Mariners' Andres Munoz: Blown save, loss vs. Tigers

Munoz (2-4) took the loss Thursday against Detroit, allowing one run on one hit while picking up a strikeout in one-third of an inning.

Munoz entered in the eighth inning, tasked with protecting a 1-0 lead with two outs and a runner on third. He'd proceed to give up a two-run homer to Javier Baez, sticking him with a blown save and the eventual loss. Munoz hadn't allowed a run in his previous 14.1 innings prior to Thursday, and he'd given up just one hit in that span. His ERA now sits at 1.35 with a 0.92 WHIP and 57:20 K:BB across 46.2 innings while converting 18 of 22 save chances this year.

  • Liam Hendriks RP | MIN

Red Sox's Liam Hendriks: Beginning assignment Sunday

Hendriks (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment Sunday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.

Hendriks has spent the entire season on the injured list working his way back from Tommy John surgery, and he's now been cleared to return to a competitive setting after throwing several rounds of live batting practice. Manager Alex Cora said the goal will be for the 35-year-old reliever to throw seven innings in the minors before returning from the IL, so he's likely a couple weeks away from being activated.

  • Penn Murfee RP | CHW

Astros' Penn Murfee: Ready for rehab assignment

Murfee (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment with Single-A Fayetteville on Thursday, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.

Murfee has been on the shelf all season while recovering from July 2023 Tommy John surgery, but he's now ready to advance to the final phase of the rehab process after he tossed 25 pitches in a live batting practice session earlier this week. The right-hander is expected to require a handful of appearances in the minors before returning from the 60-day injured list and settling into a spot in the Houston bullpen, likely at some point in September.

  • Cole Sulser RP | TB

Rays' Cole Sulser: Optioned to Triple-A

The Rays optioned Sulser to Triple-A Durham on Thursday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Sulser struck out two in a scoreless inning during his lone appearance after the Rays recalled him this past weekend. The transaction clears a spot for Ryan Pepiot (knee), who will return from the 15-day injured list to start Friday against the Diamondbacks.

  • Collin Snider RP | CHC

Mariners' Collin Snider: Takes second loss Wednesday

Snider (2-2) took the extra-inning loss against the Tigers on Wednesday, allowing an unearned run on a hit and a walk while recording one strikeout over one-third of an inning.

Snider allowed a game-winning double to pinch hitter Akil Baddoo just three batters into his 10th-inning stint on the mound. The right-hander hasn't allowed an earned run in his last 10 appearances, although he's invited some trouble by surrendering at least one hit in six of those outings and issuing a free pass in three of them as well. Nevertheless, Snider's impressive swing-and-miss stuff seems to get him out of jams more often than not, as he boasts a 10.1 K/9 and 1.13 ERA across 24 innings this season.

  • Orioles' Seranthony Dominguez: Racks up third save

Dominguez walked one and struck out one in a scoreless ninth inning Wednesday to record his third save of the season, and second with the Orioles, in a 4-1 win over the Nationals.

Craig Kimbrel last pitched Sunday, but it was still Dominguez that manager Brandon Hyde turned to in the ninth Wednesday to protect a three-run lead. There's been no official word that Kimbrel is out as Baltimore's closer, but his hold on the job is looking tenuous at the moment. Since coming over from the Phillies, Dominguez has produced an impressive 1.00 ERA, 0.78 WHIP and 10:3 K:BB through nine innings, and he's picked up the last two saves for the O's.

  • Kirby Yates RP | LAA

Rangers' Kirby Yates: Collects 21st save

Yates struck out one in a perfect 10th inning Wednesday to record his 21st save of the season in a 9-7 win over the Red Sox.

The veteran right-hander needed only nine pitches (seven strikes) to carve up the heart of the Boston order. Yates still has yet to blow a save chance in 2024, and since the beginning of July he's delivered a stellar 1.13 ERA, 0.75 WHIP and 25:6 K:BB through 16 innings.

  • Michael Tonkin RP | MIN

Yankees' Michael Tonkin: Secures three-inning save

Tonkin allowed two hits and struck out two without walking a batter over three innings to earn the save in Wednesday's 10-2 win over the White Sox.

The Yankees pulled ahead in the seventh inning and then rallied for more in the eighth, so Tonkin stayed in the game and ended up with his second save of the year. This was just his second scoreless appearance in nine outings since the All-Star break. He's added one hold this season while rarely featuring in high-leverage spots. Tonkin has a 3.21 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 63:22 K:BB over 61.2 innings between the Yankees, Mets and Twins in 2024.

  • Dominic Leone RP | CHW

White Sox's Dominic Leone: Exits with sore elbow

Leone was removed from Wednesday's game against the Yankees due to right elbow soreness, Vinnie Duber of AllCHGO.com reports.

Leone was only able to get through one-third of an inning before his elbow forced him out of the game, during which he gave up two earned runs on two hits and two walks. He'll head in for further evaluation Thursday, at which point the White Sox will have a better idea of how long the 32-year-old will be sidelined.

  • Josh Hader RP | HOU

Astros' Josh Hader: Grabs extra-inning win

Hader (5-6) struck out three over two scoreless and hitless innings to earn the extra-inning win over the Rays on Wednesday.

Bryan Abreu gave up the tying run in the eighth inning, but Hader was sterling in the ninth and 10th frames to extend his scoreless streak to 8.1 innings. He's allowed just three runs over his last 15.1 innings, all of which came in a single appearance July 29 versus the Pirates. Hader is at a 3.48 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 82:18 K:BB while converting 26 of 27 save chances through 54.1 innings this season.
