Tigers' Zach McKinstry: Sitting against righty Wednesday

McKinstry is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Phillies, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.

After he was on the bench for Tuesday's 4-1 win while southpaw Ranger Suarez took the hill for the Phillies, the lefty-hitting McKinstry will remain out of the lineup against Philadelphia right-hander Spencer Turnbull in the series finale. The Tigers may not be adhering to a strict platoon at shortstop between McKinstry and the righty-hitting Ryan Kreidler, as McKinstry has now sat in three of Detroit's last five matchups with righties.

  • Taylor Walls 3B | TB

Rays' Taylor Walls: Day off Wednesday

Walls is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game versus the Mariners, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Walls had a rare big night offensively in Tuesday's 11-3 win over Seattle, going 3-for-4 with a triple, two RBI and a run scored. He'll begin Wednesday's game on the bench, enabling Jose Caballero to pick up a start at shortstop.

  • Taylor Walls 3B | TB

Rays' Taylor Walls: Most productive game of season

Walls went 3-for-4 with a triple, two RBI and a run scored Tuesday against the Mariners.

Walls recorded just his second multi-hit game in 12 starts this season, and the performance brought his average to .175 on the campaign. Despite his struggles at the plate, Walls has made five consecutive starts at shortstop, all of which have come against right-handed pitchers.

  • Orioles' Gunnar Henderson: Homers, scores three times in loss

Henderson went 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBI and three runs scored in a 10-8 loss to the Guardians on Tuesday.

Henderson hit a two-run home run in the first inning then walked and scored in the third. He later singled and scored in the seventh frame and added another walk in the eighth. Henderson registered his seventh-multi hit game in June and is now slashing .333/.436/.667 with seven home runs and 14 RBI this month. On the season, the 22-year-old shortstop is slashing .282/.383/.607 with 25 homers, 55 RBI, 69 runs scored and 13 steals over 305 at-bats.

  • Ryan Kreidler 3B | MIN

Tigers' Ryan Kreidler: Swipes two bases Tuesday

Kreidler went 2-for-2 with a walk, a run and two stolen bases in Tuesday's 4-1 win over the Phillies.

Kreidler stole the first two bases of his MLB career in the seventh inning. The 26-year-old has mostly been a bench player in the majors, so while Tuesday's effort was promising, it looks to be an outlier. Zach McKinstry should get most of the playing time at shortstop in the near future with Javier Baez (back) still on the injured list, pushing Kreidler to a reserve role most days.

  • Javier Baez SS | DET

Tigers' Javier Baez: Not close to IL return

Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said that Baez (back) won't be activated from the 10-day injured list before the end of the team's road trip July 7, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.

Baez became eligible to return from the IL on June 19, but Hinch noted that the shortstop will miss the upcoming 10-game road trip and requires an "extensive" rehab assignment prior to being activated. Given Hinch's comments, Baez seems likely to remain out through the All-Star break. Zach McKinstry and Ryan Kreidler have been splitting time at shortstop since Baez was placed on the IL.

  • David Hamilton SS | MIL

Red Sox's David Hamilton: Absent from lineup

Hamilton is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game versus the Blue Jays.

Hamilton hit a big home run in the Red Sox' comeback win over the Blue Jays on Monday, but he will begin Tuesday's festivities on the bench. Ceddanne Rafaela is at shortstop and Enmanuel Valdez will play second base.

  • Bo Bichette 3B | NYM

Blue Jays' Bo Bichette: Back from IL, as expected

The Blue Jays activated Bichette (calf) from the 10-day injured list Tuesday, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports.

Bichette will skip a rehab assignment and rejoin the floundering Blue Jays following a minimum 10-day stay on the IL. He'll bat leadoff Tuesday against the Red Sox. Isiah Kiner-Falefa had been handling shortstop while Bichette was on the shelf but now will slide back to third base.

  • Zach McKinstry 3B | DET

Tigers' Zach McKinstry: Idle against lefty

McKinstry is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Phillies.

McKinstry will avoid a matchup with Ranger Suarez on Tuesday, yielding to Ryan Kreidler at shortstop. McKinstry had started in each of the Tigers' last two games, going 4-for-7 with a solo homer and two doubles.

  • Orioles' Jackson Holliday: Coming off IL

Triple-A Norfolk reinstated Holliday (elbow) from its 7-day injured list Tuesday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.

As part of his recovery, Holliday will serve exclusively as a designated hitter for multiple weeks and refrain from throwing. The 20-year-old hasn't seen any big-league action since April and is slashing .259/.424/.455 with seven home runs and five steals over 245 plate appearances with Norfolk.
