Max Fried SP | NYY
Braves' Max Fried: Confirmed as Friday's starter
The Braves will activate Fried (back) from the 10-day injured list to start Friday's game against the Mets, Gabriel Burns of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
As anticipated, Fried's bout with back spasms proved to be only a minor concern, as he'll end up spending just over the minimum amount of time on the IL. Prior to getting shut down, Fried noticed a steep downturn in velocity over his previous two starts, so fantasy managers in shallower leagues may not want to activate him right away while he takes on a Mets offense that ranks first in the majors this season with a 124 wRC+.

Zack Wheeler SP | PHI
Phillies' Zack Wheeler: Turns in quality outing
Wheeler allowed three runs on seven hits (one home run) while striking out two across 7.1 innings Wednesday against the Mets. He did not factor into the decision.
Wheeler was incredibly efficient Wednesday as he went a season-high 7.1 innings while throwing 68 of his 95 pitches for strikes. The only major damage the right-hander gave up was a two-run shot to J.D. Davis in the sixth to cut the Phillies' lead to 4-3. Wheeler unfortunately wasn't able to get the win after the Phillies blew their sixth lead this season when up by three or more runs but he has made a great 1-2 punch at the top of the rotation with Aaron Nola with a 2.62 ERA and 1.08 WHIP across 58.1 innings. He figures to take the mound Monday in a matchup with the Nationals.

Merrill Kelly SP | ARI
Diamondbacks' Merrill Kelly: Upbeat following surgery
Kelly (shoulder) said he should begin throwing in late November or early December, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
Kelly underwent surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome last week and is optimistic after talking with medical experts. He also spoke with Orioles right-hander Alex Cobb, who had the same procedure and said he's had no issues since. Kelly expects to be ready by spring training.

Trevor Rogers SP | BAL
Marlins' Trevor Rogers: Allows one run in abbreviated start
Rogers allowed one run on three hits and two walks while striking out three across three innings Wednesday against the Red Sox. He did not factor into the decision.
Rogers got off to a rough start as he allowed the first two batters of the game to reach before picking up three consecutive outs to escape the inning. He later found himself in a similar scenario in the third and couldn't get out of it cleanly as J.D. Martinez drove Alex Verdugo home on a sac fly to right. Despite needing 76 pitches to get through three innings, it was a solid bounce-back performance from Rogers after he got shelled for nine runs against the Phillies last Friday. The 22-year-old has a 6.00 ERA along with a 29:10 K:BB across 21 innings and is set to take the mound Monday against the division-leading Braves.

German Marquez SP | SD
Rockies' German Marquez: Takes loss in quality start
Marquez (2-6) took the loss Wednesday against the A's after giving up three runs on six hits with six strikeouts and four walks over 6.2 innings.
The 25-year-old certainly wasn't at his best Wednesday, as he set a season high with four walks. However, he battled and kept Colorado in the game despite minimal offense. Marquez has a 4.33 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 63:23 K:BB across 68.2 innings and lines up to pitch Monday at San Francisco.

Drew Smyly SP | CHC
Giants' Drew Smyly: Surrenders three runs
Smyly gave up three runs on four hits and a walk and struck out eight over 3.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Mariners on Wednesday.
Smyly threw 51 of 78 pitches for strikes in a solid but short performance. The southpaw has a 3.94 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 27 strikeouts across 16 innings this season. Smyly still hasn't pitched more than four innings in any of his five appearances. His next start is expected to be Monday at home versus the Rockies.

Cole Hamels SP | SD
Braves' Cole Hamels: Throws 52 pitches in debut
Hamels (0-1) allowed three earned runs on three hits and a walk while striking out two across 3.1 innings to take the loss Wednesday against Baltimore.
Hamels made his season debut after working from a triceps injury. He worked two scoreless innings, but he appeared to run out of gas in the third frame when he surrendered two doubles and a walk. He was ultimately pulled after 52 pitches. Despite missing the vast majority of the season, Hamels is a candidate for the Braves' playoff rotation, so the team is likely to focus on building him up in time to make a meaningful contribution in October.

Jacob deGrom SP | TEX
Mets' Jacob deGrom: Hopes to make next starts
DeGrom (hamstring) believes he'll be fine to make his final two starts of the regular season, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports.
The 32-year-old was lifted after two innings Wednesday due to a hamstring spasm, an issue that apparently cropped up during his previous start, though he didn't inform the team at the time. DeGrom's next turn through the rotation lines up for Monday against Tampa Bay, and he appears likely to take the mound again barring a setback.
-
Freddy Peralta SP | TB
Brewers' Freddy Peralta: Earns win in Game 2
Peralta (3-1) pitched two perfect innings and struck out three to earn the win in Game 2 of Wednesday's doubleheader versus the Cardinals.
Peralta followed opener Brent Suter in the contest. The 24-year-old Peralta was particularly impressive in the fifth inning, striking out the side on 14 pitches. He's posted a 3.51 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 43:11 K:BB across 25.2 innings this season. Peralta also has two holds in 13 appearances.
-
Johan Oviedo SP | BOS
Cardinals' Johan Oviedo: Struggles in nightcap
Oviedo (0-3) allowed six runs (five earned) on seven hits and two walks while striking out five over 5.1 innings in a loss in Game 2 of Wednesday's doubleheader versus the Brewers. He also hit three batters.
Oviedo was wild and ineffective in his return to action, although he was able to spare the bullpen from seeing much work. The right-hander has a 5.47 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 16:10 K:BB across 24.2 innings this season. It's uncertain if the 22-year-old Oviedo will be used as a starter again in 2020.
