  • Robbie Ray SP | SD

Diamondbacks' Robbie Ray: Labors against Padres

Ray (0-1) allowed three runs on four hits and three walks while striking out seven over 3.2 innings in a loss to the Padres on Saturday.

There was some buzz surrounding Ray given his slimmed-down physique and revamped delivery. Unfortunately, the new delivery and shorter arm action that he showcased in summer camp did not lead to good results in his regular-season debut. In fact, it was more of what we've come to expect from Ray: walks and inefficiency. He needed 97 pitches to record 11 outs. The lefty lines up to face the Dodgers at home next week.

  • Jon Gray SP | TEX

    Rockies' Jon Gray: No-decision Saturday

Gray allowed one run on three hits and three walks while fanning three across 4.2 innings in a no-decision against the Rangers on Saturday.

Gray didn't impress in his season debut and couldn't even complete five innings, as he departed the contest shortly after allowing a run on an RBI single from Shin-Soo Choo. Gray's next start is scheduled for Friday at home against the Padres.

  • Luis Castillo SP | CHW

Reds' Luis Castillo: Strikes out 11 in no-decision

Castillo allowed one run on six hits and one walk while striking out 11 over six innings in a no-decision against the Tigers on Saturday.

Castillo was brilliant -- he induced a whopping 24 swinging strikes on 91 pitches -- but had to sit back and watch as the Reds' bullpen gave up five runs to blow the lead. Pitching half his games in Great American Ball Park is a hindrance, but Castillo's fastball-changeup combo is one of the best in the game and it would be a surprise if he's not among the NL strikeout leaders when its all said and done. He lines up for a home start against the Cubs next week.

  • Zack Wheeler SP | PHI

Phillies' Zack Wheeler: Excellent in Philadelphia debut

Wheeler earned the win versus Miami on Saturday, hurling seven innings and giving up one run on five hits and two walks while striking out four.

Toeing the mound less than a week after his wife gave birth to the couple's first child, Wheeler was in complete control throughout his seven innings, scattering five singles and a pair of walks while throwing 57 of 87 pitches for strikes. His only real trouble came in the fifth inning, when the Marlins put three consecutive runners on base with a pair of singles and a walk, but Wheeler emerged from the threat allowing only one run by inducing an inning-ending double play. After some initial uncertainty about playing out the season, the 30-year-old now appears determined to take the ball for Philadelphia every five turns. His next start is scheduled for Thursday on the road against the loaded Yankees offense.

  • Steven Matz RP | TB

Mets' Steven Matz: Shines in no-decision

Matz allowed one run on two hits and a walk while striking out seven in six innings in a no-decision Saturday versus the Braves.

Matz was excellent, with the only blemish on his line the result of a second-inning Adam Duvall solo home run. Matz had 15 quality starts in 30 starts last season and he's already added his first this year. The 29-year-old southpaw lines up to face the Red Sox at home Thursday.

  • Max Fried SP | NYY

Braves' Max Fried: Solid in no-decision

Fried pitched five innings, allowing two runs on two hits and two walks while striking out five in a no-decision versus the Mets on Saturday.

Fried actually had a no-hitter going into the fifth inning before he surrendered an RBI triple to Amed Rosario, who subsequently scored on a sacrifice fly hit by Jeff McNeil. Fried was taken off the hook for the loss when Marcell Ozuna tied the game for the Braves in the ninth inning. In his first full season as a starter last year, Fried posted a 4.02 ERA and 173 strikeouts in 165.2 innings. His next turn in the rotation comes Thursday at home versus the Rays.

  • Reds' Michael Lorenzen: Allows homer in loss

Lorenzen, who had been nursing a sore forearm, gave up a go-ahead homer to Miguel Cabrera in Saturday's loss to the Tigers.

It was a rough day for the primary right-handed Reds relievers. Lorenzen, Robert Stephenson and Raisel Iglesias all allowed homers, as they turned a 3-1 lead into a 6-4 loss.

  • Alex Wood RP | ATH

Dodgers' Alex Wood: Struggles in season debut

Wood (0-1) took the loss Saturday versus the Giants, allowing three runs on three hits and three walks while striking out four in three innings.

Wood needed 69 pitches to get through those three innings, making it a short debut in 2020 for the southpaw. The 29-year-old Wood had a 1-3 record and 5.80 ERA in seven starts with the Reds last season before signing a one-year contract to begin his second stint with the Dodgers. Wood is expected to take the mound Friday in Arizona for his second start.

  • Logan Webb SP | SF

Giants' Logan Webb: Decent in short outing

Webb allowed one run on six hits and a walk while striking out two in four innings in a no-decision versus the Dodgers on Saturday.

Webb needed 70 pitches (40 strikes) to get through his four innings, allowing just an RBI double to Justin Turner on the scoreboard. The 23-year-old Webb posted a 5.22 ERA in 39.2 innings last year. The right-hander is expected to face the Padres on Thursday for his next appearance, but it's unclear if he'll serve as a traditional starter or a primary pitcher in any of his outings in 2020.

  • Pirates' Trevor Williams: Dealt first loss

Williams (0-1) took the loss Saturday against the Cardinals after allowing three runs on five hits and one walk over 3.2 innings. He had three strikeouts.

The right-hander ran into trouble during the fourth inning, surrendering two runs on four hits and a wild pitch, and he was pulled rather than being allowed to face Kolton Wong a third time. Williams was a strong rotation piece in 2018 with a 3.11 ERA, but he struggled last season with a 5.38 ERA and isn't off to a great start in 2020. He lines up for a tough matchup against the Cubs on the road Friday.
