  • Jose Ferrer RP | SEA

Nationals' Jose Ferrer: Collects third save

Ferrer gave up a hit in a scoreless ninth inning Wednesday to record his third save of the season in a 5-4 win over the Mets.

The southpaw was able to erase a one-out single by Cedric Mullins with a game-ending double play thanks to a 97.9 mph sinker. Ferrer has pocketed three of the Nationals' four saves in August, with Cole Henry notching the fourth, and the former is the clear top option for closing duties in the bullpen. Over 17.1 innings since the beginning of July, Ferrer has posted a 2.08 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 15:2 K:BB.

  • Brad Lord RP | WAS

Nationals' Brad Lord: Hangs on for fourth win

Lord (4-6) picked up the win in Wednesday's 5-4 victory over the Mets, giving up four runs on seven hits and two walks over 5.1 innings. He struck out four.

The right-hander blanked New York for four innings before the wheels began to come off, but Washington gave Lord enough offensive support to get him into the win column. The four runs were the most he'd allowed in an outing since moving back into the rotation after the All-Star break, and over six starts during that span he's posted a 3.45 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 21:8 K:BB in 31.1 innings. Lord faces a tough test in his next trip to the mound, which is scheduled to come on the road early next week in Yankee Stadium.

  • Brett Baty 3B | NYM

Mets' Brett Baty: Power surge continues

Baty went 1-for-3 with a walk and a solo home run in Wednesday's 5-4 loss to the Nationals.

Starting at third base and batting seventh, Baty took Brad Lord deep in the fifth inning to get the Mets on the board as they attempted to rally from an early 4-0 deficit. Baty has homered four times in his last eight games, hitting .370 (10-for-27) over that stretch with a steal, six runs and six RBI while seizing an everyday role in the lineup between the hot corner and the keystone.

  • Kodai Senga SP | NYM

Mets' Kodai Senga: Remains winless in second half

Senga (7-5) took the loss Wednesday, surrendering five runs (four earned) on six hits and two walks over five innings as the Mets fell 5-4 to the Nationals. He struck out four.

The right-hander served up a homer for the sixth straight start since the All-Star break, as Josh Bell took him deep in the fifth inning. Over that stretch, Senga has gone 0-2 with a shaky 5.23 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 29:19 K:BB in 31 innings, and he hasn't completed six innings in any of those outings. He'll try to find his form in his next trip to the mound, which lines up to come at home early next week in a crucial NL East clash with the Phillies.

  • Nick Lodolo SP | CIN

Reds' Nick Lodolo: Facing live batters Friday

Lodolo (finger) will face hitters in a batting practice session Friday, MLB.com reports.

Pending the outcome of Friday's session, Lodolo could rejoin the Reds rotation and start the series finale against the Dodgers next Wednesday in Los Angeles. Nick Martinez is expected to be bumped from the rotation once Lodolo is activated.

  • Diamondbacks' Adrian Del Castillo: Delivers winning run

Del Castillo entered as a pinch hitter and went 1-for-1 with an RBI in Wednesday's 3-2 extra-inning win over Cleveland.

Del Castillo came up in the bottom of the 10th inning and walked off the Guardians. He's had a few bright moments like Wednesday's during his current stint in the big leagues, but not as many as in a late-season call-up in 2024. Del Castillo was called up to the Diamondbacks following the All-Star break as a replacement for the then-injured Pavin Smith, who has since returned. Now, with catcher Gabriel Moreno (finger) poised to return ahead of this weekend's series against the Reds, Del Castillo's roster spot could be in jeopardy.

  • Diamondbacks' Gabriel Moreno: Looks ready to return

Moreno (finger) started at catcher and went 1-for-3 with a solo home run for Triple-A Reno on Wednesday.

Moreno caught for a second straight game and homered in each contest. The Diamondbacks, who are off Thursday, planned this back-to-back action to be Moreno's final test before an activation from the 60-day injured list ahead of a three-game set against the Reds beginning Friday.

  • Padres' Manny Machado: Snaps homer drought Wednesday

Machado went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in an 8-1 win against the Giants on Sunday.

Machado flashed his power with a 425-foot solo blast in the third inning. The long ball was his first since July 29 -- a span of 19 games. The veteran third baseman had only four RBI during that homerless span, and the Padres could really benefit if he's able to turn things around down the stretch. Despite the recent struggles, Machado still has a healthy 21 home runs and 74 RBI on the campaign, and his .837 OPS is on pace to be his best mark since 2022.

  • Ryan O'Hearn RF | PIT

Padres' Ryan O'Hearn: Goes deep in win

O'Hearn went 2-for-3 with a home run, a walk, two total runs and two total RBI in an 8-1 victory versus San Francisco on Wednesday.

O'Hearn kicked off the scoring with an RBI single in the first inning and added a solo shot to center field in the seventh. The former Oriole is working on a modest four-game hitting streak during which he's gone 6-for-13 at the plate with two homers, four runs and six RBI. O'Hearn has been a solid contributor since joining the Padres at the trade deadline, collecting three home runs, 10 RBI and seven runs over 16 contests while slashing .262/.372/.524.

  • Gavin Sheets 1B | SD

Padres' Gavin Sheets: Goes deep twice in rare start

Sheets went 2-for-4 with a pair of home runs and four total RBI in an 8-1 win against the Giants on Wednesday.

After San Diego acquired Ramon Laureano and Ryan O'Hearn at the trade deadline, Sheets saw his playing time drop dramatically -- he got a second straight start Wednesday, but prior to that, the veteran slugger had been out of the starting lineup for six straight games. Sheets certainly made the most of the opportunity against San Francisco, clubbing a solo blast in the second inning and a three-run homer in the third to help the Padres cruise to a big win. Laureano and O'Hearn have fared quite well since joining San Diego, so it's hard to see Sheets moving back into an everyday role when the team is healthy. However, he could have at least a short-term path to regular at-bats while Jackson Merrill is sidelined with a bone bruise in his left ankle.
