Santana went 1-for-5 with a double, three RBI and a run scored in Wednesday's 8-6 win over the Nationals.

The Guardians were held in check for the first five innings, but they eventually solved Washington starter Michael Soroka the third time through the lineup. Cleveland scored all eight of its runs in the sixth inning, when Santana kicked off the scoring with a three-run double. It was the second straight game with three RBI for Santana, who has driven home nine over the last six contests.

Gonzalez was pulled from Wednesday's game against the Rangers due to back stiffness, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.

Manager Alex Cora said after the game that the 28-year-old infielder is fine after his collision with Texas' Josh Smith, though Gonzalez's back stiffened up on him following the incident. The Red Sox may elect to hold him out of Thursday's series finale as a precaution, though Gonzalez should avoid an extended absence.

Gonzalez was removed from Wednesday's game against the Rangers after a collision with Josh Smith, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.

Gonzalez was down on the ground for a few minutes immediately after running into Smith, but the former was able to walk it off. He then jogged out to play first base for the top of the seventh inning but was quickly called back into the dugout in favor of Abraham Toro. The fact Gonzalez was willing to go back out on defense is an encouraging sign that his removal was precautionary, but the Red Sox should offer some clarity in the near future.

Aranda is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Phillies, Ryan Bass of FanDuel Sports Network Sun reports.

The lefty-hitting Aranda will head to the bench while the Phillies send southpaw Cristopher Sanchez to the mound Wednesday. Aranda isn't in a strict platoon at first base, though he's now sat in three of the Rays' last four matchups with lefties.

Caglianone went 3-for-4 with two home runs, four RBI and a strikeout in Tuesday's game for Double-A Northwest Arkansas.

Caglianone has now homered in three straight games and is up to eight homers in 28 games. He is slashing .330/.406/.606 with an 11.7 percent walk rate, a 23.4 percent strikeout rate and a 39.4 percent hard-hit rate. Caglianone's last two starts have come at his natural position of first base, but he has picked up four starts in right field in the last two weeks in an effort to open up another path to 2025 playing time with the big club.

Kurtz is not in the lineup for Wednesday's contest against the Mariners.

It's Kurtz's second day off since his promotion in late April and the first time he's been out of the lineup against a right-hander. The rookie has been better so far in May (.278/.417/.389, 7:5 K:BB) after a sluggish April (.250/.240/.250, 12:0 K:BB) but is still looking for his first major-league home run. Tyler Soderstrom is handling first base Wednesday for the Athletics while Seth Brown patrols left field.

Toro started at first base and went 1-for-3 in Tuesday's 6-1 loss to the Rangers.

It was mostly a good night for Toro, who made his first start since having his contract selected from Triple-A Worcester last Saturday. He was involved in an unassisted double play early and later roped an opposite-field single off the Green Monster, though he was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double. Romy Gonzalez had started the two previous games at first base in place of the injured Triston Casas (knee) before Toro got his shot Tuesday. For now, there are no plans to move Rafael Devers from DH to first base, so it looks like manager Alex Cora will make do with a Toro/Gonzalez rotation.

Soderstrom went 3-for-5 with a double in Tuesday's 5-3 loss to the Mariners.

Soderstrom has opened May going 8-for-25 (.320) over six games. It's been mostly an empty average so far this month -- he's added one RBI, one stolen base and three runs scored, and his double Tuesday was his first extra-base hit of the month. Overall, Soderstrom is at a .291/.353/.525 slash line with nine home runs, 25 RBI, 23 runs scored, two stolen bases and six doubles over 37 contests. He's already matched or surpassed many of his totals from 61 games in 2024, so this could end up being a breakout year for the 23-year-old.

Santana went 4-for-9 with a walk, a home run, three RBI and four runs scored across both games of Tuesday's doubleheader split with the Nationals.

The 39-year-old was productive in both contests, rattling off three singles and scoring twice in the matinee before launching a three-run homer off Brad Lord in the sixth inning of the nightcap. Santana is slashing .236/.329/.350 through 34 games this season with four homers, two steals, 13 RBI and 18 runs.

Gonzalez is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Rangers, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.

The 28-year-old started the past two games at first base in the wake of Triston Casas' knee injury, but Abraham Toro will make his first start of the season Tuesday. Gonzalez has a .327/.382/.449 slash line with six RBI and three steals through 55 plate appearances this season, and he's likely to operate as Boston's primary first baseman as long as he continues to carry a hot bat.
