Clay Holmes SP | CHC
Pirates' Clay Holmes: Rocked by Dodgers in first start
Holmes (0-1) gave up four runs on five hits and three walks with two strikeouts through 2.1 innings in a loss Wednesday to the Dodgers.
Holmes gave up a pair of doubles among his five hits, but it was the utter lack of control that really did him in, as he tossed just 34 strikes on 64 pitches. Control has been an issue for him in the minor leagues as well, as he has posted a 4.0 BB/9 or higher every year since 2016. Holmes is unlikely to hold onto this rotation spot for long, as Joe Musgrove (finger) could be ready to return Tuesday against Washington.

Victor Arano RP | WAS
Phillies' Victor Arano: Grabs first career save
Arano earned his first career save by tossing a pair of scoreless innings Wednesday against the Orioles, walking one batter and striking out three.
Arano entered the top of the eighth with a three-run lead and got the job done easily, allowing just a single baserunner over the final two innings. He's posted strong numbers for the Phillies this season, throwing 31 innings with a 2.32 ERA and a 9.6 K/9. He could find himself in high-leverage situations more frequently going forward, though Seranthony Dominguez remains firmly atop the pecking order in the Philadelphia bullpen.

Matt Bowman RP | MIN
Cardinals' Matt Bowman: Impresses again for Memphis
Bowman (finger) fired a scoreless seventh inning in Triple-A Memphis' win over Iowa on Tuesday, allowing a hit and recording two strikeouts.
Bowman has looked impressive through three rehab appearances, allowing an earned run on three hits over three innings while generating a 5:0 K:BB. The blisters that have tormented the right-hander haven't resurfaced during his current rehab assignment, but that was also the case in his most recent minor-league stint before they ultimately returned shortly after his activation. Although Bowman is seemingly making very good progress, manager Mike Matheny currently has no firm timetable for his activation, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Bryan Shaw RP | CIN
Rockies' Bryan Shaw: Set for pair of rehab appearances
Shaw (calf) will make rehab appearances Friday and Sunday for Triple-A Albuquerque, Nick Groke of The Athletic Denver reports.
Shaw struggled to a 7.57 ERA prior to going down with a calf strain in late June. If he ends up needing just the pair of rehab appearances, he could be lined up to return Tuesday for the start of next week's mid-week series against Arizona.

Zach Neal RP | ATH
Dodgers' Zach Neal: Shipped to Dodgers
Neal was traded from the Reds to the Dodgers on Wednesday along with reliever Dylan Floro and international signing bonus pool space in exchange for minor-league pitchers James Marinan and Aneurys Zabala.
The Dodgers will get Neal back from the Reds after previously trading him to Cincinnati in April, but he's probably the least desirable of the three commodities Los Angeles received in Wednesday's deal. The 29-year-old owns a 4.94 ERA over 31 career appearances in the big leagues and has been even worse across 49.1 innings at the Triple-A level in 2018, posting a 5.47 ERA and 1.36 WHIP while notching just 29 strikeouts.
-
Pierce Johnson RP | CIN
Giants' Pierce Johnson: Sent down to Triple-A
Johnson was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento on Wednesday, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic Bay Area reports.
Johnson had an 8.55 ERA over his last 20 innings and a 5.75 ERA overall for the season. Kelby Tomlinson was recalled from Sacramento in a corresponding move.

Dylan Floro RP | ARI
Dodgers' Dylan Floro: Dealt to Dodgers
Floro was traded from the Reds to the Dodgers on Wednesday along with minor-league pitcher Zach Neal and international signing bonus pool space in exchange for minor-league pitchers James Marinan and Aneurys Zabala.
Floro had been a capable performer for the Reds in long relief this season, posting a 2.72 ERA and 1.40 WHIP in 36.1 innings. A 6.7 K/9 limits Floro's fantasy appeal even as a ratio stabilizer in NL-only or deeper mixed formats, but his 56.8 percent groundball rate should at least help him enjoy decent results out of the bullpen as he heads to Los Angeles. Floro is scheduled to arrive in California over the weekend and should be formally added to the 25-man roster ahead of Friday's series opener against the Angels, according to Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register.

Matt Grace RP | ARI
Nationals' Matt Grace: Strong relief effort against BoSox
Grace allowed only one hit and struck out four in four scoreless innings of relief Wednesday in a 3-0 loss to the Red Sox.
Pressed into service when Erick Fedde (shoulder) was forced to exit the game a few pitches into the second inning, Grace was exceptional in his longest appearance of the year, helping to save the rest of the Nats' bullpen. The left-hander threw 46 pitches (33 strikes), so he'll likely be unavailable for a few days, but he now sports a 3.34 ERA and 25:5 K:BB through 29.2 innings on the season in a low-leverage role.

Tanner Rainey RP | DET
Reds' Tanner Rainey: Returns to Cincinnati
The Reds recalled Rainey from Triple-A Louisville on Wednesday.
Cincinnati will bring up a pair of relievers in Rainey and Cody Reed from Triple-A to bolster the bullpen after long reliever Dylan Floro was traded to the Dodgers prior to Wednesday's game against the White Sox. Rainey has previously made six appearances for the Reds, surrendering nine runs on six hits and nine walks over six innings. Those poor numbers will likely force him to settle for a low-leverage relief role while he's up with the big club.

Carl Edwards RP | DET
Cubs' Carl Edwards Jr.: In line to return Friday
Edwards (shoulder) is expected to return from the 10-day disabled list ahead of Friday's series opener against the Reds, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports.
The Cubs had hoped to bring Edwards back from the DL earlier in the week, but those plans were scrapped after he retired only two of the five batters he faced and issued two walks in his second rehab outing with Triple-A Iowa on Monday. Edwards is scheduled to make another appearance Wednesday for Iowa and should be cleared to rejoin the Cubs afterward if he fares respectably in the outing. Once Edwards is reinstated from the DL, expect him to slot back in as one of the top setup men for closer Brandon Morrow.
