  • Padres' Will Wagner: Handling strong-side platoon role

Wagner is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Orioles. With the Orioles sending southpaw Trevor Rogers to the hill for the series finale, Wagner will give way to Nick Solak at designated hitter. Wagner had started the last four games against righties, going 4-for-8 with a double and four walks. The 27-year-old could have a fairly clear path to a strong-side platoon role until the Padres get Miguel Andujar (hamstring) back from the injured list.

  • Padres' Will Wagner: Summoned from minors

The Padres recalled Wagner from Triple-A El Paso on Tuesday. He will take the roster spot vacated by Xander Bogaerts and might be around only while Bogaerts is on paternity leave. Wagner has put up a .762 OPS with three home runs and a 21:19 BB:K over 30 games this season for El Paso.

  • Padres' Will Wagner: In midst of rehab stint

Wagner (oblique) began a minor-league rehab stint with Triple-A El Paso on Friday and went 1-for-2 with a walk and a run in his first game. Wagner landed on the injured list in late March due to a strained right oblique that caused him to miss most of the Padres' spring slate. It's unclear how long he'll be with El Paso, but given that he appeared in only five Cactus League contests and that San Diego doesn't have an immediate obvious opening on its roster, Wagner may be given plenty of time to ramp back up.

  • Padres' Will Wagner: Playing in extended spring games

Wagner (oblique) has been participating in extended spring-training games at the Padres' complex in Arizona, per MLB.com. Wagner suffered a strained right oblique in early March after appearing in just five Cactus League contests. He seems to be showing improvement but hasn't yet set out on a rehab assignment. It's unclear if there will be room for Wagner on the big-league roster when he's back to full health.

  • Padres' Will Wagner: Out with strained oblique

Wagner is dealing with an oblique strain and hasn't done any baseball activity since the beginning of March, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Per Acee, Wagner will "almost certainly" start the season on the injured list. The infielder had been slated to battle for a reserve role during spring training, but he got into only five games before getting hurt, going 0-for-9 with two walks and two strikeouts. Even if Wagner was healthy, his likelihood of making the Opening Day roster had been considered slim.

  • Padres' Will Wagner: Rejoins Padres

The Padres recalled Wagner from the Arizona Complex League on Saturday. Wagner was sent to the Padres' facility in Arizona following Xander Bogaerts' return from the injured list Tuesday, but the former will now be brought back onto the big-league roster to replace Ramon Laureano (finger). Wagner has slashed .222/.319/.278 across 145 plate appearances between the Blue Jays and Padres this season and will likely come off the bench most days while in San Diego.

  • Padres' Will Wagner: Recalled as Merrill replacement

The Padres recalled Wagner from Triple-A El Paso on Sunday. Acquired from the Blue Jays on July 31, Wagner was subsequently optioned to El Paso, where he slashed .270/.333/.405 with two home runs and one stolen base in 17 games. He's been recalled from Triple-A to replace Jackson Merrill (ankle) on the active roster, though Gavin Sheets is the likelier candidate to benefit from regular playing time while Merrill is on the shelf. Wagner, meanwhile, will bolster the Padres' infield depth but likely won't be in store for steady starts.

  • Padres' Will Wagner: Optioned to minors

Wagner was optioned to Triple-A El Paso on Thursday. Wagner was dealt from the Blue Jays to the Padres on Thursday but is currently blocked by both Ryan O'Hearn and Gavin Sheets. That leaves him without a spot in the big leagues, though that could change prior to the close of the regular season. Across 132 plate appearances with Toronto, Wagner hit .237/.336/.298 with a 15:26 BB:K.

  • Giants' Will Wagner: Heading to San Diego

Wagner was traded from the Blue Jays to the Padres on Thursday in exchange for Brandon Valenzuela. Wagner's role in San Diego is to be determined, as the Padres also acquired Ryan O'Hearn and already have Gavin Sheets in terms of lefty-hitting corner bats. Wagner slashed .237/.336/.298 with zero home runs and one steal in 132 plate appearances in the majors this season.

  • Blue Jays' Will Wagner: Returns from restricted list

The Blue Jays reinstated Wagner from the restricted list Monday. Wagner was away from the club for the previous two days so that he could attend his father's Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Cooperstown. He will start at third base and bat ninth in Monday's game versus the Orioles.

  • Blue Jays' Will Wagner: Placed on restricted list

  • Blue Jays' Will Wagner: On bench for second straight

Wagner is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Yankees. The Blue Jays are facing off against a lefty starter (Carlos Rodon) for the second straight game, so the left-handed-hitting Wagner will remain on the bench. Leo Jimenez will get another start at second base while Ernie Clement shifts over to third base.

  • Blue Jays' Will Wagner: Sitting after four straight starts

Wagner is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Angels. With southpaw Tyler Anderson on the hill for the Angels, Wagner will hit the bench Sunday. The 26-year-old utility player has a clear path to playing time against right-handed pitching through the All-Star break, and Wagner had started five of the past six games. Andres Gimenez (ankle) landing on the injured list Sunday will create even more opportunities on the infield, although Davis Schneider and Leo Jimenez will also be in the mix at the keystone.

  • Blue Jays' Will Wagner: Recalled by Toronto

The Blue Jays recalled Wagner from Triple-A Buffalo on Saturday. Wagner made Toronto's Opening Day roster but was optioned to Triple-A in late April after Daulton Varsho (hamstring) returned from the 10-day injured list. Wagner spent nearly a month on Buffalo's 7-day IL due to a foot injury but has gone 11-for-41 (.268) with one steal, four doubles, one home run and six RBI since being reinstated from the IL in mid-June. The Blue Jays optioned Alan Roden to Buffalo in a corresponding move.

  • Blue Jays' Will Wagner: Makes return to Triple-A lineup

Wagner (foot) went 3-for-10 with three doubles, one RBI and one run in two games for Triple-A Buffalo since being reinstated from the 7-day injured list Friday. Before rejoining Buffalo over weekend, Wagner hadn't played for the Blue Jays' top affiliate since May 10 after fouling a ball off of his foot. The 26-year-old infielder was productive in his return to the Buffalo lineup and should continue to handle an everyday role at Triple-A with the hope of performing well enough to earn another look in the big leagues.

  • Blue Jays' Will Wagner: Out at Triple-A with sore foot

Blue Jays manager John Schneider said Thursday that Wagner has been sidelined recently at Triple-A Buffalo after fouling a ball off his foot, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca reports. Wagner hasn't played since Saturday but is expected back in action soon, per Schneider. The infielder is 8-for-30 with two home run in eight games with Buffalo since being optioned there in late April.

  • Blue Jays' Will Wagner: Optioned to Triple-A

The Blue Jays optioned Wagner to Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday. Wagner had seen his playing time dip recently, and he will lose his roster spot upon Daulton Varsho's (shoulder) return from the injured list. With Wagner out of the way, Ernie Clement should have a stronger grip on the third-base job.

  • Blue Jays' Will Wagner: Sitting against righty again

Wagner is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against Atlanta. The lefty-hitting Wagner is off to a 3-for-28 start to the plate in April, and the ongoing slump has started to cost him some playing time. He'll be on the bench for the second time in the Blue Jays' last three matchups versus right-handers, with Ernie Clement getting the nod at third base as Atlanta sends Spencer Strider to the mound.

  • Blue Jays' Will Wagner: Absent from lineup

Wagner is out of the lineup for Monday's game versus Atlanta. It's the first time this season that Wagner is not in the lineup against a right-handed pitcher. Ernie Clement will handle third base and bat fifth versus Atlanta hurler Grant Holmes.

  • Blue Jays' Will Wagner: Knee scope on tap

Wagner will have his left knee scoped Thursday and is expected to be sidelined from baseball activities for about a month, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports. The 26-year-old was placed on the 60-day injured list Tuesday due to knee inflammation, and he'll undergo the procedure to address the issue. Wagner should have enough recovery time to be healthy for the start of spring training. He played well in his first taste of the majors this year and had a .305/.337/.451 slash line with two homers and 11 RBI in 24 games.
