  • Will Smith C | LAD

Dodgers' Will Smith: Receives breather Tuesday

Smith is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Giants, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.

After starting the past two contests, Smith will head to the bench for Tuesday's game. Austin Barnes will work behind the plate in his absence.

  • Pirates' Jacob Stallings: Out of Tuesday's lineup

Stallings is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Diamondbacks.

Stallings is 5-for-12 with a grand slam in four games since the All-Star break and will head to the bench for the second time in the past three days. Michael Perez will work behind the plate in his place.

  • Austin Nola C | COL

Padres' Austin Nola: Could be activated over weekend

Manager Jayce Tingler said Tuesday that Nola (knee) could be activated from the 10-day injured list during the upcoming weekend series against the Marlins, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.

Tingler didn't provide a specific day for when the backstop could be reinstated, but the update suggests he could be activated as soon as Thursday's series opener. Nola has been out since May 24 with a left knee sprain, and he figures to resume sharing the catching duties with Victor Caratini when he returns.

  • Omar Narvaez C | HOU

Brewers' Omar Narvaez: Sits against southpaw

Narvaez will sit Tuesday against the Royals.

Narvaez has started just twice against a lefty all season, so it's no surprise to see him on the bench against Mike Minor here. Manny Pina starts behind the plate in his absence.

  • James McCann C | ARI

Mets' James McCann: Socks eighth homer

McCann went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI in Monday's 15-11 extra-innings win over the Reds.

The veteran catcher didn't enter the contest until the eighth inning, when he pinch hit for Tomas Nido, but McCann still supplied a full game's worth of production. The homer was his first in July and eighth of the year, but he's still putting together a decent month, slashing .278/.381/.361 over his last 13 games with four RBI and four runs.

  • Tres Barrera C | WAS

Nationals' Tres Barrera: Swats first homer

Barrera went 2-for-5 with a solo home run and another run scored during Monday's win over the Marlins.

Barrera collected his first career long ball with a 410-footer against Ross Detwiler in the second inning. The 26-year-old backstop has seen an uptick in playing time with Yan Gomes (oblique) and Alex Avila (calf) on the shelf. Across eight games so far, he's hitting .304/.360/.522.

  • Giants' Chadwick Tromp: Sent to minors

Tromp was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento on Monday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.

Tromp went 0-for-8 with two strikeouts in five games during his most recent stretch with the big-league club. He'll head back to the minors to make room for the return of Buster Posey (thumb) and Kevin Gausman (personal). Caleb Baragar was also demoted to Triple-A prior to Monday's contest against the Dodgers.

  • James McCann C | ARI

Mets' James McCann: Sitting second straight game

McCann is not in the lineup Monday against the Reds, Justin Toscano of The Bergen Record reports.

McCann received the day off Sunday after starting the first two games out of the All-Star break, and he now finds himself on the bench for the second straight contest while mired in a 4-for-22 slump over his past eight games. Nido will work behind the plate in his place Monday.

  • Reds' Tucker Barnhart: Not starting Monday

Barnhart is not in the lineup for Monday's game against the Mets.

Barnhart has the playing-time edge over Tyler Stephenson overall, starting 59 games behind the plate to Stephenson's 35 (with Stephenson starting an additional 13 at first base), but the pair appear to be converging lately. They've alternated starts over the last six games, which could mean Barnhart starts Tuesday before retreating to the bench again Wednesday.

  • Phillies' J.T. Realmuto: Enjoys big Sunday

Realmuto went 4-for-10 with a home run and four RBI between the Phillies' two games against the Marlins on Sunday.

The Phillies and Marlins didn't play a true doubleheader Sunday, as the first contest was a resumption of Saturday's game, which was suspended in the top of the 10th inning due to inclement weather. With the game tied 2-2 in the bottom of the 10th, Realmuto stepped up and provided a walkoff two-run home run, his ninth of the season. He then started behind the plate in Sunday's scheduled game and proceeded to rap out three base hits and drive in two more runs in the Phillies' 7-4 win. Realmuto has now reached base in each of his last 11 games, slashing .349/.429/.581 with two home runs and a stolen base over that stretch.
