    Cubs' Yan Gomes: Collects four hits Wednesday

    Gomes went 4-for-4 in Wednesday's 7-1 loss to the Reds.

    All four of the hits were singles, and Gomes was unable to drive anyone in or come around to score. The veteran started Wednesday with Willson Contreras (ankle) landing on the injured list Tuesday. Gomes should continue to start while Contreras is out with P.J. Higgins able to serve in a reserve role, though Higgins started at first base Wednesday.

    Gomes will start at catcher and bat seventh in Wednesday's game against the Reds.

    With Willson Contreras (ankle) landing on the injured list Tuesday, Gomes looks poised to serve as Chicago's No. 1 backstop for at least the next week. Gomes will pick up his fifth start in six games Wednesday after going 4-for-16 with a double, a stolen base and a run over the previous four contests.

  • Cubs' Willson Contreras: Sent in for MRI

    Contreras is scheduled to undergo an MRI on his injured left ankle Wednesday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.

    The Cubs placed Contreras on the 10-day injured list Tuesday, but the extent of his left ankle injury isn't yet known. The MRI should shed more light on the matter, and once the results are available, the Cubs will have a better idea regarding whether he'll be able to return from the IL when first eligible Sept. 13. Yan Gomes is expected to serve as the Cubs' No. 1 catcher in the interim.

    Marlins' Nick Fortes: Returns to bench

    Fortes is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Phillies, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.

    Fortes started in each of the past three games at either catcher or designated hitter, going 2-for-9 with three walks and a run. Jacob Stallings is getting the nod behind the plate Wednesday, while Avisail Garcia handles DH duties.

    Nationals' Keibert Ruiz: Gets Wednesday off

    Ruiz is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game agains the Cardinals.

    Riley Adams checks in behind the plate while Ruiz gets a well-deserved rest after catching each of the past five games. Ruiz produced six hits and two walks over the first four of those starts before an 0-for-4 showing in Tuesday's 4-1 loss.

    Giants' Joey Bart: Not in Wednesday's lineup

    Bart isn't starting Wednesday against the Dodgers, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

    Bart returned to the lineup Tuesday and went 1-for-3 with two strikeouts. He'll head to the bench a day later while Austin Wynns starts behind the dish and bats eighth.

    Contreras isn't starting Wednesday against the Athletics.

    Contreras went 0-for-2 with a run, an RBI, two walks and a strikeout Tuesday but will head to the bench for the fourth time in the last six games. Ronald Acuna is serving as the designated hitter and leading off.

    Smith isn't in the lineup Wednesday against the Giants, Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports.

    Smith went 0-for-4 during Tuesday's win over San Francisco and will head to the bench for the second time in the last three games. Austin Barnes is taking over behind the dish and batting ninth.

    Narvaez is not in the starting lineup for Wednesday's series finale with the Rockies.

    Narvaez will take a seat after he went 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI in Tuesday's loss. Victor Caratini is starting at catcher and batting eighth against Colorado.

    Pirates' Jason Delay: Riding pine for matinee

    Delay isn't starting the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Mets.

    Delay recorded hits in his last two games, going 2-for-6 with two runs, an RBI, a walk and a strikeout over that stretch. Tyler Heineman will start behind the plate and bat ninth during Wednesday's matinee.
