Arcia is expected to step in as Atlanta's primary second baseman after Ozzie Albies (foot) was placed on the 60-day injured list Tuesday, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports.

In a corresponding move, Atlanta selected the contract of Phil Gosselin from Triple-A Gwinnett to replace Albies on the 40-man roster and 26-man active roster, but Gosselin is expected to step into the utility role that Arcia has handled for much of the season. In order to hold off Gosselin and other potential call-ups or trade acquisitions from playing time at the keystone, however, Arcia may need to demonstrate more dependability at the plate than he showed in 2021, when he produced a career-worst .567 OPS in 89 plate appearances between stops with Milwaukee and Atlanta. He's performed far better in sporadic playing time this season, slashing .313/.393/.458 in 56 plate appearances. Arcia is likely to occupy a spot near the bottom of the batting order while he fills in for Albies.

Edman is out of the lineup for the first game of the Cardinals' doubleheader Tuesday with the Pirates, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.

Edmundo Sosa will pick up a start at shortstop while Edman rests for the early game before presumably checking back into the lineup for the nightcap. Through his first 13 games of June, Edman is slashing .294/.368/.431 with two home runs and three stolen bases.

Perdomo is expected to remain the starting shortstop for the immediate future after the Diamondbacks announced Nick Ahmed will undergo surgery on his shoulder, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.

There's hope Ahmed could play again in 2022, so at the very least, the "immediate future" for Perdomo is most of the rest of the season. He's been the regular shortstop since Ahmed last played in a game May 15.

Castillo went 1-for-4 with a solo home run Monday against the Cardinals.

Castillo opened the scoring in the second inning with his third home run of the season. That ended a 27-game homerless drought, and he's struggled mightily in general during that stretch by hitting just .158 with four RBI and six runs scored. He could be a candidate to lose playing time when either Kevin Newman (groin) returns or Oneil Cruz is recalled, but Castillo remains the Pirates' primary shortstop for the time being.

Swanson went 2-for-5 with a home run and four RBI in Monday's 9-5 win over the Nationals.

Swanson had a two-run single in the second and then added the fourth of Atlanta's five homers with a two-run blast in the sixth. The shortstop has hits in 24 of his last 26 games, going 39-for-105 (.371) in what's been an impressive and extended hot streak. He's up to a .292/.356/.460 slash line, eight homers, 36 RBI, 37 runs scored, nine stolen bases, 12 doubles and a triple through 62 contests overall.

Berti went 2-for-4 with a double, a stolen base and two runs scored in Monday's 3-2 loss to the Phillies.

Berti got aboard with a double in the fifth inning and a single in the seventh before scoring on each of Miguel Rojas' RBI doubles in the contest. The latter time aboard, Berti was able to swipe a base for his eighth steal in 12 games in June. He's added four multi-hit games this month, and he's now slashing .278/.386/.412 with two home runs, 10 RBI, 12 steals and 20 runs scored through 32 contests.

Smith was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas on Monday, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Smith is 0-for-16 at the dish over seven games in June and has just one hit over his last 40 at-bats, so he'll head to the minors to push the reset button. The Athletics have yet to announce a corresponding move.

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Monday that Ahmed will undergo surgery on his right shoulder, Theo Mackie of the Arizona Republic reports.

Ahmed missed the start of the season with a shoulder issue and was only able to return for 17 games before heading back to the injured list. His issue evidently won't go away without surgery, and the Diamondbacks are merely hopeful that he'll be able to return this season. Expect Geraldo Perdomo to handle shortstop for most of the rest of the year and potentially the entire campaign.

Marlins manager Don Mattingly revealed Monday that Wendle (hamstring) has resumed baseball activities and has started a running progression, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

Wendle's ability to resume on-field work suggests that the platelet-rich plasma injection he received for his strained right hamstring earlier this season has yielded the desired effect. Since Wendle is now in the midst of his second stint on the I0-day injured list this season due to a right hamstring injury, the Marlins will likely proceed cautiously with him before activating him. He doesn't look like a good bet to be activated this week.

Smith (shoulder) plans to take batting practice Monday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Smith has been on the 10-day injured list with a left shoulder sprain since June 4 and is eligible to rejoin the active roster as early as Tuesday. While the 24-year-old appears to be trending in the right direction, he doesn't yet have a firm timetable to return to game action, and it's unclear whether he'll require a rehab assignment.
