  • Aaron Nola SP | PHI

Phillies' Aaron Nola: Beats Reds for first win

Nola (1-0) allowed one run on three hits and three walks while striking out six over eight innings in a win over the Reds on Tuesday.

He issued two walks to Billy Hamilton of all people but pounded the strike zone most of the night and had the curveball working. Manager Gabe Kapler let him go in this one, leaving Nola out to throw 103 pitches (70 strikes) after limiting him to 68 and 87 pitches in his first two starts. His 13:8 K:BB through 18.1 innings this season doesn't look all that great, but the 24-year-old has been tough to square up (.161 BAA) and it seems the reins are off. Nola looks like a top-15 starter rest of season, with upside.

  • Johnny Cueto SP | LAA

Giants' Johnny Cueto: Heads to disabled list with ankle sprain

Cueto (ankle) was placed on the 10-day disabled list Tuesday retroactive to April 7, Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

It was reported earlier Tuesday that Cueto was unlikely to make his scheduled start Wednesday due to an ankle injury suffered over the weekend, and now the team has made it official by placing him on the disabled list. Cueto's injury isn't believed to be serious, so he may not require much time beyond the minimum on the disabled list before returning. Left-handed prospect Andrew Suarez is the likely candidate to take Cueto's spot on the mound Wednesday, but an official roster move for Suarez won't be made until after Tuesday. Cueto is eligible to return on April 17 when the Giants are in Arizona.

Giants' Johnny Cueto: Unlikely to start Wednesday

Cueto injured his ankle during a workout over the weekend and isn't expected to pitch Wednesday against the Diamondbacks, Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

The team hasn't determined if Cueto's injury will require a stint on the disabled list, but more information should be available after he goes through a workout with one of the Giants' trainers. Regardless of whether or not Cueto lands on the DL, he isn't expected to make his scheduled start Wednesday. In his place, the Giants will likely send Andrew Suarez to the mound.

  • Hunter Greene SP | CIN

Reds' Hunter Greene: Strikes out eight in debut

Greene went three innings in his debut with Low-A Dayton, striking out eight batters while allowing two runs, MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo reports.

Greene was able to light up the radar in all three innings, reaching 100 mph in each inning while working in the 96-100 mph range. He was able to record a number of strikeouts with a slider that was clocked between 85-89 mph.

  • Mets' Noah Syndergaard: Battled blister but not concerned

Syndergaard dealt with a blister during Monday's start, but said the issue was "irrelevant," Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

Syndergaard claimed to be more worried about his hair flipping into his eyes. He was able to throw six innings with five strikeouts and just one earned run despite the blister. Blisters can last a long time for pitchers and have a significant impact -- Rich Hill, Aaron Sanchez and Johnny Cueto all battled blisters last year and either missed time or saw their performance suffer. Given Syndergaard's lack of concern about this particular blister, it would be wrong to get too worried right away, but if reports of more blisters pop up over his next few starts, there's a chance his numbers could suffer.

  • Reds' Brandon Finnegan: Shows erratic control in rehab start

Finnegan (biceps) covered five innings during a rehab start Monday for Triple-A Louisville, giving up four runs (three earned) on eight hits and five walks in a 7-1 loss to Columbus. He struck out two batters in the outing.

Finnegan threw only 53 of his 98 pitches for strikes, displaying the spotty control that has been a hallmark during his time in the big leagues. The high pitch count suggests that Finnegan is likely ready to handle a starter's workload for the Reds, though the poor outing may prompt the team to delay his activation from the 10-day disabled list. If Finnegan isn't brought off the DL when the Reds require a fifth starter Friday against the Cardinals, Cody Reed would likely remain in the rotation for one more turn.

  • Miles Mikolas RP | WAS

Cardinals' Miles Mikolas: Allows four earned runs in no-decision

Mikolas didn't factor into the decision in a 5-4 extra-inning loss to the Brewers on Monday, allowing four earned runs on eight hits over 6.1 innings while striking out five.

Mikolas was able to avoid the long ball altogether after giving up three home runs in his first start, but he was singled and doubled into submission by the likes of Domingo Santana, Orlando Arcia and Manny Pina. The veteran right-hander has had a bit of a rocky start to the regular season, allowing four earned runs apiece in each of his first two outings, both of which have come against the Brewers. It's worth noting he had a similarly uneven kickoff to his spring training before turning in scoreless efforts in three of his last four exhibition appearances. Mikolas will look to notch his second win of the season when he takes on the Reds in a projected Saturday start.

  • Joe Musgrove SP | SD

    Pirates' Joe Musgrove: Resumes throwing

Musgrove (shoulder) is throwing off a slope and playing catch from 80 feet, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic Pittsburgh reports.

Musgrove battled shoulder discomfort throughout camp and was shut down from throwing soon after the start of the season. He's still a ways away from returning, but he's at least been able to resume his throwing program. It's unclear exactly when he's expected back, but he'll need at least a few long bullpen sessions and some rehab appearances before he's ready to go.

  • Ben Lively SP | CLE

Phillies' Ben Lively: Gives up five against Reds

Lively allowed five runs on nine hits -- including a homer -- and two walks while striking out seven in 5.2 innings against the Reds on Monday. He did not factor into the decision.

While the right-hander has been missing more bats early on this season -- he has 12 strikeouts in 11.1 innings after posting a 5.3 K/9 last year -- it hasn't made a difference with the results so far. Lively has a 5.56 ERA, 1.59 WHIP and .319 BAA through two starts. Even against a Rays team that is currently tied for 12th in the AL in runs scored (in Tampa Bay), Lively will be a tough player to justify starting Sunday.

  • Johnny Cueto SP | LAA

Giants' Johnny Cueto: Moved back to Wednesday

Cueto is scheduled to start Wednesday's game against the Diamondbacks after previously being listed as the starter for the second game in the series Tuesday, Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Manager Bruce Bochy announced the change in the Giants' pitching schedule following Monday's 2-1 loss in the series opener, with the decision based mainly on outlining the team's rotation for the next 10 days rather than out of any concern about Cueto's health after the right-hander tweaked his ankle in his previous outing. Tyler Beede was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento and will take the hill Tuesday, denying Cueto a two-start week since the latter will now miss out on a turn Sunday in San Diego.
