Criswell will be called up to start Friday against the Padres, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Criswell has made16 minor-league starts this season, most recently logging a 3.98 ERA and 27:6 K:BB across four outings with Triple-A Salt Lake. It will likely be a spot start for the right-hander, though a strong performance would go a long way to keeping him in the big leagues going forward.

Barraclough was optioned to Triple-A St. Paul on Friday.

The 31-year-old righty hasn't looked good in his three major-league appearances this season, allowing four runs in 3.1 innings of work. He's been far better in the minors, striking out 38.7 percent of opposing batters en route to a 3.00 ERA, but the struggling Twins may prioritize giving opportunities to younger players down the stretch.

Gibaut's contract was selected by the Twins on Friday.

Gibaut owns a career 6.08 ERA in 26.2 innings at the major-league level. He's spent the entirety of this season at the Triple-A level, where he owns an even worse 7.20 ERA. He'll likely be limited to low-leverage innings during his time with the team.

Howard (undisclosed) was placed on the COVID-19 injured list Friday.

The club announced earlier in the week that Howard was among the players who would be away from the team due to COVID-19 protocols, but they opted to wait until Friday to officially place him on the injured list. It's still not clear if Howard tested positive for the virus, so it remains to be seen if he'll miss more than one turn through the rotation. Glenn Otto was recalled to take Howard's roster spot, and he will start in his place Friday against the Astros.

Alcala (biceps) was activated off the injured list Friday.

Alcala had been out with biceps tendinitis since early August but is ready to go without making any rehab appearances. He struggled to a 5.11 ERA in 44 innings prior to the injury while allowing 10 homers, though his 1.09 WHIP provides reason for optimism if he can get the long balls under control.

Mills was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma on Friday.

Mills rejoined the Mariners' bullpen in late July but made just two relief appearances during his time with the major-league club. The right-hander allowed three runs on four hits and a walk while striking out three in 3.1 innings across his two outings, and his demotion will make room for left-hander Sean Doolittle on the active roster.

Otto was called up from Triple-A Round Rock ahead of his start Friday against the Astros.

The Rangers announced earlier in the week that Otto would start in place of Spencer Howard (undisclosed) and now the club has officially made room on the 26-man roster by placing Howard on the COVID-19 injured list. Otto will be making his major-league debut after posting a 3.20 ERA while logging 95.2 innings between Double-A and Triple-A this season.

Foley was recalled by the Tigers on Friday.

Foley made his first four major-league appearances earlier in the season, allowing two runs in five hits despite striking out just two batters. He didn't walk any opposing batters but hit three of them. Erasmo Ramirez was designated for assignment to clear a bullpen spot.

Peguero (0-1) took the loss against Baltimore on Thursday, pitching two-thirds of an inning and allowing five runs on two hits and three walks.

The right-hander received his first call-up to the majors Wednesday and made his debut Thursday. The outing did not go well, as Peguero threw only 16 of 31 pitches for strikes and issued three free passes. All five batters he allowed to reach base eventually came around to score, including three who crossed the plate after his departure. Peguero has been solid in the minors this season but may not stick around with the big club for long, especially if he's unable to consistently throw strikes.

Fairbanks (shoulder) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list ahead of Friday's game against the Orioles, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports.

Fairbanks landed on the injured list in late July with shoulder inflammation but was able to resume throwing shortly after. He began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Durham last Sunday and wound up allowing a solo homer while striking out two across a pair of one-inning outings. The 27-year-old has converted five of six save chances this season, and he will likely get more opportunities to close games down the stretch.
