  • Owen Caissie RF | MIA

Cubs' Owen Caissie: Collects first MLB hit

Caissie went 1-for-3 with a single in a 7-0 loss to the Brewers in the first game of Monday's doubleheader.

The Cubs only had two hits as a team in the lopsided loss, but one of them was memorable, as it was the first hit at the MLB level for Caissie. The 23-year-old is now 1-for-8 since getting promoted to the majors on Thursday. While the youngster has plenty of talent, he's yet to grab an everyday role in a crowded Chicago outfield, which limits Caissie's fantasy upside for the time being.

  • Pavin Smith RF | ARI

Diamondbacks' Pavin Smith: Reinstated from IL, starting Monday

The Diamondbacks reinstated Smith (oblique) from the 10-day injured list, and he is starting at first base and batting fifth against the Guardians on Monday.

Smith has spent the last six weeks recovering from a right oblique strain that landed him on the 10-day IL in early July. He ended his rehab assignment with Triple-A Reno on a strong note, going 2-for-3 with two walks, two doubles and two runs scored in Saturday's contest. Smith will get the start at first base over Tyler Locklear on Monday, and the former could also work in rotation with Adrian Del Castillo at DH.

  • Austin Riley 3B | ATL

Braves' Austin Riley: Runs bases, still feels sore

Riley ran the bases Sunday but still felt some abdominal discomfort, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports.

He will run again Tuesday, but a timeline for Riley's return to the Atlanta roster remains unclear. Riley has been sidelined for most of this month with a strained lower abdominal muscle. Nacho Alvarez will continue filling in at third base for Atlanta until Riley is ready to return from the injured list.

  • Jose Fermin LF | STL

Cardinals' Jose Fermin: Summoned to big leagues

The Cardinals recalled Fermin from Triple-A Memphis on Monday.

Fermin will provide some infield depth while Nolan Arenado (shoulder) and Brendan Donovan (groin) are shelved. The 26-year-old has hit well in his brief opportunities in the majors this season, going 7-for-20 with a 3:2 K:BB.

  • Cardinals' Brendan Donovan: Lands on IL with groin strain

The Cardinals placed Donovan on the 10-day injured list Monday with a left groin strain.

The Cardinals played a man short over the weekend with the hope that Donovan would be ready to return to the lineup early this week. However, he was ultimately not able to show enough improvement to avoid a stint on the IL. Donovan's IL placement is retroactive to Friday, so he will be eligible for activation Aug. 25. Thomas Saggese should continue to see the bulk of the playing time at second base in Donovan's stead.

  • Connor Norby 1B | MIA

Marlins' Connor Norby: Cleared for rehab games

Norby (wrist) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Jacksonville on Wednesday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

Norby needed surgery in mid-July to address a fractured hamate bone in his left hand, but he's now ready to test out the surgically repaired wrist in a game setting. If all goes well during his rehab assignment, he should rejoin the Marlins' 26-man active roster before the end of August.

  • Ryan Weathers SP | NYY

Marlins' Ryan Weathers: Facing hitters Wednesday

Weathers (lat) will throw a live batting practice session Wednesday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

The left-hander will face hitters for the first time since he was shelved in early June due to a lat strain. If Weathers gets through Wednesday's session without any hiccups, he could be cleared to begin a rehab assignment. Weathers is hoping to return from the 60-day injured list and rejoin the Miami rotation at some point in September.

  • Keaton Winn RP | SF

Giants' Keaton Winn: Sent back to minors

The Giants optioned Winn to Triple-A Sacramento on Monday.

Winn was up with the big club for just a few days while Ryan Walker was on the paternity list, but Winn will head back to Sacramento now that Walker has rejoined the active roster. The 27-year-old Winn made two scoreless relief appearances during his time with the big club.

  • Ryan Walker RP | SF

Giants' Ryan Walker: Back from paternity leave

The Giants activated Walker (personal) from the paternity list Monday.

Walker missed the Giants' weekend series against the Rays as he welcomed a new baby to the family, but he'll rejoin the club ahead of its series opener in San Diego on Monday. He'll fill a setup role out of the San Francisco bullpen.

  • Cade Horton P | CHC

Cubs' Cade Horton: Tending to blister on middle finger

The Cubs announced that Horton was removed in the third inning of his start in the first game of Monday's doubleheader with the Brewers due to a blister on his right middle finger, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Horton was visited on the mound on three occasions during the afternoon before he was lifted from the contest after recording three strikeouts and allowing one earned run on four hits and one walk across 2.2 innings. Though the blister isn't a major health concern for the young hurler, it could jeopardize his availability for his next turn through the rotation, which is expected to come this weekend versus the Angels. If Horton ends up requiring a stint on the injured list, the Cubs could recall Javier Assad from Triple-A Iowa to replace the rookie in the rotation.
