  • Pirates' Andrew McCutchen: Resting up Wednesday

McCutchen is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Orioles.

McCutchen will receive a breather after he had served as the Pirates' designated hitter in the team's last two games while going 2-for-8 with a double, an RBI and a run. Tommy Pham will get a break from playing the outfield Wednesday and will settle into the DH spot.

  • Edmundo Sosa 2B | PHI

    Phillies' Edmundo Sosa: Idle Wednesday

Sosa is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Mets.

Sosa will hit the bench Wednesday and give way to Bryson Stott at shortstop after he had started in the first two games of the series, going 2-for-7 with a double and a run. Despite his absence from the lineup, the 29-year-old Sosa still projects to draw the bulk of the starts at shortstop while Trea Turner (hamstring) is on the mend.

  • Brandon Marsh LF | PHI

Phillies' Brandon Marsh: Rejoining lineup Wednesday

Marsh (illness) will start in left field and bat fifth in Wednesday's game against the Mets.

He had been held out of the lineup the last two contests while managing an illness, but Marsh appears to have shaken the ailment and will draw back into the starting nine as the Phillies go for a third straight win. The 27-year-old had been wielding a hot bat prior to falling ill, going 10-for-19 with four extra-base hits and three walks through his first five contests of September.

  • Mets' Cedric Mullins: Out against lefty again

Mullins is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Phillies.

The left-handed-hitting Mullins will stay on the bench for the second game in a row while the Mets go up against another Phillies southpaw (Cristopher Sanchez). Jose Siri will cover center field in Mullins' stead.

  • Marlins' Agustin Ramirez: Rare day off Wednesday

Ramirez is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Nationals.

It seems like a good time for a breather for Ramirez, who is just 4-for-31 with zero extra-base hits so far this month. Liam Hicks will do the catching and Heriberto Hernandez will be the designated hitter for the Marlins.

  • Brett Baty 3B | NYM

Mets' Brett Baty: Sitting again versus lefty

Baty is not in the lineup for Wednesday's contest in Philadelphia.

The left-handed-hitting Baty has now been out of the lineup each of the last five times the Mets have faced a southpaw. He hadn't previously been in a strict platoon, but the Mets are changing things up as they hope to awaken a dormant offense. Mark Vientos will play third base Wednesday while Starling Marte occupies the designated hitter slot.

  • Jeff McNeil 2B | ATH

Mets' Jeff McNeil: Out of Wednesday's lineup

McNeil is absent from the lineup for Wednesday's game in Philadelphia.

McNeil had started each of the previous 10 contests for the Mets but will begin Wednesday's game on the bench. Luisangel Acuna will man second base and bat ninth.

  • Dominic Smith DH | ATL

Giants' Dominic Smith: Taking seat against southpaw

Smith is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Diamondbacks, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

The left-handed-hitting Smith started in each of the Giants' last five games while the team went up against right-handed starting pitchers, but he'll bow out of the lineup for the series finale with southpaw Eduardo Rodriguez on the bump for Arizona. Smith's absence from the starting nine clears the way for Wilmer Flores to fill in at first base.

  • Padres' Xander Bogaerts: Resumes light baseball activities

Bogaerts (foot) has resumed light baseball activities this week, MLB.com reports.

Bogaerts is just under two weeks removed from suffering a non-displaced fracture in his left foot, so he will be eased along slowly. The Padres are hopeful of getting their shortstop back in late September or early October, so Bogaerts will probably play only in the last few regular-season games in a best-case scenario. Jose Iglesias has been filling in at shortstop for San Diego.

  • Drew Gilbert CF | SF

Giants' Drew Gilbert: Sitting after six straight starts

Gilbert is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Diamondbacks, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Though the left-handed-hitting Gilbert will retreat to the bench as the Diamondbacks send lefty Eduardo Rodriguez to the hill, the rookie appears to have overtaken Luis Matos as San Francisco's preferred option in right field. While the Giants faced right-handers in each of the previous six contests, Matos started just twice while Gilbert was included in the lineup on all six occasions. Over his last 10 games, Gilbert has slashed .353/.395/.706 with seven extra-base knocks, three walks, 10 RBI and nine runs.
