Cleveland recalled Nelson from Triple-A Columbus to its major-league roster Saturday, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.

The reliever has pitched two scoreless innings with Cleveland this season and has allowed one earned run in 7.1 innings with Triple-A Columbus. Nelson fills the roster spot of Triston McKenzie, whom the team optioned Saturday.

The Mariners signed Jerez to a minor-league contract Saturday.

The lefty last pitched in the majors in 2019, when he posted a 4.35 ERA across 10.1 innings between the Giants and the Pirates. It's unclear if and when Jerez makes an appearance on the Mariners roster, but he'll provide some depth in a bullpen that's lacking many left-handed arms.

Kay didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 9-7 extra-innings loss to the Rays, allowing two runs on four hits and four walks over four innings while striking out four.

The southpaw got staked to an early lead but wasn't efficient enough to last the requisite five innings for a win even if the Jays had held onto it. Kay tossed 54 of 91 pitches for strikes before getting the hook, and his 6.62 ERA and 1.64 WHIP through 17.2 innings mark him as one of the likeliest candidates to lose his rotation spot once Toronto begins promoting pitchers like Alek Manoah.

Mayers (1-3) allowed three earned runs on four hits and two walks while striking out one across 1.1 innings Friday, taking the loss to the Athletics.

Mayers allowed a three-run home run to Chad Pinder in the seventh inning. The 29-year-old has been relied upon as one of the Angels' high-leverage relievers. He has received occasional save opportunities as Raisel Iglesias has struggled this season. However, Mayers has had his own struggles with a 5.48 ERA and a 1.59 WHIP across 21.1 innings, although he does carry an impressive 12.66 K/9.

Mejia pitched 2.1 scoreless innings Friday, allowing a hit with five strikeouts in a 10-0 loss to Minnesota.

Mejia ended the fourth inning, which saw Minnesota rack up nine runs. He then pitched in the fifth and sixth without trouble. The 24-year-old's last full season came with High-A Lynchburg in 2019, where he posted a 4.09 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 36:9 K:BB across 33 innings as a starter. Mejia will begin in the bullpen for Cleveland, but he could ultimately challenge Sam Hentges for the fifth starter role.

Maton allowed four runs on four hits and a walk over one-third of an inning in Friday's 10-0 loss to Minnesota.

The 28-year-old relieved Triston McKenzie in the fourth inning, but the reliever wasn't able to stop the bleeding. Maton now has a 7.62 ERA, 1.62 WHIP and 18:6 K:BB across 13 innings this year. He's given up nine runs in his last six outings, so the right-hander is unlikely to see high-leverage situations any time soon.

Abreu (2-3) allowed three runs (two earned) on a hit and a walk over 0.2 innings Friday, striking out one and taking a loss against Texas.

Abreu came into the 10th inning to protect a 5-4 lead and took the loss after serving up a walkoff three-run blast to Adolis Garcia. The 24-year-old has five holds this season but has blown all three of his save opportunities. His season ERA shot up to 4.18 through 23.2 innings.

Lopez (1-5) gave up two earned runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out eight in five innings Friday against the Nationals. He took the loss.

This was one of Lopez's best starts of the year, and it lowered his ERA from 6.35 to 6.00. This should buy him at least one more start next week, most likely in Minnesota on Wednesday.

Fulmer struck out one batter in a perfect ninth inning to earn a save against Kansas City on Friday.

Fulmer made quick work of the Royals while protecting a 7-5 lead, needing just 12 pitches to finish off the game. The 28-year-old righty has now converted all four of his save chances this season with all of them coming in May. He owns a 3.13 ERA and 30:8 K:BB through 31.2 innings this season.

Chapman (3-0) pitched a scoreless ninth inning Friday against the White Sox, allowing one walk with zero strikeouts while picking up the win.

He came on during a 1-1 game in the top of the ninth and Gleyber Torres walked it off in the bottom of the ninth, leaving Chapman as the pitcher of record. Chapman has been completely automatic this season, as he has yet to allow a run while striking out 36 in 18 innings.
