Randy Vasquez SP | SD
Padres' Randy Vasquez: Slated to start Saturday
The Padres plan to recall Vasquez from Triple-A El Paso to start Saturday's game against the Blue Jays in San Diego.
Acquired from the Yankees over the offseason, Vasquez failed to make the Padres' Opening Day roster but will get a chance to make his San Diego debut this weekend. He'll be joining the rotation as a replacement for Yu Darvish (neck), who was placed on the 15-day injured list Wednesday. Through three starts at El Paso in 2024, Vasquez has pitched to a 7.94 ERA, 1.98 WHIP and 13:4 K:BB in 11.1 innings.

MacKenzie Gore SP | TEX
Nationals' MacKenzie Gore: Inefficient in first loss
Gore (2-1) took the loss Friday, giving up three runs on seven hits and a walk over four innings as the Nationals were downed 5-3 by the Astros. He struck out four.
The southpaw needed 92 pitches (64 strikes) to record his 12 outs, and all the damage off Gore came in the second inning when Houston led off the frame with back-to-back-to-back doubles. It was Gore's shortest outing so far in 2024, and he'll take a 3.60 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 27:6 K:BB through 20 innings into his next start, which lines up for a tough home tilt against the Dodgers next week.

Quinn Priester SP | MIL
Pirates' Quinn Priester: Hit hard in season debut
Priester (0-1) took the loss Friday, giving up five runs (four earned) on seven hits - including three home runs - and a walk over 4.1 innings as the Pirates were routed 8-1 by the Red Sox. He struck out two.
It's never a good sign for a pitcher when they have more homers allowed than strikeouts, and the first long ball he served up -- a solo shot by Wilyer Abreu in the first inning -- actually left PNC Park completely. Priester was making his 2024 debut for Pittsburgh on Friday, and after tossing 53 of 86 pitches for strikes, he could be headed back to Triple-A Indianapolis. If the 23-year-old righty sticks around, his next start will likely come at home next week against the Brewers.

Chris Sale SP | ATL
Braves' Chris Sale: Fans seven during win
Sale (2-1) earned the win Friday versus Texas, surrendering three earned runs on five hits and a walk while striking out seven batters across seven innings.
Sale got off to a poor start Friday by allowing a leadoff home run to Marcus Semien, but he was able to pull it together quickly and keep the Rangers relatively quiet while Atlanta's offense gave him a nice lead to work with. The 35-year-old southpaw has now reached seven innings in back-to-back starts, though his ERA remains at 4.38 through 24.2 innings. He is lined up to make his next start Wednesday against the Marlins.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto SP | LAD
Dodgers' Yoshinobu Yamamoto: Strikes out nine in no-decision
Yamamoto did not factor into the decision Friday against the Mets, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits and one walk over six innings. He struck out nine.
The outing was a mixed bag for Yamamoto. On the one hand, he managed to strike out a season-best nine batters. On the other, he allowed a season-worst seven hits. After five starts, Yamamoto sports a 4.50 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 30:5 K:BB over 22 innings. His next start is slated to come against the Nationals on the road.

Sean Manaea RP | NYM
Mets' Sean Manaea: Solid in no-decision
Manaea did not factor into the decision Friday against the Dodgers, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks over five innings. He struck out three.
After allowing six earned runs to the Royals in his last start, Manaea pitched well against the dangerous Dodgers lineup. The Mets lefty managed to stifle the MVP trio of Mookie Betts, Shohei Ohtani and Freddie Freeman, as they collectively went 1-for-8 with one walk and two strikeouts. Manaea faces a much less daunting task in his next start, scheduled to come against the Giants on the road.
-
Jordan Montgomery RP | TEX
Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Victorious in Arizona debut
Montgomery (1-0) earned the win Friday, allowing one run on four hits and no walks over six innings against the Giants. He struck out three.
Montgomery looked sharp in his season debut, and the left-hander wasn't even in peak form as his fastball averaged 93.3 mph, down 1.7 mph from last year. Given that Montgomery signed with Arizona on March 29, it's understandable he still has some work to do to get fully up to speed. His next start is scheduled to come at home against his former team, the Cardinals.
-
Blake Snell SP | LAD
Giants' Blake Snell: Lit up for five runs
Snell (0-3) took the loss Friday against Arizona, allowing five runs on nine hits and one walk over 4.2 innings. He struck out three.
Snell continued to look rusty -- he last gave up nine hits in a June 16, 2021 start in Colorado. The 31-year-old lefty has struggled tremendously out of the gate, generating an 11.57 ERA, 1.97 WHIP and 12:5 K:BB in 11.2 innings. Snell will look to get back on track in his next start, slated to come against the Mets at home.
-
Matt Waldron RP | TOR
Padres' Matt Waldron: Coughs up five runs in loss
Waldron (0-2) took the loss Friday, allowing five runs on seven hits and one walk over 4.2 innings against Toronto. He struck out two.
After allowing a first inning solo homer to Justin Turner, Waldron ran into trouble in the second. The Blue Jays kept putting the ball in play, collecting five hits and four runs off the Padres starter in the frame. Waldron has a 4.74 ERA and 1.53 WHIP over his first 19 innings this season. His next start is scheduled to come on the road against Colorado.

Kyle Gibson SP | BAL
Cardinals' Kyle Gibson: Walks four in no-decision
Gibson yielded a run on three hits and four walks over six innings in a no-decision Friday. He struck out three in the loss to Milwaukee.
Gibson was tagged with a run in the third inning but otherwise didn't face much trouble in the quality start. He was in line for a tough-luck loss before the Cardinals pushed the game to extra innings. After earning a win in his Cardinals debut, Gibson was hammered for 11 runs over his next two starts. Friday's outing lowered his ERA to 5.04 with a 14:10 K:BB through 25 frames. Gibson is currently projected to face Arizona at home next week.
