  • Rockies' Troy Johnston: Losing out on playing time

Johnston is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Pirates. Johnston appears to be fading into a part-time role, heading to the bench for the third time in four games with all those absences coming against right-handed pitchers. The downturn in playing time comes even though Johnston has had a productive June with a .308/.397/.481 slash line over 15 games.

  • Rockies' Troy Johnston: Out of lineup against righty

Johnston is absent from the lineup for Wednesday's game versus the Cubs. It's the first time since mid-April that the left-handed-hitting Johnston is not in the lineup against a right-hander (in this case, Javier Assad). Jake McCarthy and Tyler Freeman will fill the corner outfield spots for the Rockies in the series finale.

  • Rockies' Troy Johnston: Piling up multi-hit efforts

Johnston went 2-for-3 with an RBI on Saturday against the Athletics. Johnston delivered an RBI single in the fourth inning and tallied another base knock four frames later before getting pulled for a pinch runner. It was his sixth multi-hit performance in his last 12 games, and Johnston has hit .348 with seven RBI and five runs scored in that span. He has an impressive .316 batting average across 249 plate appearances for the campaign.

  • Rockies' Troy Johnston: Hitting bench against southpaw

Johnston is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cubs. He'll join fellow left-handed hitters Edouard Julien, Sterlin Thompson and Brett Sullivan on the bench while the Rockies face off against lefty Shota Imanaga in the penultimate game of the series. Johnston had started in each of Colorado's last 19 games, slashing .293/.333/.373 with three stolen bases, 10 runs and seven RBI over that stretch.

Johnston went 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI on Thursday against the Pirates. Johnston accounted for the Rockies' only offense with a two-RBI double in the fourth inning. He had a solid road trip in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, going 5-for-15 with three runs scored and three RBI across six games. Johnston is hitting .326 for the season, paired with two homers, 14 runs scored and 20 RBI across 40 games.

  • Rockies' Troy Johnston: Idle for series opener

Johnston is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Mets. • Rockies' Troy Johnston: Knocks in game-winning runs

Johnston went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI, a stolen and a run scored Saturday against the Dodgers. Johnston entered Saturday's game having collected only two hits across his last 17 at-bats while also striking out at a 30 percent clip. He turned things around against the Dodgers, delivering a two-RBI double in the sixth inning to put Colorado ahead for good. Johnston has started 13 of the team's last 15 games against right-handed pitchers, splitting his time between right field and first base.

  • Rockies' Troy Johnston: Two hits Wednesday

Johnston went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI in Wednesday's 2-1 win over the Blue Jays. The Rockies mustered only six hits as a team in a pitcher's duel this Wednesday, but Johnston got two of them from the leadoff spot and also drove in the team's first run with a single to left field in the top of the eighth inning. Johnston is enjoying a strong start to the season, going hitting .333 with a .933 OPS through his first 16 plate appearances.

  • Rockies' Troy Johnston: Playing time trending up

Johnston will start in right field and bat leadoff in Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays. The 28-year-old will stick in the starting nine for a third straight game and will move to the top of the lineup while normal table setter Jake McCarthy receives his first day off of the season. With an .818 OPS through his first four games with Colorado, Johnston appears to have at least temporarily taken control of a regular spot in the lineup against right-handed pitching at the expense of Edouard Julien, who will hit the bench for the third time in four contests.

  • Rockies' Troy Johnston: Goes to Rockies via waivers

The Rockies claimed Johnston off waivers from the Marlins on Wednesday. Johnston reached the majors for the first time in 2025 as a 28-year-old and fared well, slashing .277/.331/.420 with four home runs over 121 plate appearances. He can play first base and the corner outfield spots and should have a decent path to playing time on a talent-deficient Rockies roster.

The Marlins are expected to call up Johnston from Triple-A Jacksonville prior to Tuesday's game in St. Louis, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
