Rays' Jose Siri: Swats clutch home run

Siri went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer in Tuesday's win over the Mariners.

Siri and the rest of the Mariners' bats were held scoreless by starter Logan Gilbert for six innings but immediately took advantage once Gilbert was out of the game. Siri launched a two-out, two-run homer off JT Chargois in the seventh to put the Rays ahead 2-1, Siri's third home run over his last five games. He's endured a tough month overall, slashing just .182/.237/.364 with a 45.8 percent strikeout rate. His struggles at the dish have persisted throughout the year, as he's slashing .195/.265/.385 with 17 homers, 43 RBI, 43 runs, 12 steals and a 28:142 BB:K in 383 plate appearances.

  • Yandy Diaz DH | TB

Rays' Yandy Diaz: Goes deep Tuesday

Diaz went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's win over the Mariners.

Diaz supplied the Rays with some insurance in the eighth, hitting a solo home run to put them ahead 3-1 in a game that wound up finishing 3-2. The home run was only his second since Aug. 3, but he's still been hitting the ball. Since Aug. 17, Diaz is slashing .351/.390/.514 with four extra-base hits, five RBI and two runs while striking out just under 10 percent of the time. His power numbers have dipped significantly since last season, but he's been able to display his usual contact ability. • Logan Gilbert SP | SEA

Mariners' Logan Gilbert: Bullpen spoils strong start

Gilbert tossed six scoreless innings while allowing just four hits and striking out 10 without a walk in Tuesday's loss to the Rays. He did not factor into the decision.

Gilbert dominated the Rays, posting his second scoreless start this month and seventh of the season. It was also his first time this year with double-digit strikeouts. Gilbert's night was over after 97 pitches and his strong effort was spoiled the very next inning after JT Chargois gave up a two-run blast to Jose Siri. Gilbert owns an impressive 3.09 ERA, 0.90 ERA and 172:31 K:BB in 171.2 innings and lines up to face the Athletics on Monday as part of a projected two-start week.

Carpenter gave the Tigers the lead on an RBI single in the fourth inning and then crushed a 425-foot home run in the sixth. In 12 games since returning from the injured list, the 26-year-old has gone deep five times and driven in 11 runs. • Joey Cantillo SP | CLE

    Guardians' Joey Cantillo: Sent down

Cantillo was optioned to Triple-A Columbus on Tuesday.

Cantillo's demotion was expected after he served as the 27th man in Monday's doubleheader versus the Royals. He's pitched to a 7.71 ERA over 18.2 innings in the majors this year. With an off day Thursday, the Guardians may be able to get by with a four-man rotation until Alex Cobb (fingernail) is ready to return, which means Cantillo could be staying at Triple-A for a while.

  • Tigers' Mason Englert: Opening Wednesday

Englert will serve as the Tigers' opening pitcher for Wednesday's game against the Angels, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.

Englert was recalled from Triple-A Toledo on Monday, and Wednesday will mark his first time pitching in the majors since June 24. The 24-year-old righty owns a 5.95 ERA and 1.32 WHIP through 19.2 innings with Detroit on the season, although he's allowed five runs (four earned) over 13.2 frames in Triple-A since his last MLB outing. Kenta Maeda is expected to work in bulk relief once Englert is taken out of the game.
