Blue Jays' Dylan Cease: Dominates Yankees for eighth win

Cease (8-5) picked up the win Saturday, allowing one run on two hits and five walks over 6.2 innings in a 4-3 victory over the Yankees. He struck out eight.

The right-hander struggled to find the strike zone at times, but New York hitters couldn't do much when he did get the ball over the plate -- Cease took a no-hit bid into the seventh inning, only to have it broken up by a Jazz Chisholm single. Cease leads the American League in strikeouts on the season with 209, and his ERA (2.37) is second only to Cam Schlittler's 2.16, as the duo gets ready to duke it out for the Cy Young Award over the final weeks. Cease lines up to make his next start at home next weekend against the Mariners.

  • Mariners' Brendan Donovan: Late scratch Saturday

Donovan (undisclosed) was a late scratch for Saturday's game against the Cubs, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.

The Mariners waited until the very last moment to make a lineup change, and the nature and severity of Donovan's unspecified injury is unclear. Weston Wilson is in at third base in Donovan's absence.

  • Davis Martin SP | CHW

White Sox's Davis Martin: Throws another bullpen

Martin (finger) threw two simulated innings in a 35-pitch bullpen session Saturday, Bruce Levine of 670TheScore.com reports.

Martin has been on the injured list since last weekend with a finger blister, and manager Will Venable said that the right-hander may need just one more side session before heading out on a rehab assignment. Assuming he doesn't suffer any setbacks, Martin could be cleared to return from the IL around the time he's eligible Aug. 30.

  • Eduardo Rivera SP | BOS

Red Sox's Eduardo Rivera: Off restricted list, battling injury

The Red Sox reinstated Rivera (personal) from the restricted list Saturday, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.

Rivera went on the restricted list Monday to deal with a personal matter, and although he is no longer on the restricted list, he remains inactive at Triple-A Worcester due to an undisclosed injury.

  • Max Schuemann LF | NYY

Yankees' Max Schuemann: Back in minors

The Yankees optioned Schuemann to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after Saturday's game against Toronto.

Schuemann was brought up from Triple-A on Friday to make up for the loss of Ryan McMahon (thumb) but will now head back to the minors in preparation for Cody Bellinger's (hamstring) return from the IL on Sunday. Schuemann has slashed .194/.333/.361 across 87 plate appearances in the big leagues this season and will likely spend most of what's left of the year with the RailRiders.

  • Wade Meckler LF | LAA

Angels' Wade Meckler: Moves to concussion IL

The Angels placed Meckler on the 7-day concussion IL, retroactive to Aug. 21, on Saturday.

Meckler was hit on the head by a pitch Thursday and didn't play Friday. He's been diagnosed with a concussion and will have to clear MLB's concussion protocol before being able to return to action. The Angels recalled Christian Moore and Gustavo Campero from Triple-A Salt Lake to provide outfield/infield depth with both Meckler and Nolan Schanuel (side, 10-day IL) sidelined for at least the short term.

  • Nolan Schanuel 1B | LAA

Angels' Nolan Schanuel: Lands on injured list

The Angels placed Schanuel on the 10-day IL, retroactive to Aug. 21, due to a right intercostal muscle strain Saturday.

Schanuel existed Thursday's game against Houston due to side soreness and didn't play Friday. He's since been diagnosed with an intercostal muscle strain and will be sidelined for at least 10 days. The Angels recalled both Christian Moore and Gustavo Campero from Triple-A Salt Lake while also placing outfielder Wade Meckler on the 7-day concussion IL in corresponding moves. With Schanuel sidelined, Vaughn Grissom is logging a second straight start at first base Saturday and could see steady work at that position for the time being.

  • Angels' Gustavo Campero: Called up for first time this season

The Angels recalled Campero from Triple-A Salt Lake on Saturday.

Campero began the season in the minors and missed over a month of action due to a fractured right hand. He return to the field in late July and is now getting a look with the big-league club after Wade Meckler landed on the 7-day concussion IL. Campero has thrived across three major-league levels this season, slashing .313/.389/.914 with 13 homers, 54 RBI and 12 steals over 69 contests, though he mostly struggled during his time with the big-league club last year, posting a .618 OPS with three home runs, eight RBI and four stolen bases across 66 plate appearances. Campero is starting in left field and batting sixth against Texas on Saturday, per Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register.

  • Angels' Christian Moore: Back in big leagues

The Angels recalled Moore from Triple-A Salt Lake on Saturday.

Outfielder Gustavo Campero was also recalled from Salt Lake, while Nolan Schanuel (side) was placed on the 10-day IL and Wade Meckler landed on the 7-day concussion IL. This will be Moore's second big-league stint this season; in his first call-up during the second half of June, he slashed .200/.227/.200 with a 1:11 BB:K over 22 plate appearances. Moore played mostly in left field at that time, but he's starting at second base and batting eighth Saturday, per Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register.
