Kyle Freeland SP | COL
Rockies' Kyle Freeland: Falls to Blue Jays
Freeland (2-12) took the loss Wednesday against Toronto, allowing six runs on seven hits and two walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out four.
After holding Toronto scoreless through his first two innings, Freeland gave up a two-out, three-run blast to Bo Bichette in the third before surrendering three more runs in the fifth. The 32-year-old Freeland has given up seven home runs in his last four starts (19.2 innings). His ERA is up to 5.53 with a 1.52 WHIP and 78:28 K:BB across 21 starts (109 innings) this season. The left-hander will look for better results in his next outing, tentatively lined up for next week in St. Louis.

Andrew Heaney RP | LAD
Pirates' Andrew Heaney: Early hook in no-decision
Heaney did not factor into the decision in Wednesday's 4-2 loss to the Giants, allowing one run on two hits and no walks with four strikeouts over 4.2 innings.
Heaney cruised through four innings before giving up a solo homer in the fifth. The veteran southpaw was lifted at 76 pitches to avoid a third trip through the Giants' lineup, marking the fourth time in his past five starts he's failed to complete five frames. He'll carry a 4.77 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 80:36 K:BB across 115 innings into a road matchup with the Brewers early next week.

Dansby Swanson SS | CHC
Cubs' Dansby Swanson: Goes deep again Wednesday
Swanson went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 6-1 win over the Reds.
Swanson went deep for the second time in the last three days and 18th time this season. The Chicago shortstop is now slashing .245/.294/.414 across 113 games, which is very similar to the .242/.312/.390 line he posted last year. Swanson should continue to play most days up the middle for the Cubs, though both Willi Castro and Nico Hoerner can fill in when the former needs a break down the stretch.

Ian Happ LF | CHC
Cubs' Ian Happ: Goes deep in win
Happ went 1-for-3 with a walk and a solo home run in Wednesday's 6-1 win over the Reds.
Happ extended his hitting streak to five games as he launched his 16th home run of the season in the eighth inning. The veteran outfielder has been batting lower in the order recently and has seen some steady improvement at the plate following a slow start to the season. Happ is now batting .258 over his last 10 games and .230 overall.

Robbie Ray SP | SF
Giants' Robbie Ray: Fans eight in no-decision
Ray did not factor into the decision in Wednesday's 4-2 win over the Pirates, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks with eight strikeouts over six innings.
Ray settled in after allowing four baserunners and a run in the first inning, generating 15 whiffs on 104 pitches while limiting the Pirates to only one extra-base hit. Since giving up five earned runs in his first start after the All-Star break on July 20, the 33-year-old has yielded just five over his past three outings. He'll take a 2.85 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 148:55 K:BB across 142 innings into a home matchup with the Padres early next week.

Seiya Suzuki RF | CHC
Cubs' Seiya Suzuki: Snaps slump with big afternoon
Suzuki went 2-for-2 with a walk, a home run and two RBI in Wednesday's 6-1 win over the Reds.
After getting a breather Tuesday, Suzuki returned for the Wednesday afternoon series finale and promptly mashed his 27th home run of the season, which ties him with Pete Crow-Armstrong for the team lead. Suzuki had been scuffling before Wednesday with just a .143/.284/.214 slash line in 16 games since the All-Star break, but perhaps the day off helped him get back on track.

Kevin Ginkel RP | ARI
Diamondbacks' Kevin Ginkel: Shut down for season
The Diamondbacks transferred Ginkel (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Wednesday.
Ginkel landed on the injured list Monday with a sprained right shoulder, and his move to the 60-day IL will ensure that he remains sidelined for the rest of the season. The 31-year-old will finish 2025 with a 7.36 ERA and 1.62 WHIP over 25.2 innings. Right-hander Casey Kelly was called up from Triple-A Reno to fill the open 40-man roster spot.
-
Kyle Nelson RP | ATL
Diamondbacks' Kyle Nelson: Sent down to Reno
The Diamondbacks optioned Nelson to Triple-A Reno on Wednesday.
After giving up two runs in two-plus innings and collecting his first big-league save following his call-up from Reno last Friday, Nelson will return to the minors to open up a spot in the bullpen for Casey Kelly, who was called up from Triple-A. Nelson owns a 6.08 ERA through 23.2 innings in the minors, though the amount of injuries in Arizona's bullpen keeps the door open for him to return to the big club before the end of the season.
-
Casey Kelly SP | ARI
Diamondbacks' Casey Kelly: Joining big club
The Diamondbacks selected Kelly's contract from Triple-A Reno on Wednesday.
Kelly has spent the entire 2025 campaign at Reno, where he owns a 5.82 ERA and 1.71 WHIP alongside a 42:33 K:BB through 85 innings. Despite his uninspiring numbers, the 35-year-old will join the Arizona bullpen to provide a fresh arm while Kyle Nelson heads down to Triple-A. Kevin Ginkel (shoulder) was moved to the 60-day injured list to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Kelly.

Dennis Santana RP | PIT
Pirates' Dennis Santana: Blows save, takes loss Wednesday
Santana (3-4) took the loss against the Giants on Wednesday, allowing two runs on three hits over 1.1 innings. He did not record a walk or a strikeout.
Santana was charged with a blown save after allowing an inherited runner to score on a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning, then gave up two more runs in the ninth. In three appearances since David Bednar was traded to the Yankees, the 29-year-old Santana has surrendered seven earned runs and taken two losses. Despite the rough patch, he still owns a stellar 2.57 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 39:11 K:BB across 49 innings and should remain the primary option for saves in Pittsburgh.
