  • Pirates' Lake Bachar: Slated to start Sunday

Pirates manager Don Kelly said that Bachar will start Sunday's game against the Red Sox at PNC Park, Colin Beazley of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Paul Skenes had been slated to take the hill for the series finale with Boston, but the Pirates will instead push their struggling ace back a few days in the pitching schedule and insert Bachar as a spot starter. The 31-year-old right-hander previously made four starts for the Marlins but has made all four of his appearances out of the bullpen since the Pirates acquired him Aug. 3. Bachar will be pitching on three days' rest after covering three innings and tossing 46 pitches in relief during Wednesday's 8-2 loss to Miami. He'll be operating with a limited pitch count Sunday and is unlikely to work deep enough into the contest to qualify for a win.

  • Pirates' Lake Bachar: Traded to Pirates

The Pirates acquired Bachar from the Marlins on Monday in exchange for Brandan Bidois, Hyun Seung Lee and Brian Sanchez. Bachar has logged a 3.84 ERA and 61:21 K:BB over 58.2 frames out of the Marlins' bullpen this season. The 31-year-old reliever will offer the Pirates the ability to cover multiple innings, and he is under team control through 2030.

  • Marlins' Lake Bachar: Earns win in relief

Bachar (1-0) earned the win Friday against the A's after tossing two perfect innings, striking out one. Bachar recorded his his first win after needing just 24 pitches (14 strikes) to record six outs. The righty has given up just three runs across 11 appearances (18.1 innings) since the beginning of June, posting a 1.47 ERA and 0.87 WHIP over that span.

  • Marlins' Lake Bachar: Getting start for bullpen game

Bachar will serve as the Marlins' opener in a bullpen game Friday against the Giants, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Rather than calling up a starter from the minors after Janson Junk (shin) joined Eury Perez (thigh) on the injured list May 31, the Marlins have been going with bullpen days when the fifth spot in the rotation has come around. Bachar will pick up his fourth start in that time, but he hasn't worked more than three innings in any of those outings. Dax Fulton, who threw 39 pitches Tuesday against the Phillies, might be called upon to work bulk relief behind Bachar.

  • Marlins' Lake Bachar: Opening Saturday

Bachar will serve as the Marlins' opening pitcher during Saturday's game against the Rays, Daniel Alvarez-Montes of ElExtraBase.com reports. Bachar pitched 2.2 shutout innings when the Marlins last relied on him to work as an opener Tuesday in Washington, so they'll give him another opening assignment during Saturday's contest. It's unknown whether Miami will use a bulk reliever behind Bachar or treat the game as a bullpen day.

  • Marlins' Lake Bachar: Fans three as Tuesday's opener

Bachar tossed 2.2 scoreless innings as Tuesday's opener against the Nationals. He struck out three batters and walked one without allowing a hit. Bachar kicked off a bullpen day for the Marlins in what was the second major-league start of his career, and he answered the call by keeping the Nationals off the board. It was a nice bounce-back performance from his last outing Saturday against the Mets, when he gave up three runs on four hits across two innings. Bachar has a 3.45 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 35:11 K:BB across 31.1 innings this season.

  • Marlins' Lake Bachar: Shining in low-leverage role

Bachar struck out two over two perfect innings of relief in Thursday's loss to the Twins. The right-hander entered the game for the sixth inning with the Marlins down 6-0, breezing through two frames on 23 pitches (16 strikes). Bachar has an impressive 2.05 ERA, 0.77 WHIP and 25:7 K:BB through 22 innings over 13 appearances, but he has zero wins or saves and just one hold to show for it as he remains in a low-leverage role.

  • Marlins' Lake Bachar: Survives for third save

Bachar allowed one run on a hit and two walks and picked up the save in Sunday's 5-4 win against Philadelphia. He struck out two. The 30-year-old righty worked around three baserunners to notch his first save since Aug. 6. Bachar conceded a run on a Kyle Schwarber single after issuing two free passes earlier in the frame. This save appears to have been an anomaly for Bachar, as usual closer Calvin Faucher was deployed in the sixth (and allowed two runs) in this bullpen game for Miami. The Marlins bullpen has been a puzzle all season, so if the team strays from Faucher as the main saves option, Bachar, with his 4.04 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 9.7 K/9 across 62.1 innings, could enter the mix.

  • Marlins' Lake Bachar: Serving as opener Monday

Bachar will serve as the Marlins' opening pitcher for Monday's game against the Nationals. Bachar has tossed more than three innings in any of his 46 appearances between the majors and minors this season and hasn't covered more than two frames since the All-Star break, so he'll likely be in line to face just a handful of batters before exiting his first career MLB start. The Marlins are likely to treat Monday's contest as a bullpen day and will rely on a cadre of relievers to fill innings once Bachar is removed from the game.

  • Marlins' Lake Bachar: Secures second save

Bachar allowed one hit and no walks in a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save Wednesday against the Astros. He struck out one. The Marlins' closer picture remains a mess. Calvin Faucher worked the eighth inning in a 6-4 game Wednesday, which allowed Bachar to enter for the ninth and nab his second save of the year, both of which have come since the start of July. It's difficult to gauge if Bachar will see additional save opportunities given how Clayton McCullough has managed his bullpen this season, but Faucher likely remains the favorite to handle those situations. That said, Bachar is clearly in the mix with a 3.22 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 57:22 K:BB through 50.1 innings.

  • Marlins' Lake Bachar: On paternity list

The Marlins placed Bachar on the paternity list Friday. Bachar will miss up to three games to attend to personal matters. Freddy Tarnok was recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville in a corresponding move. Bachar has a 3.15 ERA and a 48:21 K:BB across 45.2 innings of relief in 2025.

  • Marlins' Lake Bachar: Picks up first save

Bachar didn't allow a baserunner or strike out a batter in the ninth inning to earn the save Saturday against the Brewers. Calvin Faucher and Ronny Henriquez pitched the seventh and eighth innings of a 2-2 game, and Bachar was called upon for the save chance after Miami scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth. The right-hander has been a reliable bullpen option for Miami this year with a 3.29 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 42:21 K:BB over 41 innings, and he hasn't been scored upon in his past 11.1 frames. Bachar isn't likely to see regular save chances but could get the occasional opportunity when Miami's top arms have already been used or are unavailable.

  • Marlins' Lake Bachar: Sent to minors

The Marlins optioned Bachar to Triple-A Jacksonville on Saturday. Bachar gave the Marlins 2.2 innings out of the bullpen and allowed one run during Friday's contest, dropping his ERA to 4.73 through 26.2 frames on the year. In an effort to keep their bullpen stocked with fresh arms, the Marlins will now send him back to Triple-A in favor of Janson Junk, though Bachar could still return to Miami before the end of the year.

  • Marlins' Lake Bachar: Nabs third hold

Bachar walked one in a scoreless inning of relief Friday to record his third hold of the season in a 7-4 loss to the Nationals. The 29-year-old righty continues to have trouble finding the plate consistently -- he's got a 7:6 K:BB through nine innings this season -- but Bachar has mostly avoided paying for it, posting a 2.00 ERA and 0.78 WHIP. He's appeared in seven of the Marlins' first 13 games, and the team's bullpen is enough of a mess that Bachar could work his way into the high-leverage mix despite stuff that would be better suited in middle relief.

  • Marlins' Lake Bachar: Recalled from Triple-A

The Marlins recalled Bachar from Triple-A Jacksonville on Saturday. Bachar was sent to Triple-A after being claimed off waivers from San Diego on Tuesday, and he'll now join the big-league squad after just four days with his new organization. The 29-year-old righty owns a 3.86 ERA and 1.46 WHIP across 74.2 innings in the minors this season, and he'll be making his MLB debut whenever he gets into a game.

  • Marlins' Lake Bachar: Claimed by Miami

The Marlins claimed Bachar off waivers from the Padres on Tuesday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Bachar was designated for assignment by the Padres over the weekend without having made an appearance with the big club. The 29-year-old right-hander has collected a 3.89 ERA and 85:32 K:BB over 71.2 innings this season at Triple-A El Paso.

  • Padres' Lake Bachar: Booted off 40-man roster

The Padres designated Bachar for assignment Sunday. The right-hander was optioned to Triple-A El Paso on Monday and has now lost his place on the 40-man roster. Bachar received his first big-league call-up in August but has yet to make his MLB debut.

  • Padres' Lake Bachar: Heads back to Triple-A

The Padres optioned Bachar to Triple-A El Paso on Monday. The 29-year-old right-handed reliever received his first MLB call-up Sunday but didn't get the chance to make his Padres debut in the club's 3-2 win over the Mets before being sent back to Triple-A a day later. The Padres recalled right-hander Randy Vasquez from Triple-A in a corresponding move, and he'll start Monday's series opener in St. Louis.

  • Padres' Lake Bachar: Added to 40-man roster

The Padres selected Bachar's contract Friday and optioned him to Triple-A El Paso, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Bachar exercised an opt-out clause in his minor-league deal with San Diego on Thursday, giving the team 24 hours to add him to their 40-man roster. Rather than lose the 29-year-old in free agency, the Padres will award him a roster spot, though he will remain in El Paso for now. Bachar owns a 4.06 ERA and 1.45 WHIP through 57.2 innings in his first season at the Triple-A level.
