Dodgers' Will Smith: Pops 10th homer

Smith went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Tuesday's 5-1 win over the White Sox.

Smith opened the scoring in the first inning, and that was ultimately all the Dodgers needed for the win. The catcher has been a little shaky at the plate lately, going 9-for-38 (.237) over his last 11 games, though he has three homers and seven RBI in that span. For the season, he owns a .290/.393/.521 slash line with 10 long balls, 35 RBI, 32 runs scored and a stolen base over 48 contests. He remains a consistent presence in the heart of the order when he plays.

  • Gary Sanchez C | MIL

Padres' Gary Sanchez: Blasts sixth homer

Sanchez went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run in Tuesday's 6-3 win over the Guardians.

Sanchez's first-inning blast was enough to put the Padres ahead for good. The catcher has seen the ball well lately, going 7-for-29 (.241) with four homers and 11 RBI over his last seven contests. He's up to six long balls, 16 RBI, nine runs scored, two doubles and a .245/.281/.623 slash over 16 contests between the Padres and the Mets this season. His solid hitting with San Diego has allowed him to take a starting role over Austin Nola.

  • Nick Fortes C | TB

    Marlins' Nick Fortes: Sitting Tuesday

Fortes isn't starting Tuesday against the Mariners, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.

After going 1-for-3 with a home run during Monday's loss, Fortes will get a day off Tuesday. In his place, Jacob Stallings will get the nod behind the plate and bat eighth.

  • Dodgers' Austin Barnes: Remains out of lineup

Barnes (wrist) remains out of the lineup Tuesday versus the White Sox.

Barnes hasn't appeared in a game for the Dodgers since taking a fastball off his right wrist Thursday. Will Smith is catching and batting third in Tuesday night's series opener against Chicago.

  • Diamondbacks' Gabriel Moreno: Sitting again Tuesday

Moreno is not in the lineup Tuesday versus the Phillies.

Carson Kelly will make a second straight start at catcher for the Diamondbacks after returning Monday from the 60-day injured list. Moreno has posted a relatively underwhelming .281/.318/.366 batting line with two homers and three steals through 52 games this year.

  • Brewers' William Contreras: Sitting Tuesday

Contreras is not in the starting lineup Tuesday versus the Twins.

Contreras will get a breather after he went 1-for-9 while a solo homer and two runs scored while starting twice over the team's three-game series with the Athletics. Victor Caratini will catch for Corbin Burnes and bat eighth in the series opener with Minnesota.

  • Sean Murphy C | ATL

Braves' Sean Murphy: Gets breather Tuesday

Murphy is on the bench Tuesday against Detroit.

This looks to be a routine day of rest for Murphy, who caught all 10 innings in Monday's series-opening loss. Travis d'Arnaud is catching and batting cleanup for Atlanta on Tuesday.

  • Nick Fortes C | TB

Marlins' Nick Fortes: Connects on fourth home run

Fortes went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Monday's 8-1 loss to Seattle.

Fortes continues to operate as Miami's top catcher, but he's appeared in just 45 of the team's first 67 games. His offensive production has been sporadic, and he had just three hits over his first seven June games before hitting his fourth homer of the season Monday. Overall, he's slashing .231/.280/.328 with 13 RBI and 16 runs scored, but his effort on defense will presumably keep him locked into semi-regular starts.

  • Phillies' J.T. Realmuto: Hits for cycle in loss

Realmuto went 4-for-4 with a home run, a triple, a double, three RBI and two additional runs scored in Monday's 9-8 loss to the Diamondbacks.

Realmuto broke out of a minor slump by having his best game of the season, hitting for the cycle while setting new single-game highs in hits and RBI for the 2023 campaign. Even after the big night, Realmuto's batting average is still sitting at .256, which would be his lowest since his rookie season in 2014. He's tied with Daulton Varsho for the lead in steals (nine) among catcher-eligible players.

  • Diamondbacks' Gabriel Moreno: Sitting Monday

Moreno is not in the starting lineup Monday versus the Phillies.

Moreno will take a seat after he went 2-for-7 with a double and a run scored while striking out twice over the final two games of the team's series in Detroit. Carson Kelly (forearm) was activated from the 60-day injured list Monday and will start at catcher, batting seventh in the series opener with Philadelphia. Moving forward, Moreno seems likely to get the lion's share of reps behind the plate, though that could change if he cools down or Kelly goes on a heater.
