Mets' Jacob deGrom: Exits with hyperextended elbow

DeGrom was removed from Wednesday's game against the Braves with a hyperextended right elbow, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

DeGrom exited the game and was seen heading to the locker room with a trainer after tossing four scoreless innings. According to James Wagner of The New York Times, manager Mickey Callaway said deGrom suffered the injury while hitting in the third inning, and that it initially didn't bother him when pitching, which is why the team allowed him to go back out for the fourth. While the severity of the issue remains unclear, the 29-year-old seems likely to miss some time. Tim Britton of The Athletic New York reports that J.J. Putz missed about five weeks with a hyperextended throwing elbow back in 2008. An extended absence for deGrom would be a tough blow to the Mets and fantasy owners alike, as he's been lights out to start the season, compiling a 2.06 ERA and 48:11 K:BB through his first six starts (39.1 innings). He'll undergo further testing in the coming days.

  • Cardinals' Carlos Martinez: Allows just one in win

Martinez (3-1) earned the win Wednesday, allowing one run on five hits and two walks while striking out five over 7.1 innings against the White Sox.

Martinez helped out his own cause at the plate as well, breaking a scoreless tie in the sixth inning with a solo home run. On the hill, the 26-year-old just keeps rolling and has now allowed either one or zero runs in six straight starts while going at least six innings in all of those. His strikeout rate has dipped a bit the last two starts, but even still Martinez sports a 9.0 K/9 in the early going. He'll carry a terrific 1.40 ERA into his next start Monday against the Twins.

Mets' Jacob deGrom: Lifted prematurely Wednesday

DeGrom was prematurely lifted from Wednesday's game against the Braves, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

DeGrom had tossed four shutout innings prior to heading into the clubhouse with a trainer, so something appears to be up with the 29-year-old. Consider him day-to-day for now. Paul Sewald enter the game in his place.

  • Joe Musgrove SP | SD

Pirates' Joe Musgrove: Next rehab start set for Sunday

Musgrove (shoulder) will make his next rehab start Sunday with Double-A Altoona, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic Pittsburgh reports.

Musgrove got through his first rehab appearance Tuesday without issue, tossing 36 pitches in the game and 15 additional offerings in a bullpen session. He still seems to be a few starts away from a full return to the Pittsburgh rotation, but the progress is encouraging nonetheless.

  • Cardinals' Adam Wainwright: Completes bullpen session

Wainwright (elbow) said Wednesday's bullpen session went very well, Jim Hayes of FOX Sports Midwest reports.

Despite the encouraging news, there's been no indication as to how close he is to returning. For what it's worth, Wainwright said that he feels like he's ready to go, so he could be back relatively soon if the team agrees with his personal assessment.

  • Dodgers' Ross Stripling: Likely headed back to bullpen

Stripling is expected to work out of the bullpen when he's next available over the weekend against the Padres in Monterrey, Mexico, Ken Gurnick of MLB.com reports.

With Rich Hill (finger) missing a third consecutive turn through the rotation, Stripling made his first start of the season Monday against the Diamondbacks in what was essentially a bullpen game. Stripling needed 66 pitches to get through four innings in that contest, giving up four runs on eight hits and one walk to take the loss. Hill has apparently progressed well over the past few days and is slated to come off the 10-day disabled list to take the hill Sunday, so Stripling will transition back to the long-relief role he has filled successfully for much of the season.

  • Alex Wood RP | ATH

Dodgers' Alex Wood: May start Thursday in Arizona

Contrary to previous reports, Wood's next start could come Thursday against the Diamondbacks in Arizona rather than Friday or Saturday against the Padres in Monterrey, Mexico, MLB.com reports.

There has been plenty of confusion regarding when Wood's next starting assignment will come, as Dodgers manager Dave Roberts seemed to suggest Tuesday that the lefty would take the mound over the weekend in Mexico, according to J.P. Hoornstra of the Los Angeles Daily News. It sounds like Roberts may have misspoken, however, as Wood is still listed as the Dodgers' probable starter for Thursday, and Ken Gurnick of MLB.com relayed another comment from Roberts implying that Kenta Maeda, Walker Buehler and Rich Hill (finger) were each in line to start a game against the Padres. The tea leaves thus seem to pointing toward Wood starting the series finale in Arizona, though both Wood's and Maeda's fantasy owners should check back on the Dodgers' rotation plans prior to Thursday's game just to gain clarity on the matter.

  • Kenta Maeda SP | NYY

Dodgers' Kenta Maeda: Expected to start in Mexico

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts relayed Tuesday that Maeda will likely receive his next start Friday or Saturday against the Padres in Monterrey, Mexico, Ken Gurnick of MLB.com reports.

According to J.P. Hoornstra of the Los Angeles Daily News, Roberts initially suggested that Alex Wood and Walker Buehler would likely start the first two games of the series in Mexico in some order, but it appears the Dodgers skipper may have misspoken. Instead, Wood will apparently be kept in his normal spot in the pitching schedule and take the hill Thursday in Arizona, per MLB.com, leaving Maeda to slot into the rotation over the weekend. An outing against the 11-20 Padres should be a more favorable one for Maeda than a matchup with the division-leading Diamondbacks, though the prospect of pitching in an unfamiliar environment may make him a more risky fantasy option than he would be at Dodger Stadium or Petco Park.

  • Johnny Cueto SP | LAA

Giants' Johnny Cueto: Set to see Dr. James Andrews

Cueto will get a second and third opinion on his elbow, one of which will likely come from Dr. James Andrews, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic Bay Area reports.

Dr. Andrews is practically synonymous with "Tommy John surgery," so this looks rather worrisome. Cueto's initial diagnosis was elbow inflammation. As Baggarly reports, all options are on the table. The exact nature of Cueto's injury should become more clear after he receives those additional opinions.

  • Mike Soroka SP | ARI

Braves' Mike Soroka: Second start Sunday?

The Braves have not announced when and where Soroka's next start will be, but he may have earned another turn Sunday at home against the Giants, David O'Brien of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

As O'Brien says, Soroka was so sharp and poised in his big-league debut Tuesday that it might be difficult to send him back to Triple-A without at least giving the home fans a chance to see him make a start this weekend in Atlanta. It makes sense on paper, as the Braves' other potential option for the opening in the rotation this weekend would be Anibal Sanchez, who is on the disabled list with a hamstring injury. Even if Sanchez is ready to come off the DL and start one of this weekend's games, it's hard to make the case that he is a significant upgrade over the 20-year-old phenom. One of the many things that makes Soroka unique is that he won't need his innings monitored carefully this season, as he was able to throw 143 and 153.2 innings in 2016 and 2017, respectively. It may be in everyone's best interest (other than Sanchez) if Soroka is given the chance to stick in the big-league rotation over the rest of the season. He should be rostered in even shallower mixed leagues, as the vast majority, and possibly all of his remaining 2018 innings, could come in the majors.
