Nationals' Riley Adams: Belts eighth homer

Adams went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run in Friday's 5-4 win over the Phillies.

The catcher gave the Nationals an early lead by taking Taijuan Walker deep in the first inning. Adams has slugged a career-high eight homers this season -- his previous best was five, set in 2022 -- and four of them have come in his last 24 games, a stretch in which he's slashing .289/.365/.487 with 11 RBI and 11 runs. With Keibert Ruiz (concussion) seemingly not close to a return, Adams' surprisingly productive run could continue into September.

  • Cade Cavalli SP | WAS

Nationals' Cade Cavalli: Quality start in no-decision

Cavalli came away with a no-decision in Friday's 5-4 win over the Phillies, giving up three runs on seven hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out four.

It wasn't quite as impressive an effort from Cavalli as in his last trip to the mound, when he fired seven shutout innings, but the right-hander held a dangerous Philly offense mostly in check for a second straight meeting. Cavalli tossed 64 of 95 pitches for strikes in his second career quality start, and over four outings in August he sports a 2.82 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 18:6 K:BB in 22.1 innings. He'll look to keep rolling in his next start, which lines up to come on the road next week against another fearsome foe in the Yankees.

  • Pirates' Andrew McCutchen: Drives in four in rout

McCutchen went 2-for-4 with a walk, two doubles and four RBI in Friday's 9-0 rout of the Rockies.

The 38-year-old got the offensive fireworks started early with two-run doubles in both the first and second innings. The performance snapped a 1-for-22 slump by McCutchen over his prior nine games, and on the season he's slashing .240/.331/.375 with 11 homers, 39 runs and 45 RBI in 109 contests.

  • Tommy Pham LF | NYM

Pirates' Tommy Pham: Pops seventh homer

Pham went 2-for-3 with a walk, a double, a home run, three runs scored and two RBI in Friday's 9-0 win over the Rockies.

The veteran outfielder also reached base on a hit-by-pitch, and Pham took Anthony Molina deep for a two-run shot in the sixth inning after crossing the plate in the first and second frames. Pham is up to seven homers on the season, and three of them have come in his last 16 games, a stretch in which he's slashing .245/.344/.453 with two steals, seven runs and nine RBI.

  • Bubba Chandler SP | PIT

Pirates' Bubba Chandler: Nabs four-inning save in debut

Chandler recorded the save in Friday's 9-0 win over the Rockies, allowing two hits over four scoreless relief innings. He struck out three without walking a batter.

The 22-year-old right-hander had trouble with his control at times in Triple-A Indianapolis this season, but Chandler was dialed in during his big-league debut Friday, firing 29 of 40 pitches for strikes while piggybacking Braxton Ashcraft in a combined shutout. Chandler topped out at 100.4 miles per hour with his four-seam fastball and reached triple digits with his final pitch of the night as well, highlighting his impressive upside. The Pirates could move him into the rotation as some point down the stretch, but Chandler is just as likely to get his feet wet in a bulk-relief role for the rest of 2025 before competing for a starting job next spring.

  • Pirates' Braxton Ashcraft: Dazzles in combined shutout

Ashcraft (4-2) picked up the win in Friday's 9-0 rout of the Rockies, allowing one hit and one walk over five scoreless innings. He struck out six.

Making his third straight start, Ashcraft delivered the best performance of his young career as he combined with fellow rookie Bubba Chandler on the shutout. Ashcraft racked up 14 swinging strikes on only 65 pitches (47 total strikes) as he set a new personal best in Ks, and since moving into the rotation the 25-year-old righty has a 1.35 ERA, 0.67 WHIP and 15:2 K:BB over 13.1 innings. He'll look to keep rolling in his next outing, which is scheduled to come on the road next week in St. Louis.

  • Rockies' Antonio Senzatela: Bounced by Bucs

Senzatela (4-15) took the loss Friday, coughing up five runs on eight hits and three walks over four innings as the Rockies were routed 9-0 by the Pirates. He struck out four.

The right-hander managed to keep the ball in the park, but that's about the only silver lining from this performance. Senzatela tossed 49 of 86 pitches for strikes and generated only 17 called or swinging strikes as he gave up five or more runs for the third time in his last four trips to the mound. His 15 losses lead the majors, and Senzatela will carry a brutal 7.15 ERA, 1.90 WHIP and 61:42 K:BB through 112 innings into his next start, which lines up to come on the road next week in Houston.

  • Nick Lodolo SP | CIN

Reds' Nick Lodolo: Throws three simulated innings

Lodolo (finger) faced hitters in a three-inning simulated game Friday, MLB.com reports.

Pending a follow-up examination, Lodolo could be reinstated from the 15-day injured list and rejoin the Cincinnati rotation to start Wednesday's series finale versus the Dodgers in Los Angeles.

  • Reds' Tyler Stephenson: Being fitted for thumb guard

The Reds are having Stephenson fitted for a thumb guard that will be inserted inside a catcher's mitt, MLB.com reports.

Stephenson sustained a fractured left thumb earlier this month and was placed on the injured list Aug. 20 (retroactive to Aug. 17). That he's being fitted for a guard indicates the club feels Stephenson can still play this season; however, Cincinnati will proceed with caution and let the fracture heal before speculating on a timeframe for his return.

  • Diamondbacks' Lourdes Gurriel: Continues RBI binge

Gurriel went 1-for-4 with two RBI in Friday's 6-5 extra-innings win over the Reds.

Gurriel produced the Diamondbacks' first run with a first-inning sacrifice fly and then ended matters in the 11th with a run-scoring single. He's hit safely in eight consecutive contests, with three home runs. He has 14 RBI during the hit streak and 25 over 20 August contests.
