  • Lucas Erceg RP | KC

    Royals' Lucas Erceg: Deemed day-to-day

Erceg is dealing with soreness and swelling in his pitching hand, but the issue isn't viewed as serious, Joel Goldberg of Bally Sports Kansas City reports.

Erceg injured his hand trying to field a comebacker Thursday against the Astros and was removed from the contest, but he's considered just day-to-day. While he's sidelined, save opportunities could open up for James McArthur, Sam Long or John Schreiber.

  • Blue Jays' George Springer: Sitting down Friday

Springer isn't in Toronto's lineup for Friday's game versus the Twins.

After going 2-for-14 with a homer and three RBI during the Blue Jays' four-game series against Boston, Springer will take a seat for Friday's series opener in Minneapolis. Addison Barger will patrol right field while Springer rests, moving Ernie Clement to third base and opening up shortstop for Leo Jimenez.

  • Trevor Story SS | BOS

Red Sox's Trevor Story: Beginning rehab assignment Sunday

Story (shoulder) will begin his rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester on Sunday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.

Story will begin his assignment as the designated hitter before playing anywhere on the infield. The 31-year-old dislocated his left shoulder just eight games into the regular season, and the procedure to repair the injury was thought to be season-ending. However, Story has been ramping up his activity level following the All-Star break, and he will take the next step in his recovery Sunday. He will need several rehab games before being reinstated from the 60-day injured list, but a return to the majors before the end of the season is not off the table.

  • Orioles' Cedric Mullins: On bench against southpaw

Mullins is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Rockies.

Mullins will yield to Colton Cowser in center field Friday as Colorado trots out left-hander Austin Gomber. Mullins is hitless in his last 13 at-bats but has scored twice and stolen a base during that stretch.

  • Joey Loperfido LF | HOU

Blue Jays' Joey Loperfido: Resting Friday

Loperfido isn't in the Blue Jays' lineup Friday against the Twins.

Per Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca, Loperfido is getting the night off to rest after colliding with the wall during Thursday's game against Boston, but he also went 1-for-15 with five strikeouts during the series against the Red Sox. In his place, Nathan Lukes will make his first start of the year in left field and bat eighth.

  • Orioles' Adley Rutschman: Resting Friday

Rutschman is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Rockies.

Rutschman had started each of the Orioles' last eight games (six at catcher, two at DH) but will get the night off Friday. James McCann will fill in behind the dish while Eloy Jimenez handles DH.

  • Ryan O'Hearn 1B | PIT

Orioles' Ryan O'Hearn: Idle against LHP

O'Hearn is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Rockies.

O'Hearn will avoid a same-hand matchup with Austin Gomber on Friday. In place of O'Hearn, Emmanuel Rivera will play first base and Eloy Jimenez will DH.

  • Astros' Jon Singleton: On bench Friday

Singleton is out of the lineup for Friday's game against Kansas City.

Even with right-hander Seth Lugo starting for the Royals, the lefty-hitting Singleton will take a seat. Victor Caratini will fill in at first base and is batting cleanup.

  • Alex Bregman 3B | CHC

Astros' Alex Bregman: Dealing with elbow soreness

Manager Joe Espada said that Bregman was not included in Friday's lineup against Kansas City due to elbow soreness, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.

Bregman missed five games in August due to swelling in his right elbow, though he had started each of the Astros' prior nine games before Friday. It's unclear if the third baseman will be available off the bench for the contest. Over the nine games since his return, Bregman has gone 9-for-36 with two solo home runs.

  • Steward Berroa CF | PHI

Blue Jays' Steward Berroa: Optioned to Buffalo

Toronto optioned Berroa to Triple-A Buffalo on Friday.

The move makes room on the Blue Jays' 26-man roster for outfielder Nathan Lukes. Berroa has seen inconsistent playing time since being recalled from Buffalo on July 3. Since that promotion, he's gone 5-for-33 with seven runs scored, five stolen bases, one RBI and a 31.7 percent strikeout rate. Berroa will go back to an everyday role in Buffalo.
