frames in bulk relief behind Shohei Ohtani, who was limited to three innings. Ohtani isn't scheduled to pitch again until Wednesday, so the Dodgers will return May to his traditional starting role for the series finale in Boston. Over his 17 starts this season, May has gone 5-6 with a 4.96 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 88:40 K:BB across 94.1 innings.

  • Grant Holmes SP | ATL

Braves' Grant Holmes: Moves to injured list

Atlanta placed Holmes on the 15-day injured list Sunday due to right elbow inflammation.

The right-hander exited his start in Saturday's 6-5 loss to the Rangers after four innings due to the injury, and he'll be sidelined for at least the next couple of weeks and potentially longer. Atlanta now has all five members of its Opening Day rotation on the IL, with Holmes joining Chris Sale (ribs), Spencer Schwellenbach (elbow), Reynaldo Lopez (shoulder) and AJ Smith-Shawver (elbow) on the shelf.

  • Erik Miller RP | SF

Giants' Erik Miller: Completes bullpen session

Miller (elbow) threw a 20-pitch bullpen session Saturday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Miller said he felt good after the workout, which featured all fastballs thrown at about 80 percent, and the expectation is that he'll be ready to incorporate all of his pitches at a higher level of intensity in his next bullpen session Tuesday. The southpaw will need a rehab assignment as he works his way back from an elbow sprain, with the Giants anticipating his return from the 15-day injured list to come in the second or third week of August.

  • Giants' Carson Whisenhunt: Could make MLB debut this week

Triple-A Sacramento scratched Whisenhunt from his scheduled start Saturday, hinting that the Giants could call him up this week, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

With Hayden Birdsong getting demoted to Triple-A and Landen Roupp (elbow) landing on the injured list, the Giants have two openings in the rotation. A bullpen day will cover Sunday's contest, but the team will need to break in a bulk reliever or spot starter Monday or Tuesday, while Justin Verlander presumably takes the hill for the other game. Though he owns an unremarkable 4.42 ERA and 1.34 WHIP in 97.2 innings at Triple-A this season, Whisenhunt has scaled back his free passes, with his walk rate dropping from 11.1 percent with Sacramento in 2024 to 6.8 percent in 2025. If he is called up this week, Whisenhunt could stick around with the big club for multiple turns through the rotation.

  • Giants' Carson Seymour: Could work in bulk relief Sunday

Seymour is likely lined up to pitch at least a couple of innings in Sunday's game against the Mets after opening pitcher Matt Gage exits the contest, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Between his 33 appearances at the Triple-A level and the majors this season, Gage has yet to pitch more than 2.2 innings, so he's unlikely to make it through the batting order once in his first career MLB start. San Francisco could call up a pitcher from the minors to provide another fresh arm, but based on how the team's bullpen currently looks, Seymour is the top candidate to cover bulk innings once Gage exits the game. Seymour has tossed six total innings over his three relief appearances in the majors this season but has been a full-time starter with Triple-A Sacramento, pitching to a 3.86 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 90:39 K:BB in 77 innings. The Giants have two openings in the rotation at the moment, so Seymour could make multiple starts or bulk-relief appearances for the big club.

  • Matt McLain 2B | CIN

Reds' Matt McLain: Raps two hits, RBI in win

McLain went 2-for-4 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored in Saturday's 6-2 win over the Rays.

The Reds plated two runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, and McLain had a role in all three rallies. He's hit safely in 10 of 11 games, going 15-for-44 (.341) with three extra-base hits, four RBI, three walks, a stolen base and six runs scored during that stretch. His batting average is up to .220, its highest point since April 3.

  • Shelby Miller RP | CHC

    Diamondbacks' Shelby Miller: Throws bullpen

Miller (forearm) threw a 16-pitch bullpen session Friday, MLB.com reports.

Miller was on a normal progression from the bullpen to live batting practice, but a live BP session July 22 was cut short due to lower-back tightness. There's no word on a next step for Miller, but Tuesday's minor setback likely means he won't be activated until early August.

  • Jalen Beeks RP | TEX

    Diamondbacks' Jalen Beeks: Faces hitters

Beeks (back) threw a 23-pitch live batting practice session Friday, MLB.com reports.

Beeks' live BP session follows two previous bullpen sessions. He's completed the 15-day minimum stay on the injured list and can be activated at any time, although a rehab assignment remains a possibility.
