  • Reds' Reiver Sanmartin: Not starting, could follow opener

Sanmartin won't start Thursday's game against the Dodgers but could follow an opener, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

The 25-year-old was previously penciled in to start Thursday's series opener, but reliever Luis Cessa will instead take the mound for Cincinnati. The team hasn't officially announced that Sanmartin will pitch, but following an opener could be beneficial against a stacked lineup after he gave up five earned runs in his first start of the season.

  • Pedro Avila RP | CLE

Padres' Pedro Avila: Joins big club

The Padres recalled Avila from Triple-A El Paso on Wednesday.

Avila gives San Diego an extra right-handed arm out of the bullpen after Austin Adams (forearm) was placed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday in a corresponding move. The 25-year-old Avila previously made one spot start apiece for the big club in 2019 and 2021 but has otherwise pitched in the minors over the past three seasons.

  • Austin Adams RP | BOS

Padres' Austin Adams: Goes on IL with forearm strain

The Padres placed Adams on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with a right forearm strain.

Earlier Wednesday, manager Bob Melvin classified the injury Adams suffered in Tuesday's loss to the Giants as mild, but the right-hander's placement on the IL with a diagnosis of a forearm strain could suggest otherwise. For now, the Padres appear content to have Adams treat the injury through rest and rehab, but it's far from a given that he'll be ready to return from the IL when first eligible. San Diego recalled Pedro Avila from Triple-A El Paso to provide an extra right-handed arm in the bullpen while Adams is sidelined.

  • Yunior Marte RP | CIN

Giants' Yunior Marte: Heads back to Triple-A

Marte was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento on Wednesday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Marte made his major-league debut Tuesday against the Padres and allowed a hit and no walks in a scoreless relief inning. However, he'll now head back to Sacramento after John Brebbia was reinstated from the bereavement list Wednesday.

  • John Brebbia RP | COL

Giants' John Brebbia: Returns from bereavement list

Brebbia (personal) was reinstated from the bereavement list Wednesday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Brebbia will return to the Giants after missing the minimum of three games while on the bereavement list. He made two appearances to begin the year and allowed no hits and a walk in 1.2 scoreless innings.

  • Jordan Hicks RP | CHW

Cardinals' Jordan Hicks: Earns win in relief

Hicks (1-0) pitched two shutout innings, allowing a walk and striking out two to earn the win Tuesday versus the Royals.

Hicks is expected to enter the rotation officially during this weekend's series versus the Brewers. He was called on in relief Tuesday to maintain his pitching schedule, and he delivered quality innings while throwing 18 of his 27 pitches for strikes. The hard-throwing right-hander has worked as a reliever in his three previous major-league seasons, and it may take him a few turns through the rotation to build up to a starter's workload.

  • Luke Jackson RP | SEA

Braves' Luke Jackson: Gets Tommy John surgery

Atlanta announced Wednesday that Jackson underwent Tommy John surgery Wednesday in Arlington, Texas.

Tommy John surgery always appeared to be the likely outcome for Jackson after an MRI earlier this month revealed that he was dealing with UCL damage in his right elbow. Now that the procedure has been completed, Jackson will be sidelined for the entire 2022 season, and his recovery will likely extend into the early portion of the 2023 campaign as well.

  • Cardinals' Giovanny Gallegos: Converts first save

Gallegos pitched a perfect inning to earn the save in Tuesday's 6-5 win over the Royals.

Gallegos received his first save chance of the year and got through it without drama. The 30-year-old right-hander isn't the Cardinals' official closer, but he's one of their more proven high-leverage arms with 19 saves and 44 holds to his name over the last three campaigns. Tuesday was his second appearance of the season after a scoreless inning in a non-save situation last Saturday versus the Pirates.

  • Austin Adams RP | BOS

Padres' Austin Adams: Forearm injury viewed as mild

Manager Bob Melvin clarified that the forearm injury that Adams picked up in his relief appearance in Tuesday's 13-2 loss to the Giants is considered mild, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports.

Adams will avoid a trip to the injured list for now, but those plans could change if the Padres aren't confident the right-hander will be ready to go for the Padres' upcoming four-game series with Atlanta that begins Thursday. He's made two relief appearances for San Diego so far this season, striking out two over 2.1 scoreless innings while also picking up a win.

  • Dakota Hudson SP | LAA

Cardinals' Dakota Hudson: Allows three runs in no-decision

Hudson took a no-decision versus the Royals on Tuesday. He allowed three runs on five hits and no walks with four strikeouts in four innings.

Hudson departed with the Cardinals ahead, but he didn't work deep enough into the game to get the win. The right-hander threw 39 of 70 pitches for strikes, which makes the fact he didn't allow a walk all the more noteworthy. Injuries have derailed his last two seasons, but the 27-year-old is expected to work as a starter throughout the year. He lines up to make his next start on the road versus the Marlins next week.
