  • Kyle Nelson RP | ATL

Diamondbacks' Kyle Nelson: Placed on 15-day IL

Nelson was placed on the 15-day injured list with left shoulder inflammation Tuesday.

Nelson will now be sidelined for at least a couple weeks while tending to inflammation in his pitching elbow, which is never good news for a hurler. The 27-year-old had been going through a rough stretch on the mound, surrendering five earned runs over 1.1 innings in his last three appearances. It's unclear if the left-hander's stretch of poor performances had anything to do with potential arm issues or not, but he'll now at least have an opportunity to mentally reset while on the shelf. In a corresponding move, Arizona recalled right-hander Justin Martinez from Triple-A Reno on Tuesday.

  • Diamondbacks' Justin Martinez: Returns to Arizona

The Diamondbacks recalled Martinez from Triple-A Reno on Tuesday.

Martinez appeared in two games with the D-backs before being sent down to Triple-A on Sunday, throwing three scoreless innings while striking out two batters and walking four. He'll give Arizona additional depth in its bullpen as Kyle Nelson (shoulder) lands on the 15-day IL.

  • Miguel Castro RP | CHW

Diamondbacks' Miguel Castro: To IL with shoulder injury

The Diamondbacks placed Castro on the 15-day injured list Tuesday, retroactive to April 21, with right shoulder inflammation.

Castro will undergo an MRI on his right shoulder Wednesday, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports. The reliever was dealing with discomfort for a bit, but it seems to have gradually gotten worse. He surrendered two runs on four hits across one inning during his last appearance Saturday. The 29-year-old is eligible for activation May 6, a team off day before the start of a series against the Reds. In a corresponding move, Andrew Saalfrank was recalled from Triple-A Reno.

  • Diamondbacks' Andrew Saalfrank: Called up Tuesday

The Diamondbacks recalled Saalfrank from Triple-A Reno on Tuesday.

The left-hander missed out on Arizona's Opening Day roster but will join the big club Tuesday as Miguel Castro (shoulder) moves to the injured list. Saalfrank made his MLB debut with 10 relief appearances last season and didn't allow an earned run over 10.1 innings.

  • Giants' Landen Roupp: Optioned to Triple-A

The Giants optioned Roupp to Triple-A Sacramento on Tuesday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.

Roupp will be pushed off the big-league roster following the acquisition of Mitch White from Toronto. Roupp allowed five earned runs across 10.1 innings during his first career stint in the majors and could return later in the year to give San Francisco's bullpen a fresh arm if needed.

  • Luis Ortiz RP | NYM

Phillies' Luis Ortiz: Starts rehab stint

The Phillies assigned Ortiz (ankle) to Single-A Clearwater on Tuesday to begin a rehab assignment.

Ortiz suffered an ankle sprain in his season debut March 30 but is now ready for game action. The right-hander could make a few appearances in the minors before being cleared to join the Phillies.

  • Mets' Max Kranick: Activated, optioned to Triple-A

The Mets reinstated Kranick (hamstring) from the 15-day injured list and optioned him to Triple-A Syracuse on Tuesday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.

Kranick has been on the injured list since the start of the season due to a Grade 2 left hamstring strain he suffered during spring training. He made four total rehab appearances between the Mets' Single-A and Double-A affiliates, allowing five earned runs across 7.2 innings, and he'll now move up to Triple-A as he comes off the IL. The 26-year-old right-hander owns a 5.56 ERA across 43.2 big-league innings and hasn't pitched in the majors since 2022.

  • Luke Little RP | CHC

Cubs' Luke Little: Back with big club

The Cubs recalled Little from Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports.

Little was just returned to Iowa on Monday after serving as the team's 27th man during Sunday's doubleheader against the Marlins, but he's been rerouted back to the big-league bullpen. He'll give manager Craig Counsell another lefty option in relief.

  • Drew Smyly SP | CHC

Cubs' Drew Smyly: To IL with hip injury

The Cubs placed Smyly on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with a right hip impingement, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports.

Smyly last pitched Sunday against the Marlins and must have suffered an injury during the outing. He'll be eligible to return May 7, although it's not clear at this point whether he will be ready at that time.

  • Blake Treinen RP | LAD

Dodgers' Blake Treinen: Cleared for rehab assignment

Treinen (chest) has joined Triple-A Oklahoma City to begin a rehab assignment, Eric Stephen of SBNation.com reports.

It will be his first game action since he suffered a bruised lung when he was struck in the chest by a comebacker in early March. Since he's missed so much time, Treinen would figure to require a handful of rehab appearances before he's ready to rejoin the Dodgers' bullpen. The 35-year-old hasn't pitched for the Dodgers since 2022, as he's missed most of the last two seasons following shoulder surgery.
