Matt Vierling CF | DET
Tigers' Matt Vierling: In Friday's lineup
Vierling (back) will start in right field and bat seventh Friday against the Giants, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
Lower-back spasms forced Vierling to make an early exit from Thursday's game, but the issue seems to have subsided ahead of Friday's contest. The 27-year-old has begun to heat up at the plate, going 8-for-27 (.296) with two RBI since the beginning of August.

Twins' Ryan Jeffers: Taking seat for nightcap
Jeffers is out of the lineup for the second game of a doubleheader against the Guardians on Friday.

Byron Buxton CF | MIN

Buxton is out of the lineup for the second game of Friday's doubleheader against the Guardians.
After missing three games due to back stiffness, Buxton returned for Friday's matinee, going 1-for-3 with a double and a walk during the Twins' 4-2 victory. Minnesota won't push it with the 30-year-old, instead starting Manuel Margot in center field for the nightcap.

Beau Brieske RP | DET
Tigers' Beau Brieske: Opening Friday vs. Giants
Brieske will serve as the Tigers' opener for Friday's contest against the Giants, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
Brieske will technically be making his third start of the season Friday. He got roughed up in his last assignment as an opener against the Guardians on July 29, taking the loss while allowing three runs on five hits and striking out one batter across 0.2 frames. Both Brant Hurter and Kenta Maeda are options to serve in bulk relief once Brieske is done for the evening.

Schneemann is out of the lineup for the second game of a doubleheader Friday against the Twins
Schneemann started at third base and hit second during the matinee, going 0-for-3 with a walk during the contest. However, Jose Ramirez will slide over to third base while Brayan Rocchio plays shortstop in the nightcap.

Alex Cobb SP | DET
Guardians' Alex Cobb: Activated ahead of start
Cobb (hip/shoulder/finger) was reinstated from the 60-day injured list ahead of his start in the second game of Friday's doubleheader versus Minnesota.
Cobb has been on the shelf all season while recovering from a left hip procedure he underwent in the offseason as well as various other injuries he suffered during rehab. He's now set to make his season debut for the Guardians after being traded from San Francisco ahead of the trade deadline. The 36-year-old righty posted a 3.52 ERA and 1.26 WHIP while striking out 29 batters across 23 innings during his rehab assignment, and he was able to throw 69 pitches (4.2 innings) during his most recent minor-league outing. Anthony Gose was designated for assignment in a corresponding move.

Guardians' Joey Cantillo: Falls to Twins
Cantillo (0-2) took the loss in the opening game of Friday's doubleheader with the Twins, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks over 5.2 innings. He struck out two.
Cantillo allowed a run in the first inning before Minnesota added solo homers in the second and fourth. The 24-year-old has allowed three runs in each of his three starts in the majors this year, posting a 6.23 ERA with a 1.62 WHIP and nine strikeouts over 13 innings. Mike Trout CF | LAA
Angels' Mike Trout: Surgery successful
Trout underwent successful surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee Wednesday, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.
Trout only managed one at-bat during his rehab assignment before suffering what we now know is a torn left meniscus. The injury officially ended his 2024 season, but following Wednesday's successful surgery it seems as though the 32-year-old will be recovered in time for the start of the 2025 campaign. In the 29 games Trout played this year, he slashed .220/.325/.541 with 10 homers, 17 runs, 14 RBI and six stolen bases.

John Schreiber RP | NYY
Royals' John Schreiber: Completes another bullpen
Schreiber (knee) threw a bullpen session Thursday and is scheduled to throw off a mound again Sunday, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.
Schreiber has been progressing well from a right knee patella tendon injury he sustained in late July. While he's feeling good from a pitching standpoint, he'll need to do more fielding work before the next step in his rehab is determined. Prior to the injury, Schreiber tallied a 4.14 ERA across 37.0 innings out of the bullpen.
