Twins' Cole Sands: Escapes with win in blown save

Sands (4-4) blew the save but came away with the win Friday against the Diamondbacks, striking one while allowing four runs on four hits in one inning.

Though Sands matched a season worst in runs allowed while taking his fourth blown save of the year, the Twins were able to mount a ninth-inning rally to bail out the hurler and get him his fourth win of the season. Justin Topa (oblique) is out for at least two weeks while on the 15-day injured list, but Sands didn't help his case Friday for future save chances. Through 65.1 frames, Sands has a 4.27 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 58:16 K:BB.

  • Niko Kavadas 1B | LAA

Angels' Niko Kavadas: Loses 40-man spot

The Angels designated Kavadas for assignment Friday.

The Angels sent Kavadas to Triple-A on Sept. 4 after he went just 2-for-20 with 10 strikeouts during his time in the majors, and the team will now strip him of his place on the 40-man roster as well. This creates space for Chad Wallach to join the active roster as catcher depth to replace Travis d'Arnaud (concussion).

  • Reid Detmers SP | LAA

Angels' Reid Detmers: Won't return in 2025

The Angels transferred Detmers (elbow) to the 60-day injured list Friday.

Left elbow inflammation forced Detmers onto the injured list Thursday, and the Angels will officially keep him out for the rest of the season now that he's on the 60-day IL. He'll conclude his first season as a full-time reliever with a 3.96 ERA and 1.30 WHIP over 63.2 innings. Connor Brogdon was selected from Triple-A to take Detmers' 40-man roster spot and replace Andrew Chafin (triceps) in the major-league bullpen.

  • Connor Brogdon RP | CLE

Angels' Connor Brogdon: Selected to MLB bullpen

The Angels selected Brogdon's contract from Triple-A Salt Lake on Friday.

With Andrew Chafin (triceps) headed for the injured list, Brogdon will rejoin the big club after being designated for assignment in mid-August. The 30-year-old righty has given up three earned runs in 7.1 innings since being sent to Salt Lake and is likely ticketed for low-leverage work with the Angels.

  • Andrew Chafin RP | CIN

Angels' Andrew Chafin: Placed on injured list

The Angels placed Chafin on the 15-day injured list Friday, retroactive to Thursday, with left triceps inflammation.

Chafin has been effective out of the bullpen since joining the Angels at the trade deadline, posting a 1.98 ERA and 1.17 WHIP alongside an 18:7 K:BB over 13.2 innings. However, he'll now be unavailable for the next two weeks after coming away from his latest appearance with a triceps issue, leaving just enough time for him to potentially come back for the final weekend of the regular season. Connor Brogdon was selected from Triple-A Salt Lake to fill the opening in the Halos' bullpen.

  • Chad Wallach C | ATH

Angels' Chad Wallach: Back in majors

The Angels selected Wallach's contract from Triple-A Salt Lake on Friday, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.

Wallach will return to the big leagues for the first time since 2023 to give the Angels depth behind the plate with Logan O'Hoppe and now Travis d'Arnaud both on the 7-day concussion IL. The 33-year-old Wallach has slashed .256/.311/.464 with 25 RBI and 18 runs scored across 137 plate appearances since signing a minor-league deal with Los Angeles in June.

  • Angels' Travis d'Arnaud: Moves to 7-day IL

The Angels placed d'Arnaud on the 7-day concussion IL on Friday, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.

D'Arnaud will join fellow backstop Logan O'Hoppe on the concussion IL after the former was hit in the head by a backswing during Thursday's contest. Sebastian Rivero will continue to start most days behind home plate while the other two catchers are out, and the Halos will promote Chad Wallach from Triple-A Salt Lake to provide depth at the position.

  • Denzel Clarke OF | ATH

Athletics' Denzel Clarke: Running session cut short

Clarke (hip) was pulled from his baserunning session Friday after experiencing a setback, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

Clarke was only able to make it down to first base twice before the A's put an end to his scheduled activities. He's slated to undergo further evaluation to determine his new timeline for return, though a setback at this stage in the year could spell an early end to the 25-year-old's season.

  • Brooks Baldwin SS | CHW

White Sox's Brooks Baldwin: Dealing with sore hip

Baldwin was taken out of Friday's game against the Guardians due to left hip soreness.

Baldwin had gone 0-for-2 with a strikeout before the hip issue caused his early removal in the sixth inning. If he ends up needing to miss any time beyond Friday, Michael Taylor would be the favorite to pick up starts in center field.

  • Trevor Rogers SP | BAL

Orioles' Trevor Rogers: Pulled with toe injury

Rogers was removed from Friday's game against the Blue Jays with left toe discomfort, Brendan Mortensen of MASNSports.com reports.

Rogers made it through five innings Friday, allowing one unearned run on three hits and four walks while striking out six batters, before his toe issue cut his start short. It's currently unknown whether the 27-year-old southpaw will be able to make his next start, but the Orioles may offer an update on his status in the near future.
