Fried (forearm) is slated to pitch five innings in his next rehab start Thursday with Triple-A Gwinnett, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports.

If he reaches that goal and all goes smoothly, Fried could return to Atlanta's starting rotation next week in Boston. Sidelined since early May because of a left forearm strain, the 29-year-old southpaw has worked 4.1 scoreless innings with four strikeouts through his first two rehab outings.

Alcantara (3-9) took the loss Wednesday, allowing four runs on eight hits and two walks over six innings against the Cardinals. He struck out seven.

The Cardinals tagged Alcantara for four runs in the first inning, highlighted by a Nolan Gorman three-run homer. Alcantara was able to settle down and hold St. Louis off the board over his final five frames, but Miami couldn't overcome the early deficit. The 27-year-old right-hander had shown some improvement recently, delivering quality starts in three of his previous four outings. Still, it's been a disappointing campaign overall for Alcantara. His ERA is up to 4.70 with a 1.28 WHIP and 106:36 K:BB through 20 starts (126.1 innings). Alcantara's currently slated for another tough matchup against the Rays in his next start.

Cincinnati recalled Stoudt from Triple-A Louisville on Wednesday.

Stoudt has been lit up for 11 earned runs in 10 innings of work this season at the major-league level, but he'll get another look in a long-relief role. Daniel Duarte was optioned out in a corresponding move.

Atlanta manager Brian Snitker said Soroka will likely start Friday's series opener at Milwaukee, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports.

Soroka was pressed into emergency relief duty this past Sunday when Kolby Allard was forced from his start due to left shoulder nerve inflammation. Allard is now on the 60-day injured list and the NL East leaders are still deciding how to cover his spot Saturday versus the Brewers. Soroka has posted a rough 5.40 ERA and 1.50 WHIP through 23.1 major-league innings this year, but he seems to be secure in a regular rotation role for the time being.

Wright (shoulder) is not expected to be an option for Atlanta until early September, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports.

Sometime in August had been viewed as a rough timetable for the right-hander, but it's going to be a bit longer than that. Wright hasn't had a setback, but the club just wants to be extra cautious as he works his way back from a right shoulder strain. Wright is expected to begin throwing shortened bullpen sessions early next week and then regular bullpen sessions by the end of next week.

Arizona placed Davies on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with lower-back inflammation.

Davies struggled mightily in his last start Tuesday at Atlanta, surrendering nine earned runs on eight hits and three walks over 3.2 innings while recording only one strikeout. He'll be sidelined until at least early August and is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Thursday to determine the full extent of the lower-back issue.

May is expected to be sidelined 12 months after undergoing right flexor tendon and UCL reconstruction revision surgery Tuesday, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports.

Reports heading into Wednesday had already suggested that May was getting his flexor tendon repaired, but the UCL revision of his previous Tommy John surgery is new information. With the operation being more invasive than expected, May is expected to be sidelined for a full year, putting his estimated return date roughly around the All-Star break next season.

Woodford (shoulder) has begun a throwing program, Daniel Guerrero of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Woodford landed on the injured list in late June with a right shoulder strain, which is the second stint he's had on the IL this season with a shoulder issue. There's no timetable for the swingman's return.

Wainwright (shoulder) expressed optimism about his health following a bullpen session Tuesday, Daniel Guerrero of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Wainwright received two cortisone injections in his shoulder and back after landing on the injured list earlier this month with a right shoulder strain. He's felt dramatically better since then, including Tuesday during his first mound work since the injury. The 41-year-old will throw a live batting practice session early next week, which he hopes will be used in place of a rehab start. A return in late July or early August is looking realistic.

Rea is scheduled to start Wednesday's game against the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park.

Rea's role coming out of the All-Star break was somewhat in flux since Milwaukee had five other healthy starting pitchers available, but the right-hander will ultimately stick in the rotation after Wade Miley (elbow) was unexpectedly placed on the 15-day injured list Tuesday. The Brewers are optimistic that Miley will be in store for a minimum-length stay on the shelf, but that could still provide enough time for Rea to stake his claim to a more permanent rotation spot over Julio Teheran and/or Adrian Houser if he can deliver one or two quality starts. Rea has worked at least 4.2 innings in each of his last nine outings with Milwaukee while picking up five wins and posting a 4.20 ERA and 1.18 WHIP.
