Gearrin surrendered two runs on three hits while retiring just one batter in Tuesday's loss to the Dodgers.

Gearrin has struggled since returning from the disabled list Aug. 18, surrendering five runs in just 1.2 innings. After posting a 2.16 ERA and 13 holds through his first 36 appearances, Gearrin fell off the map in the middle of the summer months before being placed on the disabled list with a shoulder injury. Even if he rights the ship, he likely still won't have value in leagues that count holds due to the strong play of Derek Law, Hunter Strickland and Sergio Romo, who have all solidified their roles as late-inning options for the Giants.

De Leon seems like a top candidate to start Saturday against the Cubs in place of Scott Kazmir (neck).

The stars seem aligned for De Leon's long-awaited major league debut, as Kazmir is on the DL and De Leon is coming off his most dominant performance yet with Triple-A Oklahoma City. De Leon took a no-hitter into the seventh inning Monday and finished with 10 strikeouts over seven scoreless innings, his second straight start with double-digit strikeouts and zero walks. He has posted a 2.86 ERA, .199 BAA and 98:20 K:BB in 78.2 innings with Oklahoma City this season. An official announcement regarding Saturday's starter may not come until later in the week.

De La Rosa (elbow) could be shifted to the bullpen whenever he is healthy enough to return, Jack Magruder of Fanrag Sports reports.

De La Rosa hasn't pitched since May, and his recent MRI results were sent to Dr. James Andrews, so the second Tommy John surgery of the righty's career might be on the horizon. Teammate Daniel Hudson was moved to the bullpen after his second Tommy John surgery, and the Diamondbacks might follow the same path with De La Rosa. His mid-90s fastball would probably play well out of the bullpen, but if De La Rosa does have another Tommy John, we might not see him in any role until 2018.

Whalen allowed four runs on two hits and four walks and lasted just 2.2 innings in a no-decision Tuesday against Arizona.

Whalen has just one quality start in five chances this season and has been prone to lapses in control, as he has walked 12 batters in just 24.2 innings. This is already the second time he has walked four batters in a start this season, and he also hit his third batter Tuesday night. Until he can rein in the control, he'll struggle to improve his 6.57 ERA.

Chapman walked two batters but managed to clean up a two-out save Tuesday against the Padres.

Chapman's services were only needed because Felix Pena couldn't nail down the game with a 5-0 lead. Chapman had to get warmed up in a hurry and threw 10 balls against just nine strikes, but he got two swings and misses, including one to strike out Christian Bethancourt to end the game. He owns a 1.13 ERA with 12 strikeouts in eight innings this month, with seven saves in eight chances.

Jansen picked up a four-out save, his 36th, despite allowing a run Tuesday against the Giants.

Jansen gave up a meaningless solo home run to Denard Span in the ninth after the Dodgers had extended their lead to five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. He has now converted eight straight save opportunities with a ludicrous 20:2 K:BB in just 9.2 innings as he remains one of the nastiest relievers in the major leagues.

Lopez (2-2) allowed six runs (four earned) on seven hits over just 2.2 innings in a disastrous loss Tuesday in Baltimore. He also walked three and struck out two.

This was the worst outing of the rookie's short major-league career, and it completely negates the momentum he had built up with a pair of strong starts in his first two August appearances. Lopez will look to get back on track at home Sunday against the Rockies.

Gsellman relieved an injured and ineffective Jon Niese in the first inning Tuesday and tossed 3.2 scoreless innings to pick up the win in his Major League debut.

Gsellman allowed both inherited runners to score while walking three and allowing two hits in his outing. But he was able to dance in-and-out of trouble, striking out two in the effort. If Niese's knee injury lands him on the disabled list as expected and Steven Matz misses more than one start with his shoulder injury, Gsellman could slot into the team's starting rotation. If not, he will remain a long man out of the bullpen.

Fields was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City on Tuesday.

The right-hander has given up five runs in his last five appearances but pitched well initially upon arrival from Houston, and will likely return next week when rosters expand to 40 players.

Hoffman allowed seven runs on seven hits in four innings Saturday against the Chicago Cubs in his first big league start.

It was a double whammy for Hoffman, facing the best team in baseball in the thin air in Colorado. He walked one batter while striking out two in the 9-2 loss to the Cubbies. Hoffman held Chicago scoreless through three innings, but a throwing error opened the floodgates in the fourth. Hoffman's next start is slated for Friday at Washington.
