Rays' Jalen Beeks: Opening duty again

Beeks is scheduled to serve as the Rays' opening pitcher in Monday's game at Cincinnati, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Beeks served as the opener last Monday against the Red Sox and will do so again in the series opener versus the Reds. The left-hander has allowed two earned runs on five hits with a 5:1 K:BB across six frames in four outings this season. Taj Bradley is a candidate to be called up from Triple-A Durham to follow Beeks as the primary pitcher.

  • Zack Kelly RP | BOS

Red Sox's Zack Kelly: Shifts to 60-day IL

Kelly (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Sunday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.

The 28-year-old is dealing with right elbow inflammation and recently had an MRI return negative for any structural damage, but he's still experiencing discomfort and will now be sidelined for at least the next two months. Kelly is likely to be shut down from throwing for a bit as he continues to be evaluated.

  • Red Sox's Brennan Bernardino: Claimed by Boston

Bernardino was claimed off waivers by the Red Sox and optioned to Triple-A Worcester on Sunday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.

Bernardino made his major-league debut last year but began the 2023 campaign at Triple-A Tacoma. He allowed eight runs on 13 hits and a walk while striking out 11 in six innings over two relief appearances to begin the season and will attempt to right the ship with his new club.

  • Ryan Brasier RP | TEX

Red Sox's Ryan Brasier: Picks up first save

Brasier picked up the save during Sunday's 2-1 win over the Angels, striking out one over a perfect ninth inning.

Kenley Jansen recorded saves Friday and Saturday, so he was likely unavailable Sunday, which allowed Brasier to get his first save opportunity. The right-hander was sharp and retired Zach Neto, Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani in order. After giving up three runs in his first outing of the season, Brasier has tossed a scoreless frame in seven of his past eight appearances, recording eight strikeouts during that stretch.

  • Orioles' Logan Gillaspie: Suffers first loss

Gillaspie (0-1) allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits without recording an out to take the extra-inning loss versus the White Sox on Saturday.

Gillaspie was called upon to protect a one-run lead in the bottom of the 10th inning. He instead gave up a game-tying RBI double to Yasmani Grandal before Oscar Colas knocked a walkoff single. Gillaspie has permitted a run in four of his last five outings, and he owns a 7.20 ERA, 2.20 WHIP and 5:3 K:BB over five innings this season.

  • Keegan Akin RP | BAL

Orioles' Keegan Akin: Expected back Tuesday

Orioles manager Brandon Hyde told reporters before Sunday's game against the White Sox that Akin (personal) is expected to come off the paternity list Tuesday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.

Akin will miss a total of three games while being away from the team. The left-hander will return to a middle-innings role in the Baltimore bullpen, and the team will need to send down a pitcher before the series against the Nationals begins.

  • Wyatt Mills RP | WAS

Red Sox's Wyatt Mills: Moves to 60-day IL

Mills (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Sunday.

Mills began the season on the injured list with right elbow inflammation and now won't be eligible to be activated until late May. The 28-year-old recently resumed throwing on flat ground, with the next major step in his rehab likely to be throwing off a mound.

  • Chris Martin RP | TEX

Red Sox's Chris Martin: Added to injured list

The Red Sox placed Martin on the 15-day injured list Sunday, retroactive to April 13, with right shoulder inflammation.

Martin underwent an MRI before Sunday's game against the Angels and the imaging revealed the inflammation. Jake Faria is replacing the right-hander in the bullpen after having his contract selected from Triple-A Worcester. Martin will be out at least two weeks, but a more realistic timeline should be presented in the coming days.

  • Andrew Wantz RP | CHC

Angels' Andrew Wantz: Rejoins big club

Wantz was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake on Sunday.

The 27-year-old was optioned to Salt Lake on Tuesday but will quickly rejoin the major-league club with Ryan Tepera (shoulder) headed to the injured list. Wantz has made three appearances for the Angels this season and has a 6:0 K:BB with just one hit allowed over five scoreless frames.

  • Chris Martin RP | TEX

Red Sox's Chris Martin: Undergoes MRI on arm

Martin underwent an MRI on his right arm and may be placed on the injured list before Sunday's game against the Angels, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.

Smith reports that Martin's MRI occurred on the biceps and shoulder area. The Red Sox are currently dealing with several injuries to their pitching staff, so even if the imaging comes back clean there's a good chance that the right-hander heads to the injured list.
