  • Reds' Reiver Sanmartin: Charged with nine runs in loss

Sanmartin (0-3) took the loss to the Padres on Tuesday, allowing nine earned runs on eight hits and one walk over three-plus innings. He struck out two batters.

Everything unraveled for Sanmartin in the fourth inning, although not a lot outside of Eric Hosmer's home run was hit particularly hard. Regardless, Sanmartin now sits with a 10.91 ERA this season, so he may very well be the odd man out of the rotation once Luis Castillo (shoulder) is ready to go. The Reds could even turn elsewhere in the meantime or perhaps go with a bullpen day in Sanmartin's spot.

  • Jordan Hicks RP | CHW

Cardinals' Jordan Hicks: X-rays come back negative

Hicks had X-rays on his right wrist come back negative after leaving Tuesday's game against the Mets, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports

The 25-year-old was struck on the right wrist by a 97-mph comebacker during Tuesday's start, but it appears he escaped with just a bruise. He gave up two runs on two hits with two walks and a strikeout over two innings before exiting the contest and is in line for the loss. Hicks' next turn through the rotation lines up for Sunday versus Arizona, though it's unclear if he'll be available for that start.

Cardinals' Jordan Hicks: Exits with bruised wrist

Hicks was removed from Tuesday's start against the Mets with a right wrist contusion, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.

Hicks was struck on the wrist by a 97-mph comebacker during the second inning and initially remained in the game, but he was in clear discomfort on the mound during the third and was lifted after badly spiking a pitch. The right-hander allowed two runs on two hits with two walks and a strikeout over two innings and exited in line for the loss. Hicks' availability for his next turn through the rotation is up in the air as he continues to be evaluated.

  • Zack Littell SP | WAS

Giants' Zack Littell: Lands on injured list

Littell (undisclosed) was placed on the injured list Tuesday.

The move didn't come with an injury designation, so Littell may have been placed on the COVID-19 IL. Kervin Castro was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento in a corresponding move.

  • Abner Uribe RP | MIL

Brewers' Abner Uribe: Undergoes knee surgery

Uribe underwent surgery Tuesday to repair the meniscus in his left knee and will be sidelined for 6-to-8 months, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

Uribe is a flamethrower who was moving up prospect lists, but his season will come to an early end due to his injury. If all goes as planned with his recovery, the 21-year-old righty should be ready to go when spring training rolls around in 2023.

  • Sam Howard RP | DET

Pirates' Sam Howard: Joins Bucs bullpen

The Pirates recalled Howard from Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday.

The addition of Howard gives the Pirates another lefty reliever after southpaw Anthony Banda (illness) was placed on the 10-day injured list in a corresponding move. After opening the season on the IL with back spasms, Howard was activated last Wednesday and optioned to Indianapolis, where he's given up an earned run over 2.2 innings between his two appearances with the affiliate.

  • Anthony Banda RP | MIN

Pirates' Anthony Banda: Sidelined with non-COVID illness

The Pirates placed Banda on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a non-COVID-19-related viral illness, retroactive to April 23.

Unless Banda later tests positive for the coronavirus and reverts to the COVID-19 IL, he'll have to miss at least 10 days while he recovers from his current ailment. The Pirates called up fellow lefty reliever Sam Howard from Triple-A Indianapolis to replace Banda in the bullpen.

  • Trevor May RP | ATH

Mets' Trevor May: Grabs first win

May (1-0) picked up the win in Monday's victory over the Cardinals despite giving up two runs on three hits and a walk in one inning of relief. He struck out one.

With the game tied 0-0 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning, May took over from Max Scherzer and quickly made a mess of things, loading the bases with one out before Tyler O'Neill drove a two-run single to left field. Fortunately for May, the Mets rallied for five runs in the top of the ninth. The veteran reliever is struggling to begin the season with an 8.53 ERA, 1.89 WHIP and 5:2 K:BB through 6.1 innings, but he has stumbled into one win, one save and one hold in his six appearances.

  • Victor Arano RP | WAS

Nationals' Victor Arano: Pitch mix fueling success

Arano credits his success early this season to reducing usage of his four-seam fastball in favor of his sinker and slider, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports.

The 27-year-old right-hander has emerged as a viable high-leverage arm for the Nationals, posting a 14:1 K:BB through his first nine innings this year with a 2.00 ERA and two holds. Arano had some success with the Phillies in 2018, but injuries the following season derailed his career until he got another chance with Washington this spring. If he can stay healthy, he could provide some stability to a Nats bullpen that desperately needs it.

  • Tyler Gilbert RP | CHW

Diamondbacks' Tyler Gilbert: Works as reliever

Gilbert allowed one run on two hits and one walk while striking out three over three innings in Monday's 4-0 loss to the Dodgers.

Gilbert, who made a spot start last week against the Nationals, was called up Monday and will operate out of the bullpen. His role could change, per Theo Mackie of the Arizona Republic, who reports manager Torey Lovullo left the door open for Gilbert to start down the road. The left-hander made six starts in 2021, posting a 3.47 ERA and 1.02 WHIP with a 20/11 K/BB ratio over 36.1 innings.
