Thornton (4-7) earned the win over Baltimore on Thursday, hurling six innings and allowing one run on five hits and no walks while striking out two.

Thornton was coming off a 10-day stint on the injured list with right elbow inflammation but showed no signs of injury or rust, limiting the Orioles to six baserunners on five singles and a hit batsman while tossing 58 of 87 pitches for strikes. He was successful despite missing few bats, as he whiffed only two hitters and induced a mere six swinging strikes. The victory comes on the heels of a pair of rough post-break outings in which the rookie surrendered nine earned runs in 4.1 combined innings. Thornton now carries a 4-7 record along with a 5.23 ERA and 102:45 K:BB over 105 innings and is next scheduled for a road start against the Rays on Tuesday.

Abreu was optioned to Double-A Corpus Christi on Thursday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.

Abreu returns to the minors just one day after tossing a scoreless inning in his major-league debut Wednesday. The 22-year-old carries an ERA of 4.86 with a 92:38 K:BB in stops between High-A and Double-A this season. Zack Greinke, Aaron Sanchez and Joe Biagini were added to the major-league roster in a corresponding move.

Giles (elbow) played catch Thursday, Mike Wilner of Sportsnet 590 The Fan reports.

Manager Charlie Montoyo said Giles felt great in what was his first throwing session since receiving a cortisone shot in his elbow earlier in the week. The skipper noted Giles could return to action Sunday or Monday if all goes as planned over the next couple of days.

Adam had his contract selected from Triple-A Buffalo on Thursday.

Adam will provide the Blue Jays with bullpen insurance after the team traded away a pair of relievers in Daniel Hudson and Joe Biagini on Wednesday. The righty has made eight appearances with Buffalo since July 11, posting a 3.60 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 16:5 K:BB in 10 innings during that stretch.

Jimenez was recalled from Triple-A Toledo on Thursday.

Jimenez will fill the roster spot of Shane Greene, who was dealt to the Braves on Wednesday. In four appearances with the Tigers this season, Jimenez has allowed four runs on five hits and three walks while striking out two in 4.1 innings.

Thornton (elbow) was activated from the 10-day injured list ahead of his scheduled start Thursday against the Orioles.

As expected, Thornton is ready to rejoin the rotation after spending the minimum amount of time on the IL with right elbow inflammation. The right-hander will replace Ryan Borucki (elbow) -- who was sent back to the IL on Wednesday -- in the rotation. Thornton owns a 5.45 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 100:45 K:BB in 21 starts (99 innings) with the Blue Jays this season.

The Rays optioned De Leon to Triple-A Durham on Thursday, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports.

He'll cede his spot on the active roster and in the Tampa Bay bullpen to Nick Anderson, whom the Rays acquired from the Marlins on Wednesday. De Leon was recalled ahead of Wednesday's game against the Red Sox to give the Rays a fresh arm, but he ultimately went unused in the 8-5 win. The 26-year-old right-hander will thus have to wait a little longer before making his first big-league appearance since May 2017.

Mengden is expected to move to the Oakland bullpen or get optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas in the coming days after the Athletics acquired starting pitcher Tanner Roark from the Reds on Wednesday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Oakland tipped its hand on Mengden's likely removal from the rotation by passing him over for a start in Thursday's series finale with Milwaukee, even though he last pitched five days earlier. Instead, Homer Bailey will draw the nod for that contest, while an off day Friday will allow the Athletics to once again reorder their rotation. Since Roark should be ready to slot into the pitching schedule for the series with the Cubs early next week, the Athletics would be able to get by without Mengden having to make another start.

Colome was not traded and will continue to close games for the White Sox, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Colome was a popular name in trade speculation, but the trade deadline passed and he stayed with the White Sox. Since he can't become a free agent until after the 2020 season, there's a good chance he'll be closing games next season as well. He appeared in Wednesday's game against the Mets after the deadline passed, serving up three unearned runs on three hits and a walk while retiring two batters en route to suffering his second loss of the season.

Yarbrough (10-3) picked up the win in Wednesday's 8-5 victory over the Red Sox, allowing four runs on six hits over 4.1 innings of relief while striking out three.

The lefty wasn't really fooling anyone as Tampa's bulk reliever -- he served up as many homers as he generated swinging strikes (two) over 75 pitches -- but an offensive eruption from the Rays was enough to get Yarbrough his fifth straight winning decision despite the fact that he gave up more than one run in an outing for the first time since June 13. He now sports a 4.01 ERA and 65:12 K:BB through 85.1 innings on the year.
