Braves' Grant Holmes: Limits Cubs in no-decision

Holmes did not factor into the decision Tuesday against the Cubs, allowing two runs on one hit and four walks while striking out five over four innings.

Holmes looked strong through three innings, allowing only one baserunner, before faltering in the fourth. The only hit he allowed all day came in the inning, a solo homer by Alex Bregman, and he immediately unraveled afterward by issuing three straight walks to load the bases before allowing an RBI groundout. The right-hander has had trouble working deep into games lately, failing to complete six innings in four of his last five starts while also surrendering five home runs during that stretch. Holmes now owns a 4.35 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and a 34:21 K:BB across 41.1 innings and is scheduled to face Boston next.

  • Colin Rea SP | CHC

Cubs' Colin Rea: Unravels in rough fifth inning

Rea (4-2) took the loss Tuesday against Atlanta, allowing five runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out one over 4.1 innings.

Rea cruised through the first four innings, limiting Atlanta to just three hits before everything fell apart in the fifth. Austin Riley opened the inning with a home run on the first pitch, and Mike Yastrzemski later added a two-run shot as Atlanta quickly flipped the game. Rea was pulled with two runners aboard, one of whom later came around to score. Prior to Tuesday, the veteran right-hander had allowed two or fewer runs in six of his eight starts, making this outing less alarming. Rea now owns a 4.68 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 36:13 K:BB across 42.1 innings and is scheduled to face the White Sox next.

  • Brandon Nimmo CF | TEX

Rangers' Brandon Nimmo: Exits with ankle injury

Nimmo was removed from Tuesday's game against the Diamondbacks with a left ankle injury, Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Nimmo rolled his ankle while legging out an infield single in the sixth inning. He attempted to remain in the game but was eventually pulled before the end of the frame. The Rangers will presumably send the 33-year-old in for further testing, and Sam Haggerty would likely be in line to start in the outfield if Nimmo needs to miss a game or two.

  • Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Exits early Tuesday

Alvarez was removed from Tuesday's game against the Tigers with a right knee injury.

Alvarez went 1-for-2 with an RBI double and a run Tuesday but limped off the field after taking an aggressive swing at a pitch in the sixth inning. The severity of his injury will become known after he undergoes imaging Wednesday, and if he has to miss any amount of time, Luis Torrens would be in line for extra starts at catcher.

  • Lars Nootbaar CF | STL

Cardinals' Lars Nootbaar: Nearing rehab assignment

Nootbaar (heels) will begin a rehab assignment over the weekend, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Nootbaar is expected to begin playing his rehab games at Single-A Palm Beach before advancing to higher-level affiliates in what will be a lengthy assignment similar to spring training. Assuming he doesn't encounter any setbacks, he figures to make his season debut with the Cardinals in late May or early June.

  • Casey Mize SP | DET

Tigers' Casey Mize: Faces hitters Monday

Mize (thigh) threw live batting practice Monday, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.

Mize began throwing bullpen sessions over the weekend, and his quick return to facing live hitters keeps him on track for a brief stay on the injured list. The 29-year-old righty will be eligible to return from his right calf strain Thursday.

  • Will Vest RP | DET

Tigers' Will Vest: Throwing off mound

Vest (forearm) threw a bullpen session Monday, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.

It was the first time Vest had thrown off a mound since landing on the injured list May 2 with forearm inflammation. He'll be eligible to return from the IL on Thursday, though he's likely to throw a few additional bullpen and live batting practice sessions before being activated.

  • Matt Chapman 3B | SF

Giants' Matt Chapman: Getting rest Tuesday

Chapman isn't in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Dodgers.

Chapman will catch a breather Tuesday after going 0-for-4 with an RBI and two strikeouts during Monday's series opener. His absence will allow Casey Schmitt to start at the hot corner while Bryce Eldridge starts at first base.

  • Giants' Jesus Rodriguez: Taking seat Tuesday

Rodriguez isn't in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Dodgers.

Rodriguez has settled into a regular role behind the plate for San Francisco, but he'll step out of the starting nine Tuesday after going 0-for-4 with an RBI and a steal in Monday's contest. Eric Haase will handle catching duties and bat ninth.

  • Alex Verdugo LF | SD

Alex Verdugo: Likely out for season

Verdugo has a shoulder injury that will likely require surgery and keep him out for the rest of 2026, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

With the updated injury news, Verdugo was also released by the Padres on Monday. Verdugo was signed by the Padres to a minor-league contract at the beginning of March and seemingly suffered the shoulder injury near the end of spring training.
