Cardinals' Matt Carpenter: Rehab assignment not imminent

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said Sunday that Carpenter (oblique) is still at least a few days away from starting his rehab assignment, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.

Carpenter took swings during batting practice both Friday and Saturday. Marmol noted that those sessions went well for Carpenter, but the veteran first baseman could need upwards of a week before beginning his rehab assignment. Carpenter has been on the Cardinals' 10-day IL since April 2 after straining his right oblique.

  • Jorge Soler DH | LAA

Giants' Jorge Soler: Lone run in blowout loss

Soler went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's 17-1 loss to the Diamondbacks.

The Giants had just four hits in the contests, with Soler's homer being the only one to produce a run for the home team. He's been strong lately, going 9-for-28 (.321) with two homers, one double, three RBI and four runs scored over his last eight games. The slugger is slashing .240/.341/.453 with four homers, six RBI and 12 runs scored over 21 contests to begin his Giants tenure.

  • DJ Stewart RF | PIT

Mets' DJ Stewart: Launches third homer

Stewart went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI in Friday's win over the Dodgers.

The 30-year-old drove a 96.3 mph fastball from Yoshinobu Yamamoto deep to right field in the second inning to open the scoring with a solo shot, then chipped in runs later in the contest with a sacrifice fly and a single. Stewart has hit safely in six of his last seven games, batting .368 (7-for-19) over that stretch with all three of his homers and all 10 of his RBI on the season. J.D. Martinez (back) will eventually join the roster as the full-time DH, but Stewart is doing what he can to prove he should remain in a prominent role once that happens.

  • Joc Pederson DH | TEX

Diamondbacks' Joc Pederson: Gets breather versus LHP

Pederson isn't in Arizona's lineup for Friday's game against the Giants.

Left-hander Blake Snell will toe the slab for San Francisco, so the lefty-hitting Pederson will take a seat Friday. Blaze Alexander will fill in as the Snakes' designated hitter while Kevin Newman starts at shortstop and bats ninth.

  • Matt Carpenter DH | STL

Cardinals' Matt Carpenter: Takes swings Friday

Carpenter (oblique) took swings during batting practice Friday, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.

Carpenter began taking infield practice last weekend, and Friday marks the first time the 38-year-old veteran has participated in batting practice. He remains without an official timeline for his activation, but he could head to the minors for a rehab assignment relatively soon if he's able to continue swinging without any issues.

  • Marcell Ozuna DH | PIT

Braves' Marcell Ozuna: Power surge continues Wednesday

Ozuna went 1-for-5 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 5-4 extra-inning win over the Astros.

The veteran slugger got Atlanta on the board in the second inning, leading off the frame by crushing a J.P. France sweeper 432 feet to left field. Ozuna is tied with Mike Trout for the MLB lead with eight homers, and Wednesday's blast extended his hitting streak to 16 games -- a stretch in which he's slashed .379/.431/.788 with 13 runs and 23 RBI, in addition to all eight long balls.

  • Joc Pederson DH | TEX

Diamondbacks' Joc Pederson: Homers in two straight

Pederson entered Wednesday's game as a pinch hitter and went 1-for-2 with a solo home run in 5-3 loss to the Cubs.

Pederson's ninth-inning blast closed the gap but was not enough for a Diamondbacks team that squandered opportunities with runners on base and made three errors. It was the second consecutive game with a home run for Pederson, who has hit safely in four of the last five contests. That stretch includes three of his four extra-base hits for the season. Pederson is slashing .333/.467/.576 over 46 plate appearances.

  • Kyle Schwarber DH | PHI

Phillies' Kyle Schwarber: Clubs pair of homers

Schwarber went 2-for-5 with a two-run home run and a solo home run during Wednesday's 7-6 win over the Rockies.

Schwarber notched his first multi-homer game of the season -- a feat he accomplished three times in the 2023 regular season -- with the solo homer coming off Ryan Feltner in the first inning and the two-run shot coming at the expense of Peter Lambert in the sixth. The performance came on the heels of three straight games without a hit (0-for-11), pushing Schwarber out of the mini-slump.

  • Joc Pederson DH | TEX

Diamondbacks' Joc Pederson: Sitting against lefty

Pederson is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cubs.

As usual, the lefty-hitting Pederson finds himself out of the lineup with the opposition bringing a southpaw (Jordan Wicks) to the hill. With Pederson on the bench, Blaze Alexander will serve as Arizona's designated hitter.

  • Kris Bryant RF | COL

Rockies' Kris Bryant: Lands on IL with lower-back strain

The Rockies placed Bryant on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with a low back strain.

The Rockies gave Bryant a few days to recover from the back issue with the hope that he could avoid the IL, but the organization ultimately decided that he required some more down time. Because the IL move is retroactive to Sunday, Bryant will be eligible for activation on April 24. However, there's no word yet as to whether he'll have a chance to be ready at that time. Sean Bouchard was called up from Triple-A Albuquerque to take Bryant's spot on the 26-man active roster.
