  • Reds' Reiver Sanmartin: Tabbed for MLB debut Monday

Sanmartin will be called up from Triple-A Louisville to start Monday against the Pirates, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Sanmartin was acquired along with Sonny Gray from the Mariners back in 2019, and he's slated to make his big-league debut Monday. The 25-year-old has spent most of this season at Triple-A and posted a 3.94 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 89:23 K:BB over 82.1 innings. He's filling the rotation spot of Wade Miley (neck) and could make another start next weekend if Miley is unable to return from the injured list.

  • David Bednar RP | NYY

Pirates' David Bednar: Back from injured list

Bednar (oblique) was activated from the 10-day injured list Sunday.

Bednar landed the shelf with a strained right oblique Sept. 14, and he'll rejoin the active roster after a brief stint on the IL. The 26-year-old should take over as Pittsburgh's top closer, though Chris Stratton likely will still be in the mix for those opportunities depending on the situation.

  • Jesse Chavez RP | ATL

Braves' Jesse Chavez: Opening again Sunday

Chavez will start Sunday's game against the Padres, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports.

Chavez will once again serve as an opener with Atlanta employing a bullpen game for the series finale in San Diego. The veteran right-hander has a 2.37 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 34:11 K:BB over 30.1 innings this season, and he's unlikely to pitch much more than an inning Sunday.

  • Josh Hader RP | HOU

Brewers' Josh Hader: Closes out win for 34th save

Hader walked one and struck out one in a scoreless inning to earn the save in Saturday's 2-1 win over the Mets.

Few relievers have pitched better than Hader this year, and he's been nearly untouchable with a 17.1-inning scoreless streak dating back to the start of August. In that span, he's allowed six hits and 10 walks while striking out 29. For the season, the southpaw is 34-for-35 in save chances with a 1.29 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 94:24 K:BB across 55.2 innings.

  • Wil Crowe RP | PIT

Pirates' Wil Crowe: Takes loss against Phillies

Crowe (4-8) allowed three earned runs in 4.2 innings Saturday, giving up eight hits and four walks while striking out two in a 3-0 loss to Philadelphia.

The righty, who has surrendered 25 homers in 110.2 innings, threw only 57 of 95 pitches for strikes Saturday. Crowe has completed six innings in just two of 24 starts. He has shown small glimpses of promise -- he threw five innings of one-run ball in his last start. With a 5.77 ERA and 1.63 WHIP, however, the rookie is little more than an innings eater at this young stage of his career.

  • Jordan Hicks RP | CHW

Cardinals' Jordan Hicks: Begins rehab assignment

Hicks (elbow) began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Memphis on Saturday, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.

Hicks has been out since the start of May with elbow inflammation. He doesn't appear to have time to make it back before the end of the regular season, and reports indicate he'll be sent to the Arizona Fall League, which seemingly means he isn't being considered for a spot on the team's playoff roster.

  • Jake Cousins RP | LAD

Brewers' Jake Cousins: Out with biceps strain

Cousins landed on the 10-day injured list with a strained right biceps Saturday.

With just nine days left on the schedule, the move ends Cousins' regular season. Whether he has a chance to return during the playoffs is unknown. He'll finish his rookie season with a 2.70 ERA in 30 innings of relief, with his 35.2 percent strikeout rate proving to be more than enough to overcome a 15.2 percent walk rate. Miguel Sanchez was recalled to take his spot in the bullpen.

  • Cionel Perez RP | NYM

Reds' Cionel Perez: Recalled by Reds

Perez was recalled by the Reds on Saturday.

Perez threw 22 innings of relief for the Reds earlier in the season but didn't look particularly good, struggling to a 6.95 ERA, 1.86 WHIP and 22:20 K:BB. He'll replace Wade Miley, who landed on the injured list with a neck strain, though the Reds will likely call someone else up when it gets to Miley's turn in the rotation, as Perez has exclusively pitched out of the bullpen this season.

  • Matt Moore RP | BOS

Phillies' Matt Moore: Shifts to 60-day injured list

Moore (back) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Saturday, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports.

The move confirms that the back strain that sent Moore to the injured list Thursday will in fact be season-ending. His return to MLB after a 2020 season spent in Japan wound up being a disappointing one, as he struggled to a 6.29 ERA and 1.59 WHIP across 13 starts and 11 relief appearances. The transaction clears space on the 40-man roster for the Phillies to select Kyle Dohy's contract.

  • David Bednar RP | NYY

    Pirates' David Bednar: Progressing well

Bednar (oblique) threw a bullpen session Friday and is progressing well, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

There are nine games left in the regular season, and manager Derek Shelton said the team should have some clarity on when Bednar will be available within the next few days, so it's not a guarantee he will make it back before the end of the season, despite the fact he is trending in the right direction. Chris Stratton has been working as the closer, but no Pirate has recorded a save within the past week.
