  • Cal Quantrill RP | TEX

Padres' Cal Quantrill: Slated for spot start Sunday

The Padres will recall Quantrill from Triple-A El Paso to start Sunday's game against the Pirates.

With the Padres eager to build in extra rest days for Chris Paddack and Matt Strahm, Quantrill will move back up to the big club to give San Diego a temporary six-man rotation. Since the Padres will have off days both of the next two Thursdays, it's likely that Quantrill will return to the minors immediately following the outing against Pittsburgh. Over his previous two starts in the majors, Quantrill covered 10 innings and gave up four runs on 13 hits and three walks while striking out eight.

  • Taijuan Walker SP | LAA

Diamondbacks' Taijuan Walker: May not return as starter

Walker (elbow, shoulder) believes if he returns to action this season, it will be as a reliever, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.

Walker, who has been working his way back from Tommy John elbow surgery, had a shoulder issue pop up out of nowhere Wednesday. He was back in the Diamondbacks clubhouse Saturday, a day after receiving a platelet-rich plasma injection. "I don't think it would make sense for me to come back and try to ramp up to start," Walker said. The right-hander is hoping to end the season on a positive note, and that might mean throwing out of the bullpen.

  • Steven Matz RP | TB

Mets' Steven Matz: Dealt loss in return

Matz (3-3) took the loss against the Marlins on Saturday by allowing two runs on five hits across 3.2 innings. He struck out six and walked two.

Matz was on a limited workload in his return from a forearm injury and was unable to finish the fourth inning despite throwing 81 pitches. He would have had trouble picking up the win regardless with the Mets registering only one hit. Matz had a 2.89 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 13:3 K:BB in his last three starts before landing on the injured list, and he'll look to regain that form Thursday versus the Nationals.

  • Pablo Lopez SP | MIN

Marlins' Pablo Lopez: Fires seven scoreless vs. Mets

Lopez (3-5) earned the win against the Mets on Saturday allowing only one hit in seven scoreless innings. He struck out seven and walked two.

Lopez was rocked for 10 runs on 10 hits by the Mets just last week but delivered a much different result Saturday. The 23-year-old's up-and-down performance leaves him with a 5.06 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 49:13 K:BB as he figures to pitch next weekend at Washington.

  • Aaron Nola SP | PHI

Phillies' Aaron Nola: Fans 12 over six frames

Nola (4-0) earned the win against the Rockies on Saturday by recording 12 strikeouts and allowing one run over six innings. He gave up eight hits and one walk.

Nola reached double-digit strikeouts for the first time this season and started with six scoreless innings, but he gave up a triple and a double to start off the seventh, ending his outing. The 25-year-old will carry a 4.47 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and 60:21 K:BB into Thursday's start versus the Cubs.

  • Chase Anderson RP | TEX

Brewers' Chase Anderson: Gives up zero earned runs

Anderson allowed one unearned run on two hits with three strikeouts and four walks across four innings in a no-decision against the Braves on Saturday.

Activated off the injured list prior to this start, Anderson lasted just 76 pitches and couldn't find the zone at various times. He only started half of the 18 batters he faced with a first-pitch strike, and he walked a batter in every frame but his last. While he didn't give up an earned run, Anderson's failure to work more efficiently cost himself a better chance at the win (although the bullpen blew the lead anyway). In nine appearances, including three starts, Anderson is 2-0 with a 2.66 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 25 strikeouts in 23.2 innings. He is scheduled to pitch again against the Phillies next Saturday.

  • Kevin Gausman SP | CHC

Braves' Kevin Gausman: Yields two runs in no-decision

Gausman allowed two runs on six hits with four strikeouts and two walks across six innings in a no-decision against the Brewers on Saturday.

The right-hander yielded two runs in the first inning but then really only ran into trouble in one of his final five frames. That trouble came in the third, but Gausman worked out of a bases-loaded jam. He didn't get the win but improved most of his other numbers -- 4.31 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 50 strikeouts in 48 innings this season. Gausman will make his next start against the Giants on Thursday.

  • Nationals' Stephen Strasburg: Stifles Cubs for fourth win

Strasburg (4-3) picked up the win Saturday, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits over eight innings while striking out seven in a 5-2 victory over the Cubs.

The right-hander was in firm control all night, generating 15 swinging strikes among his 93 pitches (69 total strikes). Strasburg has delivered five quality starts in his last six trips to the mound, and he'll take a 3.32 ERA and eye-popping 82:16 K:BB through 65 innings into his next outing Thursday, on the road against the Mets.

  • Johnny Cueto SP | LAA

Giants' Johnny Cueto: Hoping for September return

Cueto (elbow) completed a 40-pitch bullpen session Saturday and hopes to rejoin the Giants in September, Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Cueto threw about 25 fastballs but is expected to mix in his other pitches in the coming weeks. Plenty can change between now and September, but to this point the 33-year-old is progressing well in his recovery from Tommy John surgery.

  • Tyler Mahle SP | ATL

Reds' Tyler Mahle: Tosses six scoreless

Mahle (1-5) threw six scoreless innings, allowing only four hits with two walks and five strikeouts to earn his first victory of the season against the Dodgers on Saturday.

While this was his first win, Mahle has pitched much better than his 1-5 record indicates, including twice taking a loss when he allowed just one run. On two more occasions, Mahle yielded one or no runs but did not factor into the decision. He also has a strong 54:11 K:BB. Mahle possesses a 3.51 ERA, 1.17 WHIP in 51.1 innings as well. He will be looking for his second win during his next start at Wrigley Field next Saturday.
