Red Sox's Abraham Toro: Shifts to third base

Toro started at third base and went 1-for-4 in Monday's 7-6 loss to the Angels.

Toro, who had been the regular starter at first base, shifted to third base while Romy Gonzalez, fresh off the injured list, started at first. Toro is batting .306 with an .822 OPS over 19 games since his contract was selected from Triple-A Worcester. The two could share the position going forward after Red Sox manager Alex Cora scrapped a plan to give Kristian Campbell starts there.

  • Romy Gonzalez 2B | BOS

Red Sox's Romy Gonzalez: Shines in return to lineup

Gonzalez went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI during Monday's 7-6 loss to the Angels.

Out since May 7 with a quad injury, Gonzalez showed just what the Red Sox have been missing in the last month, coming through with a big two-run double in the fifth that pulled Boston within a run and brought his RBI total to eight on the year. The 28-year-old picked up right where he left off after his good start to the season, now slashing .316/.365/.439 in 63 plate appearances.

  • Tigers' Spencer Torkelson: Out of Monday's lineup

Torkelson is not in the lineup for Monday's game against the White Sox.

Torkelson appears to be getting a routine day off. Colt Keith will start at first base and bat sixth for the Tigers in Monday's series opener.

  • Romy Gonzalez 2B | BOS

Red Sox's Romy Gonzalez: Activated from injured list

The Red Sox activated Gonzalez (quad) from the 10-day injured list Monday.

Gonzalez needed only two rehab games with Triple-A Worcester in order to convince the Red Sox he was ready to go. The utility player will be thrown back into the first-base mix for Boston, likely sharing the position with Abraham Toro.

  • Royals' Jac Caglianone: Added to major-league roster

The Royals selected Caglianone's contract from Triple-A Omaha on Monday.

Caglianone's promotion is official and he will make his major-league debut Tuesday in St. Louis. The 22-year-old earned a call-up after slashing .322/.389/.593 with 15 home runs and two stolen bases over 50 games between Double-A Northwest Arkansas and Omaha. Caglianone is expected to see most of his playing time in right field for the Royals, but he can also handle first base.

  • Royals' Jac Caglianone: Heading to big leagues

The Royals plan to call up Caglianone from Triple-A Omaha ahead of Tuesday's game in St. Louis, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.

Caglianone will complete his rapid ascent to the big leagues after getting selected with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft and beginning the 2025 campaign with Double-A Northwest Arkansas. The 22-year-old combined to slash .322/.389/.593 with 15 home runs and two stolen bases over 50 games between Northwest Arkansas and Omaha. Though he's expected to settle in at first base or designated hitter in the long term, Caglianone's initial big-league playing time may come in either corner-outfield spot, where the Royals have struggled to generate production this season. Caglianone looks to be a must-add option in nearly every redraft league due to his power potential alone.

  • Nick Sogard 3B | BOS

Red Sox's Nick Sogard: Demoted to Triple-A

The Red Sox optioned Sogard to Triple-A Worcester on Sunday.

Sogard's demotion comes after Abraham Toro supplanted him as the Red Sox's preferred option at first base. Though he had an opportunity to claim an everyday role after Triston Casas (knee) suffered a season-ending injury and Romy Gonzalez (quadriceps) went on the injured list as well, Sogard slashed just .245/.302/.306 over 53 plate appearances with the big club. Boston called up utility player Nate Eaton from Worcester to replace Sogard on the 26-man roster.

  • Romy Gonzalez 2B | BOS

Red Sox's Romy Gonzalez: Begins rehab assignment

Gonzalez (quadriceps) started at first base and went 0-for-3 for Triple-A Worcester on Saturday,

Gonzalez played six innings in the field to kick off his rehab assignment. He'll start as the designated hitter for the WooSox on Sunday, per MLB.com, and could be activated as early as Monday. Gonzalez will give Boston another option at first base alongside Abraham Toro.

  • Abraham Toro 1B | BOS

Red Sox's Abraham Toro: Settling in at first base

Toro will start at first base and bat cleanup in Sunday's game against Atlanta.

Toro appears to have emerged as the Red Sox's preferred option at first base. He'll pick up his third straight start at the position after going 4-for-7 with a double, an RBI and a run through the first two contests in Atlanta to boost his OPS to .833 over 54 plate appearances on the season. Toro will need to continue to perform well to maintain his hold on an everyday role, however. Romy Gonzalez (quadriceps) could return from the 10-day injured list later this week to push Toro for playing time, while Kristian Campbell has taken pregame reps at first base in recent weeks and could soon make his debut at the position.

  • Nick Kurtz 1B | ATH

Athletics' Nick Kurtz: Week away from running

Kurtz (hamstring) is expected to begin running the bases June 7, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

Kurtz suffered a hamstring injury May 25 while running the bases. It sounds like his return from the injured list may not come until later in June, as he'll likely need a rehab stint after he is able to run full speed again.
